Moderator Cyclospora Discussion

Hello fellow sufferers and our loved ones!

We will not be allowing any further posts about Cyclospora in this sub, and I want to explain why:

It is very common for people with our phobia to latch onto health risks that we hear in the news and to convince ourselves that we are suffering from them or to drastically adjust the way we live our lives due to the news. This can contribute drastically to flareups and obsessive and compulsive behaviors and this is not safe or healthy for anyone.

Conversation conversations regarding Cyclospora thus far in the sub consist of a lot of of unnecessary food, restricting and a lot of unnecessary panicking and fear, including people trying to diagnose themselves with Cyclospora.

The reality is that the vast vast vast majority of people in the United States will never come across Cyclospora in anything they eat. There are over 300 million people in the United States and the outbreak of Cyclospora is in the single digit thousands.

Almost every single person coming to this sub who has experienced stomach discomfort or nausea or diarrhea does not have Cyclospora. This is not meant to reassure you; it is the simple statistic that ruminating on sensations you feel or things you are experiencing in your body as potentially being cyclists for a is leading you to panic and restrict your food for absolutely no reason and is therefore causing you harm.

While we know it is difficult right now to trust the CDC, there are some guidelines that are reasonable safe practices to reduce your risk of getting Cyclospora or any parasite that lives in groundwater or soil or manure:

https://apnews.com/article/cyclospora-produce-washing-tips-022730ccbc514e15b1f0021c47bf1b68

Going forward, you are welcome to comment on this post if you need some more information about the outbreak, but please refrain from commenting on unrelated posts suggesting that people are suffering from cyclospora.

Moderator Response to Rule Concerns

Hello all,

As I am sure you all know, there has recently been some disagreement on how best to handle the matter of reassurance seeking. Through comments, posts, and at times PMs, we have heard your concerns. We as the mods have all at some point been where you are, where it feels like sometimes all you need is reassurance, through the guise of comfort. The more you receive it, the more it can be difficult to calm down and think rationally without it, and we all fully understand that. If you are relatively new to the sub, you may be surprised to hear that this sub actually used to lean too far in the opposite direction (constant false reassurance, sharing of what foods are safe and which are not, sharing unhealthy coping mechanisms and safety behaviors, etc.) and a significant number of peoples’ phobias became worse for it.

Whether you are in recovery or not, reassurance is harmful. We are absolutely not forcing anyone into recovery, and in no way telling you how to live your life- all we are doing is ensuring that harmful behaviors have no place here, on THIS sub. It remains that we will continue to keep actively harmful behavior out of the subreddit, and if you do not agree with that decision and are not open to mature communication and working together to better the sub, we encourage you to consider other subs for your posts.

All of that being said, a recent grievance post was made to the subreddit about these concerns. Some of the comments, along with some messages we have received privately, are in no way a constructive way to share your concerns or disagreements regarding something. Being unkind will get none of us anywhere. However, we saw one comment in particular stating that we have not given a genuine, true response to these concerns. While we have given genuine responses through comments and PMs, we understand that is not easily visible to everyone, which prompts this post.

If you have concerns that you would like to discuss respectfully, or suggestions for how we can best make this sub feel welcoming while maintaining the discontinuation of encouraging or participating in harmful behavior, we would like to see your comments here. This post will be pinned, for future reference and ease of viewing for all users. Your suggestions will be genuinely read, and replied to (so long as you aren’t a troll, or so long as there aren’t so many that some are missed). If suggestions come to light that we and you all feel could make the sub a better place, then they can be implemented moving forward.

Ideally, we can keep the communication about this to PMs or this pinned post, to avoid muddying the sub with the same thing over and over, or arguments beneath unrelated posts. Moving forward, if comments that disagree with these rules are rude towards the moderators, including namecalling, disrespectful language, falsely accusing the mods of saying things we did not say, or anything related to those, they will be removed under Rule 1. We aim to be civil and understanding in our interactions, and we ask the same. Thank you in advance for your respectful comments; we look forward to hearing from you.

Question Should I go on a boat trip?

Upvotes

So I am heading to Antalya, Turkey on holiday in a few weeks and we really want to do the Green Canyon boat tour near Side.

Because of my emetophobia and somewhat bad travel sickness (mainly in cars and roller coasters), I have already said no to a 5 hour long dolphin boat trip which could potentially be on rough water.

I get nauseous when I’m anxious and I’m already worrying about not being able to escape if I do get nauseous (I’ve never been on a boat before).

