General New User Guide for r/Edmonton - Please read first

NEW USERS of r/Edmonton - kindly read this first

To post or comment in r/Edmonton, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • Accounts need to be a week old.

  • You need to have a verified email address.

  • You need to have a minimum amount of TEN (10) COMMENT karma from participating in OTHER SUBREDDITS than r/Edmonton.

Why? This helps keep bad actors away, like trolls and banned users. It also helps users new to reddit to have a chance to learn how to use reddit outside of r/Edmonton.

#IF YOUR ACCOUNT HAS NOT FULFILLED ALL THREE REQUIREMENTS ABOVE, YOUR POSTS AND COMMENTS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE DELETED BY THE AUTO-MODERATOR.

#How to verify your email for new users :

To verify your email on Reddit, either click the verification link in the email you received when creating your account or go to Settings > Account Settings and choose Update email address to resend the verification email.     _Once you request it, open your email's inbox, find the verification email, and click the link inside to complete the process._

  - On the web -

• Go to your account settings by clicking your profile icon and then selecting Settings.

  • Click on Account Settings.

  • Find the email address section. If you see an option to "resend verification email" or similar, click it.

• Alternatively, you can navigate directly to reddit.com/prefs/update/ to find the email settings.

  -- On the app --

• Tap your profile icon.

• Go to Settings.

• Select Account Settings.

• Tap Update email address.

• Tap the button to Resend verification email.

#What is the difference between POST karma and COMMENT karma?

Post karma is earned when users upvote the original submissions (links, images, text posts) you create, reflecting your ability to share engaging content.

_Comment karma is earned when your replies to others' posts are upvoted, showing your active participation and contribution to discussions. Both are totaled for your profile but often used separately to satisfy subreddit restrictions._

POST KARMA:

Gained from creating threads or posting links. It indicates a good ability to initiate conversations.

COMMENT KARMA:

Gained from replying to posts or other comments. It indicates active participation in community dialogue.

Key Differences: Post karma rewards content creation, while comment karma rewards interaction.

#Some subreddits (like r/edmonton) require specific thresholds of either type (or both) to prevent spam, often looking at post, comment, or combined totals for restrictions.

Both types of karma are not a 1:1 ratio with upvotes; instead, they represent a weighted score from community upvotes, reduced by downvotes.

(In order to post in r/Edmonton - you need to do THREE things:)

  • your account must be a WEEK old (7 days)

    • you need to have TEN (10) COMMENT karma
    • you need to have a verified email address

ONCE AGAIN, IF YOUR ACCOUNT HAS NOT FULFILLED THESE THREE (3) REQUIREMENTS YOUR POSTS AND COMMENTS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE DELETED BY THE AUTO-MODERATOR.

Education Disappointed with my child's high school English education. Anyone else? Advice?

I'll start by saying - I really don't know how to navigate this at all and I'm hoping someone here - especially fellow parents, teachers or admins - can give me some advice. My child was in grade 10 last year and had English in the 2nd term. They didn't learn how to write an essay and weren't required to write one. They didn't read a single novel. They didn't read a play. If I understand correctly, they did some sort of analysis and wrote short personal responses to some short stories and photographs. I really find this unacceptable. How are kids going to survive university if they have no practice reading long texts and writing essays? How does this even meet the curriculum?

I thought - maybe it's just the teacher. She'll have a new one this year and I'll get her a tutor and catch her up. But I've learned that she'll have the same teacher again. The school is declining to switch her to a new teacher as they don't consider wanting a different teacher to be a valid reason to switch a class.

Where do I go from here? Am I just old and out of touch? Is this normal now? I will go ahead and email the principal directly now, but I genuinely doubt that one parent's concerns are enough to prompt a teacher to change the content of their course.

Appreciate everyone's thoughts.

Discussion Costco forcing employees to park on public roads is creating a serious safety issue

Costco locations across Western Canada are requiring employees to park off-site/on surrounding public roads rather than in their parking lots.

At the Edmonton Business Centre, this is becoming a legitimate safety concern on 104th ave NW.

