Hiya, I’ve got my IELTS test on Saturday and I thought I was confident but now that it’s getting closer I can feel my confidence crumbling lol. I need a score of 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each band for college admissions. Stupidly haven’t really done anything so far aside from a handful of practice questions that I found online, since I only booked the test last week.

So now that I only have four work nights worth of prep time left, what would you recommend I focus on? Are there any skills that are super specific to IELTS that will throw off my results even if my English is generally good? I know about the weird “describe a graph” task and I hope it’ll be enough to name all the variables, describe overall trends and then include the most salient data points as evidence?

Also, it says the reading/listening/writing part will be on a computer but the speaking part will be in person. Does anyone know if my conversation partner will be an examiner or a testee themselves? I have the (bad?) habit of adopting simpler grammar and slowing down my speech when I realise somebody is struggling, so without wanting to sound callous I feel like my score would probably drop by a bit if I tried to have a friendly and cooperative conversation with an A2 learner. Or would they recognise I’m trying to accommodate the other speaker? I don’t want to be an asshole lol

Anyway I’d be very grateful for any and all recommendations, or even just reports of your own experience

I love English but TH really tested patience, lol. I was like "why would you ever do that?" while watching a tutorial on how to pronounce it. Fortunately, it's not absolutely necessary to pronounce correctly for your speech to be understood.

Hi guys, what do you think about this lesson structure I'm having on Preply?

My tutor is giving me the option to choose from a website a specific word (different topics) that each one contains 10 questions. So he asks me the question, I answer it and then he explains his point of view. We have 50 minutes.

At the beginning, I told him I wanted do improve my conversational practice and that was the proposed. I just have the feeling that is not enough because I don't talk too much, depending on the question. Sometimes I don't have vocabulary or feel stuck and can't speak well/a lot in the class. I would say I talk 30% in the class.

Besides that I'm consuming english very often, reading, writing, listening... Speaking is tough.

I would love to hear your thoughts about it.

Só fui entender hoje que talvez isso tenha a ver com o fato dele não ser morfologicamente tão amplo quanto o português, principalmente em relação aos diminutivos, aumentativos e às nuances que eles conseguem transmitir

Sempre que falo inglês, ou quando escrevo, sinto que às vezes falta alguma coisa para dar mais peso nas palavras, transmitir melhor uma emoção ou descrever uma ideia com mais precisão. No português, muitas vezes consigo fazer isso simplesmente modificando a própria palavra.

Vocês também se sentem assim? Como resolveram?

Like, we generally use -ie and after letter - C - we use -ei.

Example - Brief, achieve, hygiene, receive, deceive (exception - ancient).

How often do you hear it meaning to arrive or enter a place suddenly? And in what contexts do you hear it?

I saw this single sentence:

"He asked if I'd got my black eye in a fight - I told him the prosaic truth that I'd banged my head on a door."

and I understand what "He" asked as "Did you see that fight?", but I felt something off about my comprehension in no time, and my doubt was right.

I doubted myself as there is "get an eye in" instead of "get an eye on". Of course, many learners can easily understand that "He" asked "I" if "I" had got bruises on eyes.

To get to the point, I wonder if there is the moment "Get somone's eye in []" is used except for the creepy literal case....

Example: 'I barely slept last night, what with the festival going on outside my house'

I've been watching Eastenders (2008 episodes specifically) and I've heard multiple people use this construction. I'd never heard it before.

I'm wondering how common 'what with' is, whether it would be considered informal or not, if its usage is specific to certain English speaking countries, areas, backgrounds etc.

I'm a native English speaker, but that being said, English is a complex language and I'd like to know more about it.

If I am looking for full remission of tuition fees for an online course in my home country of the UK, for instance, where they offer partial or full discounts for those receiving welfare payments, they may use the conditional sentence "If you are in receipt of certain benefits".

If I am shopping at a supermarket, I can get the machine to print a receipt for me to confirm both my order and that I have successfully paid for it.

If I am talking about revenue earned by the tax authority or by a business, I can talk about it in terms of either tax or company receipts.

How come receipts can be used interchangeably for both what you have paid and for what you are receiving?

Would "a gush of air just hit my face" work?

Normally, for liquid, it would be "gush out" as a verb but what about air? Or maybe the natural to say it is just by using the verb "hit"?

For example, "As I was walking on the sidewalk, a huge truck passed by really fast causing the air to hit me hard".

I get that people do it out of good intentions, but I’m like: NOOO, LEAVE ME TO MY STRUGGLES 😭 Especially when it comes to speaking. I'm "on the apps" as they say, (Preply/Praktika/Anki), because I can just practice there with no pressure.

But with native speakers, I always feel like as soon as I pause for even a second, they’ve already switched back to English
