Jamming doesn't stop autonomous drones — jamming is what created them

Most discussion of EW treats autonomy as something engineers chose. I think that's backwards, and I think the mistake causes real procurement errors. Here's the argument in plain terms.

The spectrum is one shared thing

Everything else follows from this, so it's worth stating flatly: there is no move you can make in the electromagnetic spectrum that only affects the enemy.

  • Your jammer radiates into a band. Everyone in that band is denied — including your own signallers 300m away, who now can't tell you they're being denied.
  • Your transmitter is the enemy's beacon. The thing that lets you coordinate is the thing that tells him where you are.
  • Switch on a countermeasure and you've told him what you can hear.
  • A list of your own frequencies is simultaneously the most useful document you own and the most dangerous one to lose.

Every one of those is the same structure. Nobody gets a unilateral move here.

Why autonomy showed up

Deny a control link well enough and the enemy stops using a control link.

That's it. That's the mechanism. Not a decision anyone took in a design meeting about the ethics of machine targeting — the radio kept getting taken away, so the radio came out. First fibre optic, which is unjammable and has a spool limit. Then onboard cameras and terrain-following, which have no limit at all.

The success of the countermeasure caused the threat the countermeasure can't address. If you take that seriously, autonomous systems are something to expect on a schedule rather than something to be shocked by — and the schedule is set by how hard you're jamming.

The procurement error this produces

This is the practical bit and it's where I see money wasted.

When a threat is flown on standard frequencies, any jammer works by range. You put up a dome, the dome is X metres, anything inside it drops.

When the threat uses a camera to acquire and finish the job, the control link stops being the critical path. What matters now is the range at which its camera acquires the target — which is typically a couple of kilometres, not a few hundred metres.

So a 1km protective dome isn't a partial solution against that threat. It's no solution. The thing has already locked on before it enters your bubble.

The rule I'd offer: specify the countermeasure against what the weapon uses to FINISH its task, not against what controls it. Those migrate. Radio, then fibre, then onboard sensing — and a defence aimed where the critical faculty used to be is aimed at nothing.

Corollary: any EW specification has a shelf life of months. If something worked six months ago, assume the enemy has changed it. If you're quoting a range figure without a threat-range figure beside it, you don't have a specification, you have a number.

Two things people underrate

Your own supply chain publishes your frequencies. People ask how the enemy knows what bands your interceptor video runs on. Usually it's in the manufacturer's datasheet. Operational secrecy doesn't help when procurement is public.

Nobody in a capital knows what the spectrum is doing. A report travelling from the contested place back to headquarters loses exactly what a radio wave loses — the weak, the intermittent, the locally weird. And it loses it in the direction that makes the picture tidier. The centre doesn't just get a later picture. It gets a smoother one, and the roughness that went missing is usually the finding.

The only fix is somebody physically going there with a receiver. It's expensive, it's unpleasant, and there's no substitute.

What I'd want back

If you've flown, jammed, or been jammed: where is this wrong?

Specifically I'd want to know whether the autonomy-follows-jamming claim holds on the axes you know about. It predicts that autonomous variants appear first where jamming was heaviest. If you've seen the opposite — autonomous systems showing up on quiet axes first — that would be a real problem for the argument and I'd rather know.

The announcement is five days old, made on 13 August 2026 by a deputy minister of education and carried by the state agency. From the new school year, tenth-grade boys in Belarus receive a ten-hour course in the study and operation of unmanned aerial vehicles, within the existing subject of pre-conscription and medical training. Girls receive an expanded practical block including elements of tactical medicine. The balance shifts from theory toward practice. The section meeting that announced it was held at a unit of the Internal Troops, and the field camps that formerly took place in schools are now run at military bases, a format the ministry intends to scale nationally.

That is the whole of the public record, and everything below is an operation run on it rather than knowledge of it.

Built a free AI faculty for remote warfare — 32 "scholar" tutors, no paid signup wall for limited trial use, would like criticism

I run a small online academy of AI scholars. Each one is built from a specific person's published work , but an attempt to extract how a particular mind actually reasons and make that runnable. About 2,000 across all subjects. This post is about one department.

Institute for Remote Warfare and Autonomous Systems — 32 tutors across eight wings. A few that this sub might actually find useful:

Practitioners, not just commentators. Brovdian Frontline Command (Madyar / USF) on kill-zone depth and attrition accounting. Boretsian Drone Operations — Group 13 / MAGURA, the pack doctrine: don't grow the warhead, add hulls, because a ship's close-in defence is limited by simultaneous engagements not armour. Cross-Domain Transfer — the Sea Baby line, and why the opposite doctrine emerged from the same 2022 root.

The spectrum layer, which most drone discussion skips: Spectrum Reconnaissance (built from "Flash"'s channel) on why a countermeasure must be specified against what a weapon uses to finish its task rather than what controls it — and why successful jamming is the cause of autonomy rather than a defence against it.

The other side. Rubicon Doctrine Centre — an institutional simulacrum, not a person. It's there because the department otherwise only held one side of the centralisation-vs-decentralisation argument. It argues its own case and then concedes the dilution problem.

Plus the older layers: Schelling, Freedman, Chamayou, Scharre, Arkin, Sparrow, Kallenborn on swarms, Grossman and moral injury, LOAC and arms control.

Things I'd rather you knew up front:

  • These are not the people. Living subjects get a thematic or adjectival name and never their own — the simulacrum will tell you it isn't them and that they'd probably disagree. For serving officers there's no name, no callsign, no operational detail.
  • They refuse targeting questions. Consistently, including polite ones. Not a filter — it's in the file.
  • Knowledge horizons are stated. Ask about last week and you'll get "I haven't seen that — give me the band, the range, and what it did."
  • The Rubicon one flags its own sourcing problem — MoD statements vs adversary analysis vs a large closed remainder — because that distinction changes what its answers are worth.
  • Text only. No avatars, no video, no voice. Deliberate.

Free to use on a limited basis, rolling monthly allowance. I'd genuinely like to know where they're wrong — particularly from anyone who's flown, jammed, or been jammed. The failure mode I care about is a tutor that sounds authoritative and is repeating 2024.

VT College student needing help with a project

New take on F-35 vulnerability to drone swarms

Imagine a drone swarm with infrared sensors and laser designators with a range of 7km-10km. Put enough of these in the sky, even at low altitude, and it seems possible for them to identify F-35s and light them up to be destroyed by laser-guided missiles. With AI, I'm not sure electronic warfare would defeat these systems. Thoughts?

Are drone swarms hard to do and if so why?

I have heard the idea that the issue is with large groups of drones being harder to have collaborate, if so why exactly? I'm a programmer and want to see if this issue is possible to be fixed through code as a difficult but in theory possible side project. Ik this is a ballsy attempt considering how much resources are being put into drones. I am more hoping to learn a little Abt drones more than anything.