Has anyone else ever done a short 2 hour boat trip in a canyon? I’m guessing as it’s just like a big lake there will be no waves? Help lol

Question Is it possible to overcome emetophobia with no therapy?

Hi, i’m F23. In the past i went to therapy for other reasons but now i can’t afford it and i don’t have any other options.

I have suffered from emetophobia since i was a kid due to a stomach flu that turned into a whole trauma. It’s been like 10+ years and i still remember the feeling of losing control over my body and not being to stop what was going to happen.

The last time i felt like i was seriously going to v*, i had a panic attack and passed out. Today i felt nauseous and i forced myself to swallow constantly because i was afraid that something was coming back up.

I don’t think i can live like this anymore but i don’t know what to do. Does anyone have any advice? :(

Needing support - Panic attack it’s gonna happen

I’ve been sick with a cold since yesterday (technically the day before but that was just the little scratchy throat you get in the beginning). I’ve been getting really bad postnasal drip and gas (?) and I woke up feeling so sick (it’s 4 am, woke up at like 3:30). I took emetrol and now I’m sitting on the floor of one of the stalls in the dorm communal bathrooms (which is ALSO an anxiety inducing thing for me) and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna throw up very very soon (like any minute/second now). I only got 2 hours of sleep before this too because of how much my throat was hurting and I only managed to grab my phone and earbuds with me so no meds or anything besides that first emetrol dose. I’m so scared and shaking so much, I wish I had never chosen to go to university so I wouldn’t be in this situation. I don’t know how to handle this especially since I have classes with strict attendance policies and I am so scared of throwing up around other people and I know everyone’s asleep now but what if theyre not

Needing support - Panic attack I’m scared I ate something bad

I don’t see why it would’ve been. It was in date, tasted fine, looked fine, smelled fine. I’ve been anxious all day due to other reasons so it could full well be that but the timing between me eating and me having a bowel movement is making me panic it was that

I was kinda hungry so I just had one of the curry flavoured pot noodles, not anything I hadn’t had before but anyways. About twenty minutes after eating my stomach did not feel right, was hurting and tensing pretty bad. I have ibs and this mornings bowel movement was on the constipation end which I do usually expect, however after I’d eaten this it seems to be leaning towards the diarrhea end in comparison to earlier and I’m freaking out

I’m scared that for one I’ll have diarrhea, I don’t know why but I can’t stand my body expelling any form of liquid from either end, and then the obvious being throwing up by food poisoning

I’m panicking and my brain is so foggy I don’t know what to do, please help

Does Anyone Else...? Feel nauseous everytime I go out

Does anyone feel extremely nauseous every single time they go out. Like everytime I go outside I feel so nauseous and it’s actually the worst. The first time it happened was around 4 months ago when I was out with friends just eating some food and then going to the beach but on the way there and the whole day I felt so like sick and nauseous and when I went to take a bite of some food, I went to the bathroom and just threw it up and I knew I couldn’t eat from there and then on the bus ride to the beach was the worst thing imaginable I was so nauseous that I wanted to die. The following days I was a bit scared of food and then school came by and it was the worst, every second I was nauseous and it was genuinely the worst feeling ever, imagine sitting in a whole school assembly and being on the verge of throwing up but you know your not going to throw up your just extremely nauseous and you can’t just get up and ask to go toilet. Everytime I go out or think about going out with friends I’ve known for 8 years it’s the worst because I physically can’t go out because I’ll just feel so nauseous. It still goes on today and I’ve been to the doctor and done every test but they still can’t find the problem, they prescribed me some nausea medication and that helped for about a week but it’s starting to not help anymore and I can’t take it forever. I don’t think I have anxiety or anything but does anyone have or had this problem?

Techniques, tips and tricks Help for my 13yr old son

Hey, so my son has been battling with emetophobia for about 5 years now. It’s been a rollercoaster where he has a handle on it and then something can trigger him to the point of him being anxious for months.
Recently he’s been getting severe panic attacks to the point of passing out. And he has missed lots of school over it too.
Basically I just wanted to know if anyone had experienced it young and any things you found to ground yourself so I can better help him through his hard times with it.

P.s
He is currently undergoing CBT again
I do all the work with him at home too.

