Either Vader or Revan could have taken on Zeromus. Maybe Kreia could have talked him into submission via one of her humanities lectures.
Yoda was short-sighted here since Vader did redeem himself. His defeatist attitude resembles the cynical nature of Mysidia. Cecil was a dark knight and later became a paladin. After Cecil's redemption the Elder relents and forgives him for the crimes of Baron.

Golbez was closest to Vader and lost.
Cecil was closest to Luke and won.

I don't think Golbez in the state he is in at the end of the first game could have won. I mean, he literally can't use the crystal/get it to shed light, so Cecil has to do it to get Zeromus to become vulnerable/expose his final form.
17 years later in the sequel, he stands a chance. That's when both he and Cecil become more aware that there is no such thing as someone who is pure light or darkness and both of them take on more of their opposite traits (Cecil becomes evil through brainwashing and Golbez defends the human embodiments of light (Cecil, Ceodore, Kain to an extent) and becomes a defender of the crystals.

Star Wars was a massive influence on Final Fantasy, particularly IV and Sakaguchi’s vision for it.

The Star Wars influence doesn’t apply to the After Years with Sakaguchi and the original team long gone and uninvolved from the project
