School’s starting - what extra supplies could I contribute to our teacher?

I know teachers spend a lot of their own money/time getting supplies for their classes.

I’d like to put together a basket of items kids would use up through the year.

Any teachers/parents who can recommend items for JK/SrK class? Or even things a teacher would find useful for themself?

(I know gift cards are good too but that’s a gift that comes with an errand.)

Would you drive Oshawa to Quebec City in one day or break up the journey?

Pretty much what the title says.

We live in Oshawa and are going to Quebec City Nov 7-10. I wanted to drive on the 7th, spend 8th and 9th there, and drive back on the 10th but my wife thinks it will be too much of a drive, especially with our 4 year-old child.

So she wants to break the journey and stay the night in Montreal on the way there, and another place on the way back, extending the trip to the 11th.

It doesn't look too daunting tbh, 7.5 hours + maybe another hour or 2 with stops but still only 9-10 hours of travel time. I would much rather do it in one go.

Space to launch small low powered model rockets?

Would anyone know of an area where my son and I could launch some small model rockets? Community resources in my area have been somewhat useless. I’m further out east so locations out past the 115 are fine. Thanks!

Fence post repair recommendations

Anyone know any good fence post repair companies? I think I need to replace 4-6 wood fence posts in my backyard as the fence is starting to lean. They are totally rotted out at the bottom so a simple repair doesn’t look like it will be enough. Also how much should I be looking to have to pay for this kind on thing?

Goemans Whitby -not good

Extremely disappointed with Goemans and their absolutely unacceptable customer service.

I have never dealt with a company that has made something as simple as purchasing and receiving a washing machine this frustrating.

To start, the delivery time was completely unreliable. The delivery kept getting pushed later and later into the day, hours beyond the time window I was given. That alone was incredibly frustrating, but unfortunately, that was only the beginning.

We purchased a brand-new washing machine, only to discover that it made an absolutely HORRIBLE noise during the spin cycle. And when I say horrible, I mean you could hear this machine two floors away. It was so loud and obnoxious that there was clearly something wrong with it.

I contacted Goemans and was initially told I would have to wait an entire week just to have someone come and look at a brand-new appliance. After multiple phone calls and considerable persistence on my part and my husband, they finally managed to arrange someone to come on the weekend.

Three technicians came out. I specifically explained the noise and told them that the problem occurred during the spin cycle. Did they wait for the spin cycle to happen? No. They looked at the machine, let it run to a small spin cycle apparently decided everything was fine, and left.

I wish I could say I was surprised.

As their vehicle was literally pulling away from my house, the washing machine went straight back into the same obnoxious, ridiculously loud spin cycle.

At this point, I called their service number again, expecting someone to actually help resolve the problem. Instead, I was told that they couldn’t get in touch with the repair or delivery drivers and that I would have to make ANOTHER appointment for the following week. They also would not pass me along to a supervisor or give a name of a supervisor. Who’s running this ridiculousness???

This isn’t customer service. This is making the customer do all of the work while Goemans passes the problem from one department to another.

The amount of time, effort and frustration I have had to put into resolving a problem with an appliance that should have worked properly when I bought it is completely unacceptable.

Goemans needs to seriously reconsider what they consider to be customer service. Because from my experience, it has been some of the worst service I have encountered. I should not have to repeatedly call, chase appointments, explain the same problem over and over, and essentially prove that my brand-new washing machine is defective.

If you’re considering purchasing from Goemans, think twice about what happens AFTER they take your money. The sale may be easy, but apparently getting help when something goes wrong is an entirely different story. I hate that I have to even give one star. Very disappointed! And really for a savings of $30!

Restaurants that are ending their lease or want to hand out lease to someone else

Hi everyone,

I’m currently looking for a small commercial restaurant space in Durham Region (Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering) to launch a BBQ / smoked-meat concept.

Ideally looking for a second-generation restaurant space that already has things like a commercial hood, walk-in fridge/freezer, grease trap, etc. I’m open to taking over an existing restaurant lease or purchasing the existing business/equipment if the numbers make sense.

I’m not looking for a huge restaurant — roughly 800–1,500 sq. ft. would be ideal, with a focus on takeout/delivery and some limited seating.