Question Norovirus living on surfaces

I need facts. So I read that it lives on surfaces for weeks, but does that just mean shared surfaces? I’m worried because my coworker possibly had it, then touched things I touched. I’m worried I touched stuff she did, then touched my phone. I brushed a bleach and water mixture into my phone when I got home, and washed the case with soap and water, and now almost 48 hours later am worried because I touched my phone, then pet the dog, then kissed the dogs forehead. I washed my lips with soap and water but I’m also worried because I opened a ice cream cup and my thumb touched the packaging and then my spoon touched it and I think I touched my phone before opening the ice cream. I know noro survives on surfaces but it seems unlikely right?

Potentially Triggering Severe anxiety towards food inspections in America

Sorry if this is something not allowed to be discussed due to current circumstances, but my god, I can’t deal with it anymore. NOTHING feels safe to eat. I have microwave meals because I can’t cook for myself (it is something I plan on doing but my current living situation has prevented it) and even home cooked meals are just.. Ugh.
I guess I just want to know if I’m alone in this, it’s made me relapse severely in therapy progress and with an ED I’ve been coming back from. I’m just feeling so doomed and I’ve had multiple panic/anxiety attacks due to this, any advice? Maybe some coping practices, I’m open to trying any positive skills
also sorry if formatting is weird, i’m on mobile and typing this to get it off my chest

Rant Kid has norovirus and threw up all over me. Twice.

I’m cooked, aren’t I? I’m just sitting here waiting. Wishing it was a simple “fml haha” and not like my life is collapsing before my eyes and dreading the next few days like I’m waiting on death roll. Also the constant exposure until kid gets well because it’s just me taking care of him. So idk when this nightmare will end.

It Happened (TW) It happened again

I love how my last post on Reddit was the last time this happened. 146 days ago. Since then I got treatment and help but I’m starting to worry it didn’t do anything. I prevented it. Told myself it would happen. Mentally screamed as I felt the bile rising up my oesophagus. But I couldn’t stop it.

It was anxiety, I know that much. I didn’t even have anything to vomit up. My brain was just out to get me and now I feel like a complete failure. If anyone has any advice, please let me know. I need someone to talk to right now.

Needing support - Panic attack Accidentally Ate Old String Cheese

Okay so I'm freaking out. I took a bite of one of my low calorie string cheeses (Cheesehead brand) and it tasted a little odd, which prompted me to look at the BB date. It was dated 29 JUN 26! I literally purchased it from Walmart today and it's 2 months past it's BB! Everything online says it should be fine as long as it was sealed and there are no visible signs of mold -which there wasn't- but I'm still freaking out, especially since the taste and texture was off. Like a little stronger and a bit more dry. Someone tell me I'm overreacting right now, please.

Needing Support - Non-Emet related My apartment is falling just when i thought my recovery was going good.

Hi, I’m 21 years old and live with my mom, and my two younger brothers, 11 and 7. Our apartment is falling apart badly. Some context is my mom owns her own business and she’s going into her slow season, she only has 1.5k for the winter. Our only hope right now is a condo we don’t hear about for another 9 months. Some organization to help low income families. I am chronically ill and just stepped down to part time at my job.

For years we have struggled with ants, then became ants and mice and now it’s ants, mice and cockroaches. My brother came into my room and told me my mom needed me, I walked downstairs and my mom was sobbing. She had a cockroach in a cup. The first one we’ve seen. On top of all this infestations our roof has been leaking severely, our toilet was leaking and we got that fixed but now the tiles of the bathroom are popping up because of it. We have centipedes as well and one bit me the other day… lol. This house is driving us all insane and making us extremely ill. The electrical system might actually harm us one day. For example the whole top floor is on the same breaker and when you look at the breaker box a whole row is unused. Another example that we found out, we put in the new dishwasher and the Best Buy employee couldn’t finish because the plug for the washer was connected by an extension cord and plugged somewhere in the basement.

It’s a connected house so my neighbour is dealing with the same thing. Expect he has a hole in his wall and rain and snow get into his bedroom.

Our landlord thinks because he hasn’t raised our rent in years he doesn’t have to do much. My mom has been a sobbing mess all day and she can’t control it in front of my little brothers. On top of that we have two cats, one who is 15 and another who is 3. The 3 year old we are worried might eat something.
Everyday is something new with this house.

