General info when traveling to the Faroes

We have been asked a few times to make a sticky with general good to know info, as a considerable amount of the posts in this subreddit are asking about what to do and how to get around and such. A large part of these questions can be answered or found out by checking the tourism office website out https://visitfaroeislands.com/

If there's something you think should be added to this post, or have some links, then let us know and I'll add it to this post to avoid clutter.

Getting around

Public busses and ferries

Busses in Tórshavn

Helicopter

Places to stay

What to see/do in a week or so?

Some exelent response to this question can be found here, Here, here and also, here and here will there be(at some point) links to similar posts.

Hiking

The hiking guide by the tourist office

Hiking.fo All sorts of good hiking advice, gets updated on a frequent basis

Mykines

Mykines is probably the most visited island(pr capita) in the Faroes, so be aware that there will be large crowds on this island with about 10 inhabitants. The general recommendation is to take the boat out and try to book a seat on the helicopter going back, this is to have the best chance of not getting stuck on the island, as the currents are very strong and can make boat access tricky (to put it mildly). This video from June 2017 shows the conditions at the harbor quite well https://www.flickr.com/photos/31322479@N04/34499712544/in/faves-23485843@N02/

Do respect the wildlife there by keeping proper distance to it, and the locals by not disturbing them with putting cameras through their windows, flying drones in the village etc.

Drones

The rules regarding flying drones in the Faroes are as follows.

  • Drones MUST NOT be flown within 150 metres of a village, town or city or within 150 metres of main roads that connect villages
  • Drones MUST NOT be flown within a 5-kilometre radius of Vágar Airport
  • Drones MUST NOT be flown above summerhouses or camping areas, or in places where many people are gathered, e.g. at festivals
  • Drones MUST NOT be flown above 100 metres from the ground
  • Drones MUST be insured
  • Illegal flying of drones in the Faroe Islands can result in a fine of DKK 5000.

Breaking these rules may also result in some irrate local(depending somewhat on location) taking a potshot at it with a shotgun, and I wouldn't blame them.

And so on and so forth...(to be updated over the coming days/weeks)

Campgrounds open in September?

Upvotes

Hi! I will be traveling to the Faroe Islands next week and renting a campervan to road trip around during my stay. I am having a little bit of trouble finding campgrounds for the camper that will for sure be open in September during my stay, 8-16th. I see quite a few campgrounds across the islands but looks like a lot of them close at the end of August.

Does anyone know of some besides the one in Tórshavn that stay open this late in the season?

Hiking in mid-October

Hi,

me and my girlfriend would like to visit the Faroe Islands this mid-October.

Our main activity would be to hike for the views. We don’t mind the possibly challenging weather but we would like to hike the best routes for the best views. Is it common for the trails to be closed due to high winds etc. during this time? And if so, how long are the trails usually closed?

Mid-September Itinerary (8 Days)

Hello everyone! Me and my friend are visiting Faroe Islands in a couple of weeks, so I would like to share our itinerary, would be glad for some feedback on it!

Our goal is to avoid most popular spots and paid hikes. We will be traveling using public transport (and on foot, of course :)). We are rather fit and have experience with mountain hikes in the Alps and other mountains, including overnight hikes with backpacks in our country (EU). Not saying it means it is going to be easy for us on the Faroe Islands, just letting you know that we are physically fit.

Day 1 (Friday): Arrival (18:40), buying a weekly transport card, walking/taking a bus to (depending on the weather) to Giljanes Hostel.

Day 2 (Saturday): Vágar. Hike around Vágar island (Hike #1, around south-eastern part of the island, author: u/Known_Fisherman_1463), but excluding the waterfall. And going to Klovningur in the evening.

Day 3 (Sunday): Northen Eysturoy. Getting to our accommodation in Gøtugjógv (Bus 300 and 400 with some walking) to leave our luggage there and then go Søldarfjørður - Norðragøta hike. In case of unfavourable weather we would go to Klaksvik instead.

Day 4 (Monday): Fuglafjørður - Hellurnar - via Altarið, found this one on visitfaroeislands.com. Or, should we better go to Kunoy? I would love to go there, however not sure, if this makes sense considering that we are traveling with public transport. Any suggestions?

Day 5 (Tuesday): moving to Tórshavn, as we have our final accommodation there. Taking Argir - Kirkjubøur and Kirkjubøur - Tórshavn hikes, then probably wonder around Tórshavn.

