REMAKE The Plot Ghosts
Finished Remake. The plot ghosts are so dumb its a hard barrier for me to pick up the next game.
When the plot ghosts killed Wedge, I became concerned that whatever they had planned was going to be stupid.
What these things are and why they're in the game is so baffling to me; a figuratively and literally mean-spirited way to defy the expectations of fans from the original. Like the writers are trying to say, "Look! Look! Aren't the limitations placed on you by these old ghosts sooooo annoying??? We can't imagine how annoying and restrictive it would be to be haunted by the ghost of the old game and constrained to making it the same way. Isn't it obnoxious how these ghosts are forcing YOU to make choices you wouldn't want to make? Do you feel like they're constantly in your way, constraining your freedom? How do you like it, huh!?" Just constantly shoving our noses in it.
That and, at the end of Remake, Aerith tells everyone we have to go get Sephiroth "because" and nobody questions it, no explanation, Barret is totally fine leaving his kid behind, everyone abandons their lifelong grudge match with Shinra all because flower girl said, "nuh uh now we do this."
What do you think? is the writing direction of Rebirth good? Should I give it a spin?
I admit, the original FF7 has a few flaws and contrivances, so it's reasonable to expect some in the remake. And there is a LOT that I loved about Remake, particularly how much extra time we got to spend with the characters before leaving Midgar. And I would never have guessed a scene focused on Barret would make me tear up.
When I think of those moments, I think Rebirth might be worth my money.
But then I think of the above and I'm concerned it will be a disappointment.