Employees are parking along the surrounding roads, and the number and placement of vehicles is obstructing visibility for drivers trying to cross or enter intersections. There have already been multiple near misses because drivers can't properly see oncoming traffic without slowly creeping their vehicles out into the intersection. Every morning I cross 104th ave at the Costco business center to get into my work's parking lot, and have nearly been struck three times creeping forward attempting to see past all these vehicles. On Monday morning there were more then forty cars parked alongside the street.

Note that there is only a sidewalk on 1/2 the street, and vehicles speed 60-70km down this road regularly, making it unsafe to be parking there. Not to mention in winter, where the cars are parked, is where the snow is cleared to. If they park there during the winter the road will effectively be turned into a one-way.

And this is Edmonton. We're talking about a city that can see -30°C to -40°C temperatures and significant snowfall. Employees are being expected to park away from the building and walk in these conditions without a sidewalk while the employee vehicles themselves are creating visibility issues on nearby roads. Parking enforcement & bylaw have been notified, but in our experience it’ll take weeks for them to get around to this.

I understand Costco wanting to prioritize parking spaces for customers, but surely there has to be a safer solution than pushing employee parking onto public roads and creating hazards for both employees and other drivers.

Someone found this sweet little void on 104st and 100ave Downtown and brought him in to my work. I brought him home for now to give him food and litter but hope he gets home! He’s got what looks like used to be a scratch down his side but is now growing hair back over it and is incredibly playful and friendly

Our tax dollars hard at work encouraging separation.

Discussion Why is everyone seemingly OK with rescinding our rights to an enjoyable and peaceful core in favour of motorcycles and obnoxious vehicle owners?

Am I taking fucking crazy pills? Why are motorcycles and obnoxious vehicle owners seemingly allowed complete and total reign over Edmontons core?

I was in Enily Murphy this evening and it was like Rad Torque raceway was right next fucking door.

Why is EPS so complacent? Why is Council so quiet and utterly flaccid on this issue? Why is it okay for our core to be turned into the personal raceway for insecure douchebags? Its fucking insane and becoming utterly unbearable.

We deserve so much better than this.

Restaurants/Food What local hospitality establishment lost your regular business through passive neglect?

Not by outright hostility but by taking your patronage for granted, seeming annoyed by your regular presence, feeling entitled to an enhanced tip, dropping their friendly facade etc. Like you are the nuisance Uncle or Mother In Law that can't take a hint to stop dropping in.

To the point that you got fed up and decided to take your business elsewhere.

Commuting/Transit Laptop on LRT?

Hey all. So I’m attending NAIT this year. And I was thinking of taking the LRT to get to school, and then using that time to study on my laptop so I’m not wasting 30-45 mins of drive time twice a day. I was telling this to my brother, and he thought I was crazy to consider pulling out my expensive laptop on the LRT, and in his 4 years of taking the train to the UofA he never would have considered that.

I’m wondering if he’s maybe over reacting a little? Or is he right in that it’s probably a bad idea and I should just drive or not expect to get any work done. I also have no textbooks or anything, all of my coursework is done on my laptop, so it’s not like I can do non laptop work.

Any opinions, thoughts, and help appreciated. Thanks!

Question Does the Edmonton Humane Society usually have more cats than what they list on their website?

I was just wondering if there are usually more cats than what is listed on the EHS website. For example, they currently have 11 listed - is that about how many would be there in person?

Hi Edmonton.

I'm a local filmmaker and a short documentary that I made about Edmonton artist Jeffrey Adam Meszaros - JAM Bottle Cap Art is premiering at the Edmonton International Film Festival on September 27th at 1pm. It's screening along 3 other short documentaries.

Jeff has a very cool story and the film was made with an all Edmonton crew. I'm excited to finally get to share it with an audience.

You can get tickets here if you are interested.

General Fall term at MacEwan

I’m attending university at 32 years old and feel a little out of touch with school. Was curious if anyone had any advice on things I can do at MacEwan that will have me engaged, socializing and meeting new people.

Hoping I can meet individuals around my age :)