Day 6 (Wednesday) and Day 7 (Thursday): plans are to visit and hike through Nólsoy island (ferry is not included in a weekly bus card, right? And how long in advance should we book it? I saw that it is better to plan Nólsoy hike based on the weather forecast, that is why I leave either Day 6 or 7 for it, would there be available spots for the ferry 2-3 days in advance?)

As for the other day, we would go to Sandur for the Sandur - Søltuvík hike.

Day 8 (Friday): we have a flight in the noon, so we will take a bus to the airport in the morning.

Also, we would like to ask a couple of questions, thank you for sharing your experience:

  1. Weather. I understand that this is a crucial factor that can change our plans. What would you do in case of very unfavourable weather (and what to consider as unfavourable? All-day rain with high-speed wind?) - smaller hikes near accommodation/rest/town visits?

  2. Food/cooking - how expensive are the prices in the local supermarkets? Are they comparable with Norway? Any recommendations of the supermarkets and/or restaurants/bars (no fine dine please).

Thank you everyone replying and thanks to the users, who shared their experiences earlier, this helped much on our planning, we will definitely share our experience as well!

Burger King Hack

Potentially unethical, but I've discovered that if you select the 4 piece shaking nuggets under the menu category "campaigns" (promotions?), the 4 piece will check out as $0.00. I didn't think it would work but sure enough, I checked out with 3 orders of it at 0.00. It won't let you check out with only the nuggets selected, so I added a cheeseburger and my total ended up being only 28.00.

This will probably get patched if people abuse it but I thought it quite interesting. Let me know how long it takes to get patched

Trying to decide what to pack in my limited carry on bag, what i’m really debating is with the weather in september, would it be best to layer a fleece or puffer under a rain jacket? with the wind and wetness i know its a little unpredictable but only really have space for one in my pack

Hike prices

Hello everyone, I’m planning to go to the Faroe Islands next year in August for 7 days with my car as a 21 years old. I just wanted to know if what are the hikes where you need to pay for it. And are all of those guides free or you need some to go?

Faroese football fans: how is Brian Kerr remembered in the Faroe Islands?

His relatively short tenure came with 2 wins and a draw, the islands first wins in 8 years. Was he popular? Well liked? Any stories of his time on the islands?

Questions for a multi-day solo hike

Hi everyone,

I booked a trip in the middle of October and have some questions, mainly regarding about getting around.

I won't be hiring a car, my plan is to walk/hike to get around. I'm planning on starting in Sorvagur, and hiking towards Torshavn. I have been using kort.foroyakort.fo to look at the Cairn paths and plan a route. My main question regarding this, is how to cross the sub sea tunnel from Vagar. I read walking through the tunnels isn't really allowed, but the closest bus stop is from Sandavagur? Could I potentially hitchhike just to get past the tunnel to Leynar? Or is there a better way to do it?

Also, in terms of accommodation, do most towns have hostels or guest houses that can be booked on the day? I am not planning on staying in one spot more than a nigh, and due to the changing weather plans may change, so I'm wondering how flexible booking hostels/accommodation is.

Thanks in advance!

Need help Buying the New Faroe islands Adidas Jersey (wont ship to Canada)

Hi,

Like the title says I was wondering if someone could be my buying services for a new home and away Adidas soccer kit from Faroe Islands Footballs online shop? I just wanted to get the new home and away kit in XL.

They wont ship to Canada, so I was hoping I could pay someone to be my "buying services" and ship it to me for a fee of course.

I know its an odd request, but I am big fan of the national team and wanted to get it.

Thanks so much

Car rental at the end of September

Hi everyone,

I’m going to the Faroe Islands at the end of September and I’m currently looking for a rental car. So far, Rent.fo seems to be the best option I’ve found (but if you know of any better alternatives, I’d really appreciate the recommendations). I’m mainly wondering about their Gold Self Risk Insurance. Does anyone here have any experience with it?

It lowers the excess from around €1,200 to €335, but I’m not completely sure what exactly is covered. For example, does it cover relatively common things like a flat/damaged tire or a stone chip/crack in the windshield, or is it mainly intended for damage resulting from an accident? I’d rather know this before booking, especially since I’ll be driving quite a lot around the islands.

Thanks for any advice or personal experiences!

Thank you!

Christmas ornament souvenir

Random request, but does anybody know where I may be able to find a Faroe Islands themed Christmas ornament in Tórshavn or anywhere really? I have a tradition of buying a Christmas ornament every time I travel, but doesn't seem to be too easy a find here. I don't mind driving a bit. I'm here through Friday and am hoping to find something. I know it's not the right season for it, but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. This is the first time I haven't been able to find one.

