Discussion Why does the ship keep rotating back?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm coming from games like Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen, i get that this more arcady game, but is there a way to keep the ship in the position I want it to be?

Yep, in Settings > Input > Gamepad, you can disable Auto Roll in there if you prefer.

Another thing that you might like coming from ED/SC. Go in your key bindings and look for inertia dampeners. Map it to something. That's "Flight Assist On/Off".

Thank you! You saved my life.

Yeah, mapping this to something easy to use was a huge plus to my dogfighting.

Would you mind explaining what FA actuality does in NMS? I haven't really noticed anything "bad/uncomfortable" while flying, but I haven't really taken the time to play around with all settings

It's basically just inertia dampening (i.e. space friction) iirc, allowing you to face a different direction from the one you're moving in.

Ahhh I see.. that's definitely useful. I'll play around with that setting and check the results

Idk about NMS, but I think that's the point of flight assist, it makes flight easy and not uncomfortable. Sometimes it's fun to make it not that for a few seconds.

When you even nudge yourself in a particular direction, you will always keep going in that direction unless you nudge yourself to counterbalance it. This is because of the law of inertia and it is kinda ridiculous in space. Most space games handle that for you alot and put it under "flight assist." But if you turn it off, you get a pretty raw physics experience of flying in space.

There are a lot of fun flight maneuvers you can pull off if you turn off flight assist for a few seconds. I like to keep mine set up where I have to hold a key to keep it off. Very easy to get flight assist back by just letting go of the key.

My favorite ones are always boosting in a direction, turning it off, spinning around (but my ship keeps moving in the original direction and speed without any engine use), and I can shoot backwards. Or even orbiting certain large options or ships.

It's alot of fun to mess with it. Literally free falling in all sorts of directions lol

Thanks for the reply. It definitely sounds useful when getting into dogfights. I'll check it out

Feel like there is an "align to galactic plane" setting.. thats more than a flight assist counter thrust to stop rotation.

No. Everspace has autolevel.

Is there a way to disable it?
