Unpopular opinion, but what do you expect from Google? That they don't comply with US laws? Should Google sue the US Government for renaming Lake Ontario? On what grounds? Seriously, what should Google do, other than following US law? The problem really isn't Google here. It's your narcissistic clown in the White House. Btw. my German Google Maps still shows it as Lake Ontario. You can change your location settings to Canada and it will also still show up as Lake Ontario. This is a US problem, not a Google problem.

I mean the thing is it was done by executive order. Officially in the US it’s still Lake Ontario until they pass a new law saying it’s Lake America. All Trump did was effectively give it a nickname for federal workers, because that is the scope of an executive order.
So yes it is kowtowing because of all the bitching they did about the APs style guide after the ‘renaming’ of the Gulf of Mexico (which is also not officially renamed).

If they were complying with LAW, it would still be labeled Lake Ontario for UD workers, except maybe those veisiting from IP ranges designated to the executive branch. That is still the statutory name.
So yeah, other than following the law, what should they do?

Executive order is not a law. It carries the force of law, but specifically and only within the executive branch of the federal government.
The only thing that officially changes if a president changes a name via EO is documentation that the government uses. Google, a private company, is not bound in any way to that order. The name change essentially does not exist in any official, legal, or formal capacity. Which means that their compliance is purely voluntary and done so because it's less of a headache than defying the naked emperor.
If polymarket takes bets on it, I 100% expect the water renamings to be reverted within the first week of the next Democrat president taking office.

Still showing just Lake Ontario, me in Canada an hour's drive from Lake Ontario.
Fwiw, Google Maps shows "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)" for me, so I expect to see something similar as soon as my app updates itself. Fucking cravens...

Don't shoot the messenger here but we can't blame them as they follow the OFFICIAL naming of the jurisdiction they are based in. All the rage should be directed to the blob of fat in the White House.

Except that isn't the case. It's an executive order, not a law. EOs carry the force of law only within the executive branch of the federal government. If Google was a .gov website, owned and funded by taxes, it might be a different conversation. But as a privately owned company, they are not within the jurisdiction. Nothing about the renamings is official when it happens through EO.

Accused of? This isn't a case of he-said she-said, the map changed, the knee is clearly bent for all to see. As a journalist when someone says it's raining it's not your job to speculate about the plausibility of rain, to conjure experts to angrily debate whether it is or it isn't, and what it means if it is.
Your job is to stick your head out the fucking window and let us know whether it gets wet.