About me going part time I was borderline agoraphobic because of my emetophobia. I was already struggling with the thought of mice in the home but cockroaches? Are we kidding. Doesn’t help my mom is talking like it’s doomsday which is understandable. I was doing good and didn’t need Zofran but after all this I had to take one. To say I am scared is an understatement. Doesn’t help my mom says we aren’t allowed to tell anyone so that means not asking family members for help. We are only allowed to eat at the dinner table now, that means snacks included. This is throwing me off, I don’t even wanna eat anything anymore and I was doing so good with eating.

Venting - Advice wanted please help

today my mom forgot to freeze my icepack, so at school I ate a sandwich with sliced tomato and mozzarella cheese in it for lunch. after I ate it I realized that the icepack wasn't cold, so I texted my mom and she said she forgot to freeze it overnight so it was only in the freezer for like 10 minutes this morning which makes it useless.

I'm so scared, I ate food that had been at room temperature for over 5 hours. I dont know what im going to do. I really dont want to get sick if I get sick im going to freak out so much. please help me

Question Can animals be affected?

so I'm adopting a cat in 3-5 days and the owner just texted me that's she's extremely sick with the stomach virus. That was all the detail I got and I'm curious on whether my cat will carry the pathogens or anything when I get him? it's making me not want to adopt him anymore which makes me feel heartless but I'd prefer to avoid getting sick. everywhere online is giving me different answers and I just want to know if my soon to be cat is a ticking time bomb for the stomach virus

Rant A little scared about a visit tomorrow

So I live in a really small apartment, and while I am happy with my own place, I didn't realize it came with "so many" appointments. About two months ago someone had to come make a new energy label, but he was gone after like 2 minutes so it wasn't that bad. However, tomorrow I'm having a guy coming into my apartment to clean my ventilation system and he needs to be in my bathroom, kitchen and my utility closet, and he'll be there for a good while (30 to 90 minutes is what it says.) Not sure how long this is going to take but because it's such a small space I'll be in very close contact with him and I have past trauma so I'm taking someone with me so I won't be alone with him. But of course the worries begin again:

- What if he asks to use my toilet, or he doesn't ask and just goes to the toilet without permission? I'm being really weird about my toilet, like I do not want strangers using it.
- What if he gets s* when doing the job?
- What if he has been s* and a day later comes back to work while still contagious?
- What if he just went to another customers house who was s*?

I can't be the only one thinking like this... I wanna set clear boundaries but at the same time I have a hard time telling people "no" even if it's my own personal space. I don't know, it feels like my personal space will be contaminated with something and I'm freaking about it. I've been to therapy about this phobia but it didn't work for me (clearly, lol)

Anyways, next week I am in the same exact position as someone has to close tubes in my utility closet because I get horrible smells from upstairs neighbors in my house constantly and I cannot escape it, even with ventilation 24/7. He also has to go through my kitchen because the hood of my stove is having a similar issue but then it's me being able to hear the private conversations and phone calls of someone who lives 2 levels above me, through it.

Potentially Triggering Guidance

Hi guys,

My bf is a CNA and works in-home with the elderly, and today he got to work and his patient threw up due to “feeling dizzy after his dialysis” and my bf says his patient seems fine now and said he asked him if he was sick and he said no and that it was def from being dizzy and wiped out, but he had to clean up and is still around his client for the next couple hours. I’m soo anxious that it could be something contagious and not actually bc of dialysis and that my bf will get it and bring it to me🥲 is it fine to still see my bf as normal?

Rant At the end of my rope

Just needed to rant, currently dealing with some kind of stomach issue. At first I thought it was food poisoning, but it kind of evolved into an insane burning sensation in my stomach with a lot of nausea and I cannot for the life of me get comfortable no matter what position i put myself in. I took tums and pepto but it isn't doing much.

I've dealt with this phobia since I was 5. Got critical and almost died at 19 through related means, but made a miraculous comeback and became able to live mostly normally.

I'm older now, and I somehow degraded all the way back down the hole. After a series of events, I'm out of a job and have no health insurance, and now I'm out of money. My health issues are piling up both physically and mentally and I desperately need help, but I can't afford it. My condition is so terrible that I had to turn down a job interview I just got because I knew I wasn't going to be able to hold it as is.

I'm planning to give the suicide hotline a call to see if they have any resources for me to use. I just need to get ahead of this long enough to get my life back on track but I have no idea what my options are. I used to think it was really hard to screw your life up bad enough to have no ways out, but here I am.

Wishing you all well, keep fighting

Edit: also seek professional help as soon as you're able. If you still have any support system (ie parents) use everything you can. When you're this sick, broke and alone, it is literal hell
