Most discussion of EW treats autonomy as something engineers chose. I think that's backwards, and I think the mistake causes real procurement errors. Here's the argument in plain terms.
The spectrum is one shared thing
Everything else follows from this, so it's worth stating flatly: there is no move you can make in the electromagnetic spectrum that only affects the enemy.
- Your jammer radiates into a band. Everyone in that band is denied — including your own signallers 300m away, who now can't tell you they're being denied.
- Your transmitter is the enemy's beacon. The thing that lets you coordinate is the thing that tells him where you are.
- Switch on a countermeasure and you've told him what you can hear.
- A list of your own frequencies is simultaneously the most useful document you own and the most dangerous one to lose.
Every one of those is the same structure. Nobody gets a unilateral move here.
Why autonomy showed up
Deny a control link well enough and the enemy stops using a control link.
That's it. That's the mechanism. Not a decision anyone took in a design meeting about the ethics of machine targeting — the radio kept getting taken away, so the radio came out. First fibre optic, which is unjammable and has a spool limit. Then onboard cameras and terrain-following, which have no limit at all.
The success of the countermeasure caused the threat the countermeasure can't address. If you take that seriously, autonomous systems are something to expect on a schedule rather than something to be shocked by — and the schedule is set by how hard you're jamming.
The procurement error this produces
This is the practical bit and it's where I see money wasted.
When a threat is flown on standard frequencies, any jammer works by range. You put up a dome, the dome is X metres, anything inside it drops.
When the threat uses a camera to acquire and finish the job, the control link stops being the critical path. What matters now is the range at which its camera acquires the target — which is typically a couple of kilometres, not a few hundred metres.
So a 1km protective dome isn't a partial solution against that threat. It's no solution. The thing has already locked on before it enters your bubble.
The rule I'd offer: specify the countermeasure against what the weapon uses to FINISH its task, not against what controls it. Those migrate. Radio, then fibre, then onboard sensing — and a defence aimed where the critical faculty used to be is aimed at nothing.
Corollary: any EW specification has a shelf life of months. If something worked six months ago, assume the enemy has changed it. If you're quoting a range figure without a threat-range figure beside it, you don't have a specification, you have a number.
Two things people underrate
Your own supply chain publishes your frequencies. People ask how the enemy knows what bands your interceptor video runs on. Usually it's in the manufacturer's datasheet. Operational secrecy doesn't help when procurement is public.
Nobody in a capital knows what the spectrum is doing. A report travelling from the contested place back to headquarters loses exactly what a radio wave loses — the weak, the intermittent, the locally weird. And it loses it in the direction that makes the picture tidier. The centre doesn't just get a later picture. It gets a smoother one, and the roughness that went missing is usually the finding.
The only fix is somebody physically going there with a receiver. It's expensive, it's unpleasant, and there's no substitute.
What I'd want back
If you've flown, jammed, or been jammed: where is this wrong?
Specifically I'd want to know whether the autonomy-follows-jamming claim holds on the axes you know about. It predicts that autonomous variants appear first where jamming was heaviest. If you've seen the opposite — autonomous systems showing up on quiet axes first — that would be a real problem for the argument and I'd rather know.
