Festivals I did the impossible

Fringe has come and gone. And so have the flyerers. But this year I made it through the whole of August without being given a single flyer when walking around the city. And considering I live in old town and every time I left the flat there were flyerers everywhere, I'm pretty impressed I haven't accumulated a small trees worth of plasicy paper like I do most years.

I did wonder if there were fewer flyers about - didn't feel I was dodging them as much this year.

I achieve this every year. You just need a good thousand yard stare and withering look. Embrace your inner misanthrope ;)

Fringe flyers haven’t tried putting flyers in your pockets if you do that for a good few tees now.

you can just... not take them lol. "no thanks!" and carry on walking

You'd think that, but this year is the first year I haven't had a single flyer forced into an empty hand as I walked by at speed...

Can't say I've ever had that happen in 24 years of living in this city! How are they gaining access to your hands!? Just move your hand away, surely?

Usually when you're stuck behind slow moving crowds, looking for the gap and not actually looking at the person trying to flyer you, obviously moving away and dropping is an option but I try not to litter

Except when they walk past you and dump it on the table

Worked for me this year

I didn't take a single flyer despite treating others as human and kindly saying 'no thanks'

I just say, “no thank you,” but each to their own

Obviously wearing a dirty trackie carrying a can of tramp juice and shouting obscenities works.
Good work man.

me and my girlfriend made it our mission to get as many flyers as possible! ended up having great laughs with all the flyerers and going to a really great comedy show. i guess the fringe isnt all bad 🤔

I nearly did, and then I walked past a guy that said my hair looked like I used Jesus tears as conditioner. so I took his lol.

Managed to completely avoid the town centre for the whole of august apart from passing through on my way to Deftones and Prodigy. You aren't a true local until you are completely avoiding the festivals.

Fuck that, I love the fringe. Biggest arts and comedy festival on the planet on my doorstep. I can see several great comedy shows and sleep in my own bed? Ace!

What absolute bullshit, gatekeeping 'true local' behaviour is unbelievably pathetic. Anyway, 50% of tickets are sold to EH postcodes, so you're also just entirely wrong

Students and perpetual travellers who stay in the city for a year before moving on to some other tourist trap.

Oh so you've actually got evidence to support this then, or is it just more nonsense you're spouting? Also, 'people who don't think and act exactly the same as I do aren't really from here' has very strong 'outsiders not welcome' vibes, which is saying a lot more about your character than I think you anticipated

What an ignorant comment.

Why would you be ‘completely avoiding the festivals’?

Towns too busy, too ugly with all the posters, so much litter, so much overpriced booze/tat everywhere. 99% of the shows are garbage. Used to go to a lot. Seen enough shit comedy for a lifetime now.

Keep your hands in your pockets too

Walking with a purpose seems to work in my favour and avoiding eye contact.

I don't get given flyers because they can't force me to take them. Easy. I just shake my head and move on.

I got through iy without getting a single fringe flyer, but not without being given over 10 Christian flyers in less then 2 hours, at one point I ripped it up infront of them

Well done! In recognition of your accomplishment, please accept this Special Achievement Certificate... HA!!

Same, but I skipped the Mile so I didn't see anyone. If I went up town, I mainly walked down Rose St.

That might be part of the reason for poor attendance at some shows. I live in the city centre too and it was relatively anonymous this year.

TikTok replacing flyers

What's your secret? No eye contact? Or eye contact but with corresponding RBF? Tell us your ways.

I work in the city centre so was inundated with flyers. Took every single one. Went to a couple shows only, but I feel bad seeing everyone walk past them lol

I have lived here for 5 years and never once took a flyer. Just march past, like the Mormons.

I would have also won if one of the cunts didn't chase me down on my bike in the meadows to put one in my basket while I was repeatedly telling him "no thanks"

Slowed me down but it was satisfying to pull up the the next bin and toss it in eyeline of him

It's about time they knocked flyers on the head.

Maybe I just look like an arsehole, or maybe the flyer-distributors can sense my complete lack of desire to see yet another groundbreaking, unprecedented solo show told entirely from the perspective of a menstral cycle

I find cat pee (under my gills) removes the impulse of even the most determined flyerer coming my way.

Come to think of it, nobody came my way. Hmm.
