**SAFETY**
This subreddit strongly advises AGAINST doing prolonged (3+ days) dry fasts if your only source of information or experience comes from what is discussed on this subreddit. If you are an experienced faster and are receiving outside help/medical check-ups, then your knowledge obviously extends beyond what is discussed here. You are otherwise putting yourself at risk of potentially worsening your health as the scientific literature is extremely limited on this subject. Please remember to fast responsibly.
If you begin to feel uncomfortable or unwell, you should stop fasting immediately. Other worrying signs may include high protein in the urine, high fever, and fainting.
**HUMAN STUDIES**
* The dehydration treatment of epilepsy
**ANIMAL STUDIES**
* Increased fat catabolism sustains water balance during fasting in zebra finches
* Intermittent drinking, oxytocin and human health
* The ‘selfish brain’ is regulated by aquaporins and autophagy under nutrient deprivation
* When less means more: Dehydration improves innate immunity in rattlesnakes
**BIOLOGICAL STUDIES/THEORETICAL PAPERS**
* Unmasking the secrets of cancer
* Cell hydration and mTOR-dependent signaling
* Effects of acute and chronic hypohydration on kidney health and function
Please note that we probably will not add studies that have loose/indirect associations between "dehydration" and physiological mechanisms of action. From the most reliable human study we have, they state that "on day 4 and 5, all participants had a controllable feeling of thirst, but none showed any signs of dehydration." I think it's best we avoid words that have negative implications (i.e. "dehydration) when discussing dry fasting, and unless the study is extremely valuable or shows very large effect results, it's probably best to avoid adding these studies that will clutter the list and make the whole thing look more extreme than it already is. You can still post the studies for discussion, they may just not be added to the list.
Feel free to post additional links in the comments as you find them and I will add them to the list.
On a side note, if you are interested in becoming a moderator to help out with the subreddit then please message me

Hello,
I started my firt dry fast on sunday night. I am at 38 hours now.
Thing is:
- I started at the gym, so I sweated a lot.
- Also I have been eating carnivore for 2 months now, so no excess water stored in the body
- but I am overweight, I have fat to use for sure.
I am planning on going rock climbing at the gym tonight and I am not sure what I should do.
I don't think it would be safe to stay dry fasting when climbing, but
- Should I push to 45h, and start sipping water and then go climbing?
- Or should I start now sipping water, so my body has time to rehydrate?
- Or should I just throw in the towel and eat (carnivore) and wait until a time I am better prepared to do a 3 days fast?
I should note that I feel fine beside peeing less volume and a little 2h insomnia last night.
Thank you in advance, first time posting here, I discovered this subreddit yesterday 😅

Just found this case study, describing a near fatal event due to dry fasting. I am curious what your thougts on this are?
Note: I am very fond of long dry fasts and had great success with them.

Recently, I completed 2 consecutive dry fasts. I am now in my 3rd fast. The first fast was 6 days dry. I ate for 1 day. Then did a 4 day dry fast. I ate for 9 days. Now, on day 4 of my 3rd fast. I managed to lose pounds and ice kept my diet pretty healthy/hydrating. For the first time in a long time I’ve been able to work full hour shifts at work while moving around and moving things for nearly 12 hours without feeling fatigued, tired or drained, sugar crashing (because I’ve had no sugar) or extreme dryness of the mouth (because I’m more hydrated when not fasting and lower body weight). I’ll finish this at 4 or 5 days. Started at 205lbs first fast. Today, weight at 187lbs on 3rd fast on Day 4.
1st Dry Fast Day 1 - 205lbs
1st Dry Fast Day 4 - 198lbs
2nd Dry Fast Day 4 - 188lbs
3rd Dry Fast Day 4 - 187lbs
Edit: 3rd Dry Fast End of Day 4 - 185lbs
Edit: I’ve checked my calendar I had actually did 3 days dry fast after the 2nd and before the 3rd dry fast here. Eat 1 day then did 4 days dry (3rd). But, I didn’t count it since it was less than 4 days.