December Visit

Hey all!

Hopefully there’s a few locals on here or anyone with experience. I’m planning a trip to Iceland at the end of December but as I’ve done Iceland 2x in the winter and and 4x in the summer now I figured why not add in two days to the Faroe Islands. I fly into Vágar the morning of the 28th form Keflavík and booked two nights in Sørvágur. I was planning to grab lunch and walk around before I check into my cottage. Then the bus is 250m from my cottage so get the first one of the day down to Tórshavn to explore before coming back on one of the last buses of the day. Then I’d be flying back to Keflavík on the 30th.

Just a short and sweet visit.

I know it’s going to be wet, cold, and limited sunlight but I’m very excited to make this trip. And if anyone has recommendations for a knit sweater from Tórshavn please share. Additionally I’m a chef so I love trying new foods - I’ve read lamb and salmon are the best here. Anything else I can try that won’t break the bank.

Thanks in advance!

Translation English to Faroese

Hello Native speakers!

I am a huge Eivør fan and want to get one of her lyrics tattooed: "Let it come. Bring it on."

But I don't want to get it tattooed in English.

(I don't want anyone to get it right away since it has a very personal meaning.)

I had the idea to translate it to Faroese.

Can you help me translate it?

Ai & Google told me it might be something like "Lat tað koma. Kom bara!" Would you say that's natural or shitty ai?

I need some "Føroyingur" to chat

Hi, I'm learning Faroese (I still don't have a1, but I'm working on it) and I know the best way to learn is having someone to chat with.

I'd generally chat in English and try to implement some phrases or words that I already know, I'd ask about some rules of the language and these things.

I'm interested in gaming (Minecraft and car games),

I like to discuss tech (I'm Android app developer and i use linux and custom phone privacy os, i ain't much into hardware but I love to discuss software in all kinds possible),

I love travelling (anything about the Faroes is good, I wanna move there in the future),

I also like singing and music overall.

I'm open to talk about anything, though.

I'm at Discord, WhatsApp and Messenger, unfortunately no ig (I've got a reason).

Thanks anyone who's interested, looking forward to talk!

Restaurants in Tórshavn

Hi!

I am planning a study trip to the Faroe Islands for about 30-35 students this September. We are staying in Tórshavn and planning to eat out 2 evenings - therefore I am looking for restaurant recommendations. We have a budget of about 350 DKK per person.

Do you have any recommendations?

What is life like in the Faroe Islands nowadays?

For those who live or have lived in the Faroe Islands, what is everyday life actually like nowadays?
I’m curious about the quality of life, social life, jobs, cost of living, weather, winter darkness, and how isolated it feels.

Is it a good place to live long-term, or does the isolation and small population eventually become difficult?

Is 1st week of September a good time to go ?

Planning to be in Faroe Island for 1at week of September , is it a good time to be in Faroe. Will be renting a car for the week and staying in the capital city hotel for the whole duration. Driving for day trips ? Is there anything or place I would need to pay extra on top of the car rental?

What are the most interesting, beautiful, or strange sounds and noises you’ve heard in the Faroe Islands? Field recordist seeks unique sounds!

I’m visiting the Faroe Islands soon for work (beer stuff at MBCFI), and one thing I really love to do is to search out unique sounds to capture as part of my field-recording practice.

Are there noises or sounds that you think are unique to life on the Faroe Islands that you could recommend? They don’t necessarily have to be nice sounds!

My practice and equipment allows me to focus on underwater, electromagnetic, subsonic, plain old atmospheric (ORFT stereo), physically transmitted sounds (via contact mics) and ultrasonic sounds, so please suggest anything at all you think might fit this bill.

In London I previously spent some time recording on the intertidal zone of the Thames capturing sounds of mud-larking. In Hong Kong I’ve captured everything from bats to the trams and Star ferries. In Manchester I’ve recorded bees feasting on sunflowers, unidentified underground insects, and even the sound of moss!

Weather in the Faroe Islands in early September?

I know the weather in the Faroe Islands can be very unpredictable, but I’m curious what it’s usually like at the beginning of September.

If you’ve been there around that time, how was the weather during your trip? And if possible, please share some photos from early September, I’d love to see what the landscapes actually looked like! 🇫🇴

No images via text and no voicemail?

Hey,

I just realized that voicemail doesn’t seem to exist here. It’s actually peaceful not having voice messages left. Also for texts with images is this something that just isn’t available or is my phone configured incorrectly? If it’s an iPhone it’s no issue as it’s through iMessage but plain texts won’t let me send images.
