Discussion Beginners guide?

Hello. I am a bit of an older gamer; I have played all sort of games since the Atari days, but I just can't seem to grasp what Everspace is about. I have tried to get going a few times, I have seen and played the tutorial, I have read very superficially about what the game is about, but I just don't seem to get it.

Is there a guide or resource out there that can help me understand what this game is about? It's mechanics, flow or progression? I just really want to get going with it. I love space shooters and rogue lites but I feel lost.

Thank you in advance and sorry for any inconvenience.

Hey Veneboy.

I'll try to help as much as I can, but you seem familiar with rogue-lites so I won't dig too deep in there as you know the core loop mechanic.

In terms of ES1, your ultimate aim is to reach the last Sector, which is the furthest away from your start point. The reasons will be revealed as you progress via the storyline.
You'll encounter various NPC's along the way, who will either help you or seemingly hinder you, but again their aims will be revealed too.

Through the rogue-lite mechanic you'll progress as far as you can and ultimately die, but with your hard earned credits you'll be able to increase the power of your ship and piloting skill before your next run. So initially, Credits are king as they allow you to become stronger, faster. Most other resources will be lost when you die, so use them in game to craft/upgrade items.

My personal tip is always to increase your ability to earn credits first, with a little bit of survivability thrown in where you can. Rinse/repeat with the aim to progress further in terms of Sectors unlocked, storyline and resources.

Fuel is needed to keep jumping onwards to the next location, but you can try to jump with insufficient fuel but that will cause you to take damage which could lead to your demise too. At the end of each Sector there is a Jumpgate that will allow you to move into the next Sector.

There's plenty of situations you might find yourself in that might require a hasty jump and you can't always hang around a location too long as the Okkar forces are chasing you down.

There's a few space anomalies that you'll want to avoid as well as something else that isn't keen on humans, other than the Okkar.

Always feel free to ask more questions as I'm being a little vague to not spoiler anything, but also check out the Wiki as that has some great information from our community should you need it. (Be warned there are spoilers in there!)

Have you ever played Deep 3D on Symbian phones (2009) or Galaxy on Fire 2 on Android ?

Everspace is very similar to those 2 but more advance with longer/better story.

Read Everspace wiki hosted on Fandom, there are many guides for many different things.

I'm a 55 year old gamer. First time I tried Everspace 1 was right after playing Everspace 2. I didn't get it at all and gave up on it pretty quickly. Fast forward a few years, I tried it again and fell in love with it. I unlocked everything that could be unlocked, and ended up with about 250 hours of play time. If you put in a little bit of time and effort, and if you like space shooters, I'm sure you'll love it too.

EverSpace 1 or 2?

It's been a few years since I played 1.

Part of EverSpace 1 is that you figure out more of the story and the context unfolds as you play through. I don't want to spoil too much of the storyline... but you find out that there's a bit of a conflict / war going on... and you need to navigate your own goals in the midst of the war.

There are different weapons and playstyles... I recall the ARC-9000, railgun, and lightning guns being extremely useful in ES1.

Your knowledge of rogue lites may be the issue you're having because Everspace is not like your normal rogue lite in my humble opinion. Typically in a Rogue Lite you progress by mastering the content, but that's not really needed for Everspace 1 because you earn credits that you spend at the end of every run to enhance your ship or your abilities which makes the next run easier thereby making mastering the content unnecessary. As long as a run provides you enough credits to enhance your ship at the end of that run, you are progressing even if you don't make it as far as the last run, this is very important to realize. Which means that dieing in Everspace 1 is not really a hinderence to progression, just the opposite, death enables you to spend your credits thereby ensuring progression. So really the only thing you need to understand is that you play, you earn credits, you die, you spend your credits and you progress. It doesn't really matter what you do or where you go, as long as you are earning credits you're progressing. This allows for complete freedom to do whatever you want. Don't be afraid of dieing, embrace it. I would sometimes just let myself get killed if a run was going sideways just so that I could then spend the credits I had earned up to that point and start fresh. It's very freeing.

Hope this helps.