Hi, last year I was doing dryfasts up to 4-5 days. Now due to trauma and health anxiety, i regained some weight and fear fasting, though I kinda know I shouldn't. Currently I am at day 14 of carnivore. Back then I did not do carnivore. And right now I would like to lose about 10-13kg within 2 months, if possible. My carnivore alone does 1kg off a week, so I kinda wanted to support that with occasional dryfasts.
So I wondered, since I am already in deep ketosis for 12 days. Do I have to go extended to get efficient fatloss? Or are shorter intervalls like 18-36h enough aswell? And if someone here made some experiences with Carnivore and Dryfast or shorter dryfasts, I'd love to hear something about that. Would be appreciated <3

Hello, I usually do 18-24hr dry fasts but I want to up it to 48hrs. I like to walk and I was wondering if it’s safe to walk 3 miles while on a dry fast. I’m fine with just 2 if that’s safe. I love walking every morning before it gets too hot (around 60 degrees Fahrenheit). Btw this walk has lots of incline because where I live have lots of hills which sucks but it is what it is.

I am beginning to get worried about my health - I was very healthy but have been binging on junk and processed sugar for almost 4 years.
I want to begin a dry fasting routine but I don't know how to begin - what to eat before etc - I am thinking of starting with 1 day per week then 2 days per week until I can reach 4 days per week - or should I do it monthly? should I do 3 days per month then 4 days per month then 1 week per month. or should I do one big 10 day dry fast, because I can feel pain and lump on my jaw every time I eat sugar - and its starting to scare me. when I stop sugar it goes away but when I eat it again it comes back. I went to my GP they said I'm fine but I feel they dismissed me and arent taking it seriously

Okay so this wasnt even really intentional i got wisdom teeth surgery and didnt eat the day of or the two days after due to being in pain and being scared. And today when I tried to eat, i began throwing up all day, nausea, shortness of breath, cramps you name it, it was bad. (Also i didnt eat a full meal, i had like a spoon of yogurt and 1/3 of a jello cup with a few sips of apple juice and i was sent into hell. Anyways after dry heaving for hours i wokeup from my 5th nap and luckily it wasnt to throwup again. So now I had a little but of watered down soup to try and reintroduce food since my stomache settled but i really dont know what to do to make this not happen again. and im also worried about how i should increase this intake without sending myself into a crisis again. I was genuinely fighting for my life and dry heaving while trying to prevent dry socket and it was not it. Ive been sipping water and gatorade for a while now but still feel lingering nausea. Any advice i really fucked up 💀

So I had a fairly uneventful first 5 day dry fast. I ended it as recommended by Dr. Dunning with a cup of water and baking soda, but I added a bit of himalayan salt. Drank that slowly, over about 40 minutes. Then I waited maybe another 40 minutes before starting in on a quart of coconut water. I also added magnesium glycinate to it. That I drank fairly quickly, over the course of maybe an hour.
Shortly after that I got the warning rumbles in my stomach that things weren't going well. I got some urge to use the toilet, so I went. I had a very quick emptying of a bunch of liquid. When I got up and looked it was deep dark brown with an unexpected amount of bits and pieces. I was expecting nothing, and actually clear liquid, so I was very shocked.
It seems that I gave myself the enema that is recommended for some people. In some sense, I'm happy that the accidental clearance happened as it seems to have cleaned me out of waste products quite thoroughly.
So, my question is, what did I do wrong?

I been alternate day water fasting and dry fasting and when I water fast I drink lots of water and the next day dry fast and repeat. I want to know has anyone had success with this? I am 20 pounds down but I still have alot more to go and I am also working while doing it. More than anything I am tired but other than that I feel fine. I want to know has anyone had success with this? What are your experiences and weightloss?

Its really interesting how the body works. Its been almost 72 hours into my dry fast and I still want to pee. So far so good, but I'm having slight headaches, body cramps and my lips are DRY. My chest also hurts a bit. But I'm quite alert and a bit jittery.
Anyone have similar experiences?

