Books

Hi all. I’m a junior coming in from Northeast State (community college). I got my book list and I’m curious if the books are already paid for in our classes or if it’s an extra cost? At Northeast, the books and software were already included and we were given access to those books on the first day of classes.

Thanks!

It depends on the class and professor, but most of the time the books are going to be a separate fee. It’s almost never included, the only time it would be free would be if the professor gives a free link to the book

Thanks for your input! What about the software, for example like MyStatLab? Is that included in the cost of the class?

I personally haven’t used that program, but the same generally applies for anything additional you need for the class, where you have to purchase it separately; this has been the case with Minitab and Cengage for me

Aw darn. The classes are already double the cost going from Northeast to ETSU. We would get a book list at Northeast too but the professor would give us a code on the first day of classes and tell us it was included. Guess I’m not in Kansas anymore! Thanks for the heads up!

For the online stuff like Mystatlab you are kind stuck, but for any physical books you need check chegg and eBay before going to the bookstore. They’re often half as expensive on these sites than on campus.

Thank you! My daughter (freshman) also needs a book. I told her we could probably find it cheaper somewhere else. I’ll check those out to see what we can find. My daughter’s schooling is being paid for by Financial Aid. Worst case, she should be able to go to the bookstore and use her leftover financial aid to pay for her book, right?

I’m not sure since I just pay out of pocket but I’m sure the financial aid office or the bookstore will be able to help get you some answers on that.

I’d advise waiting until the first week to buy the books because almost if not all of my classes didn’t ever use the books and most can be found for free online

Thank you! This is the advice I was searching for!

I'll mirror the other comments and advise you to wait until that first class meeting. The professor might have a book in mind; there might be a standard book the department uses for the course, but the professor prefers something different; or they might even provide you with a link to a free eBook version.

Thank you! That’s the current plan! Fingers crossed I don’t need them because all my books and software (mystatlab) are going to be another $1000 out of pocket 🤦🏻‍♀️ ETSU is way more expensive than community college 😭

It certainly is! But, it can still be worth the cost.

Just a heads up, along with being very expensive, mystatlab absolutely sucks rotten eggs. I remember having to use it, ironically enough, at my community college. Prob and stats is one of the most useful classes you could ever take if you want to defend yourself against misinformation, working in any scientific field, or ever get involved in research. Try to power through the awful tool, connect with the instructor as best you can, and take full advantage of the tutoring center.

The people in the tutoring center not only know the material well, but they also know how to work with stuff like mystatlab. TriO is another great resource to connect with if you are eligible.

Good luck! Have fun! Welcome to ETSU!

Interestingly enough, I already took Stats (and used MyStatLab) at the community college and ended up with a 97 for the semester. It was one of my favorite classes! I’m kind of bummed I have to take it again though. Because it was just Statistics, ETSU won’t accept it since I need “Business Statistics” 🫠 Thankfully, I kept all my class notes and assignments so I’m hoping this class will go smoothly for me. Thank you so much for the encouragement and advice! Hopefully, I can utilize all the resources that ETSU has to offer 🫶🏼