If you’re a restaurant owner who is ending your lease, looking to assign your lease, closing your restaurant, or know of a space that might be available, please DM me.

Serious buyer/operator. Happy to discuss privately and keep everything confidential.

Thanks!

PS : Even if you’re not ready to advertise publicly, feel free to reach out — I’m specifically trying to find opportunities that may not be listed yet.

Looking for an apartment or private room options

I’m a first year student going into Durham Collage, I was supposed to be guaranteed a spot in residence, but the email never got to me and I missed to due date. I am now trying to look for other options. I have looked on DC website for housing options, Facebook marketplace, kijiji, and just generally searching it up. The problem is, I’ve message 18 people about their advertisement and only 3 have got back to me. The first one didn’t advertise whether they wanted a specific gender so I had asked and they said no because I was a girl. Second one didn’t make any sense, their communication wasn’t clear, and hasn’t answered. The third left me on read after asking a second question. Before I had messaged all these people, I did have a housing situation planned with someone, but they canceled on me and told me they wouldn’t be renting out the room to anyone anymore.

TL/DR: I need housing options with people who will answer my questions and get back to me. Maximum of $800/month and any lease will do

Where do you enjoy volunteering in the Durham Region?

I’m hoping to get some ideas for volunteering in Durham Region and would love to hear from people who actually volunteer locally.
I’m in Brooklin, but I’d be happy to volunteer anywhere in the Durham Region. I’m a woman in my mid-50s and recently retired, and I’m finding the number of volunteer opportunities on the websites a little overwhelming! 😅
I’m wondering if I should start by thinking about what I enjoy and then look for opportunities that fit.
Some things I enjoy or would be interested in:
🎨 Art

🏡 Interior decorating/design

🍳 Cooking/food

📋 Organizing

🐾 Animals

❤️ Helping seniors

🎉 Planning or helping with events

🚗 Driving/transportation

🌿 Nature and the outdoors

🌊 Lake, shoreline or community cleanups

♻️ Environmental or conservation projects

🌱 Gardening or anything involving green spaces

And I’m open to trying something completely different too!

So, where do you enjoy volunteering? What organizations or types of volunteering have you had a really positive experience with in Durham Region?
I’d especially love to hear about places where you feel your time is genuinely appreciated and where you’ve enjoyed the people and the experience.
Thanks! I’m looking forward to hearing your suggestions and hopefully finding a good fit. 😊

Vulnerable Sector Check processing time

I just submitted a Vulnerable Sector Check through Durham Regional Police I need for a co-op position. The DRPS website currently says police record checks are taking around 8 weeks, but I’ve also seen their other pages mention much shorter processing times.

For anyone who has applied recently, especially in the last month or two, how long did your VSC actually take from submission to receiving the result? I submitted online of course.

I’m worried because my university co-op has a latest start date for receiving a full work-term credit which is October 5th (5 weeks away), so an 8-week wait will cause problems.

Would appreciate any recent timelines. Thanks!

Who is the better choice, Fido or Freedom?

I need a new phone & phone plan. I’ve been hosed by Fido in the past. The gentleman working in one of those cell phone booths in the mall was all in on Fido.

He said the reason Fido could increase my prices without advising me, which is my beef with them, was because
I wasn’t locked into a contract anymore.🙄

He told me Fido has much better coverage.

Also whoever I go with, I need the to be an iPhone. I’m not sure if some carriers are specific to Samsung or Google phones.

We stick to the GTA & occasionally east to the Peterborough area.

I’d appreciate hearing your experiences before signing up for another 2 year contract. Thanks!

NB: Important info we’re going to Spain in September, need a carrier who has overage. Sport, import info I should have included, but I can check the sites if there are one or two

Hello,

Does anyone have a recommendation for repainting kitchen cabinets? Some of the paint gas chipped off...wear/tear.

I'm open to individuals who professionally do paint jobs.

People who went to or their kids went to gifted school

My son got accepted in the gifted school but I’m still unsure if it’s the right fit for him as he struggles with time management. Do kids get any accommodation if they have time management issues?
Any information is welcome.

Recommendations for natural, lightweight wig/topper stores?

Anyone know of a place that is high quality and uses human hair? I always see such beautiful wigs and toppers online but all of their stores are in the USA. I have androgenic alopecia and would love some recommendations. TIA!