I've done two 5 day dry fasts, and on the second, i definitely was getting some gallbladder pain intermittently throughout. Now I've had an ultrasound and hida scan done on my gallbladder, and I don't have gallstones, but it doesn't empty completely probably due to sludgy bile.
I would really like to do a 9 day dry fast, but am worried about my gallbladder. Have any of you who've done 7-9 day dry fasts had gallbladder pain in the middle of your fast?
I noticed mine was somewhat alleviated by doing liver massages, but I'm wondering if this makes it a complete no go or if it can be pushed through. I've had blood work done after that showed no heightened bilirubin levels or heightened liver enzyme levels, aka, the gallbladder was still emptying afterward.

I've only done 24-hour dry fasts till now, so I did not have to give up on my hypothyroid medications. But now that I'm planning to do longer fasts, like three or seven days, should I be taking the medication, or should I just not ingest anything?
There is a lot of contradiction on this. Some people say you can take medicine with a bit of water and dry fast for the rest of the day, but I think since the blood thickens, taking medicine might lead to complications.
please guide me

Der all,
I have a question on the use of creatine and dry fasting.
I usually take creatine every day.
As far as I know, creatine Stores water in the muscles.
Now i started my 5day df.
Would my body now destroy all my muscles, so He can access the water inside?
I mean on a higher rate than normal, since there is so much water stored because of the use of creatine?
Or can He Access the water without killing all my gains?

The last time I dry-fasted two days a week I got cramps in my calves at night. They slowly subsided after I stopped dry-fasting.
Now I've started fasting again and last night I felt the cramps coming back.
What do you think is causing them? I already take magnesium before bed and take walks every day. I think i eat enough salt, but do I need more?
Do you have any ideas? It's not fun to wake up with cramps.

Does swallowing saliva count as dry fasting? I'm almost 48 hours without water, but I've been swallowing my saliva as and when
I am actually doing a water fast but wanted to see how long I can go without water.

Has anyone tried intermittent dry fasting 23:1 but the refeed is only water for the hour?

Hi guys, does anyone know if losing weight through dry fasting gives you less loose skin or is it pretty much the same as any other weight loss?

I used to do 24H fasting during the weekends for one or two days. Then, I started to see the benefit of the fasting on my daily life. I was having constant brain fog and couldn't comprehend what's the people saying easily during conversations. Last week, during the meetings with multiple folks, It was the one of the few moments, I was engaged in the conversation and was able to adapt and comprehend what was the technical discussion about easily without doing extra effort like I used to.
Finally, Yesterday I decided to fast starting from 9 am and fast for 36 hours.
I just broke my fasting 2 hours ago. I didn't realize that I could continue the 36 hours. The first night sleep was very hard, I was fatigue and feeling starvation. then after 24 hour of fasting, the starvation feeling has reduced.
I tried mainly the prolonged fasting to heal the leaky gut and cure the brain fog. Do you think I'm on the right track or should do something different
Note: I was having a chronic fatty liver and suspecting it was because of leaky guy. also high LDL. The recent blood work was good but 3 years ago, it was worse.

I’ve been on multiple 3 day dry fasts over the last few years now but this last year I have been way out of check with my diet, stopped my fasting and have gotten up to 100kg at 6’1 so I’m probably at least 15kg overweight.
Now I’m planning to get on dry fasting again and will be trying to do a dry fast weekend every week.
I will also be doing a 30-40min walk everyday including the dry fasting days. Has anyone done zone 2 cardio while dry fasting? I feel that will definitely burn a lot of fat or is this too much?

Title. If I have 2 large carnivore meals (10am and 2pm) should I aim to have more water before eating? Say 8am. Or after eating say 5pm.
So far from my experience if I have more before it seems to worsen my digestion. Even with 2 hour window.
If I do after I seem a bit constipated but digestion is better? Still testing though...
What are your experiences?
