Je me débrouille en français pour les conversations de tous les jours, mais je ne me souviens pas avoir entendu cette expression, même dans un film. Je dois donc avouer que je n’en ai aucune idée.

J'ai récemment visité la petite ville de Chapleau, en Ontario, le lieu de sépulture d'un auteur dont je n'avais jamais entendu parler avant mon voyage, Louis Hémon. Il est reconnu pour un roman que je n'ai pas encore lu, Marie Chapdelaine. Ça m'a fait réaliser que je ne connais pas assez d'auteurs canadiens-français – j'ai seulement lu Gabrielle Roy.
J'ai vu pas mal de films québécois (mon préféré est Mon oncle Antoine), mais j'essaie de regarder plus de films en français.

Any insight to the meaning of this French (Canadian) quote? Google translate translates it to "if drinking is a vice, then using a glass wedge is another" but I'm guessing its getting lost in translation?

Bonjour tlm, I've been building a collection of flashcards to really drill in vocab that I hear and see throughout the day but I am struggling to find the québécois pronunciation for certain words/phrases online (eg. Couldn't find anything for things like ben/bin, correct), specifically, I couldn't find ones that use real (and therefore much more accurate) voices. Is there some sort of dictionary that has a compendium of pronunciations that I could use (besides Wiktionary, as it often just says the pronunciation in IPA)? Merci!

I am Anglophone Canadian from Western Canada (although some of the older generations in my family were Fransaskois), and I have a desire as much as possible to try to learn to understand and aspire to speak in a French Canadian accent and way of speaking rather than Parisian. I have no interest in going to France, but a lot of interest in travelling to Québec, and I would much rather prioritize learning to speak and understand the way it’s spoken in my own country. Even though I know they’re not so very different, akin to British vs Canadian English, but nonetheless that’s what I want to do.

So I’m always on the lookout for new resources, shows with accurate CC captions, etc. I’m already on Mauril, the Par Ici textbooks/workbooks, and watching Telefrançais and Survivor Quebec on TV.

Recently found this ‘talk in Quebecois.com’, and was initially very interested, but I think I see some red flags. They offer a ton of lessons focussed on Quebec French, apparently, but the only way to access them is a one-time payment of $97 USD. That alone struck me as odd- are they an American company?

I got burnt once before previously by ‘Languages 101’ which I took out a one week free trial on, who never replied to my requests to cancel the free trial, and who took couple hundred dollars and I never got it back despite trying to dispute it with the bank. I’m still furious about that. I will NEVER recommend that particular learning website to anyone.

Anyways, I was wondering if anybody had tried this program out.

Another red flag is that on one page they claim that Pimsleur has a Canadian French course module- which they don’t. So, I am wondering if this whole website might just be a bot-written scam.

Starting September 1st, let’s spend 15 minutes per day for 30 days learning or improving our French.

If you already speak some French, improve it. If you haven’t spoken in years, pick it back up. If you’re starting from zero, learn enough to introduce yourself, order a coffee, ask for directions, or have a basic conversation.

Let’s turn what was an attempt to diminish French in Canada into a positive movement. Let’s get more Canadians speaking French than before.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

I also think there’s a bigger point here.

French isn’t just something printed on our cereal boxes or required for certain federal jobs. It’s one of Canada’s two official languages, a huge part of our history and culture, and one of the things that makes this country distinct.

This isn’t about being anti-American or expecting every Canadian to become perfectly bilingual. It’s about making a small effort to better understand another part of our own country — and maybe strengthening something Canadian in the process.

Mauril is CBC’s free French-learning app which was recommended by many in the comments of the original post. It’s a great Canadian replacement for Duolingo. You can also watch French-language TV, take a class, listen to a podcast, practise with a friend, dust off the French you learned in school — whatever works for you.

I've been talking to a girl from Quebec and I'm planning on playing a romantic song for her that I wrote. I would like to sing the final line in French but I don't speak French at all outside of a few things she's taught me here and there.

Can anyone help me translate this line properly and show me phonetically how to say it so I can sing it in the song without it sounding awful?

EDIT: A lot of you are asking for more context. The idea is I get jealous of her tattoos because I want to be on her skin. Also, the word 'draw' is a double meaning as in drawn on her but also I'm drawn to her so I'd like to keep that if possible.

For context:

I come from the West, but have always been interested in learning Canadian French.

Unfortunately, French education in my home provinces was very sub-par, and not many people speak it.

I feel, as a Canadian, it’s important for us to be able to communicate and understand our shared history.

With the recent bad-faith American/Canadian trade talks where the Americans threatened Quebec’s language protection, I’m more motivated than ever to learn Canadian French.

I am writing to ask for any tips, or resources that the community may have to learn Quebecois as an adult.

I had a very rudimentary level in elementary/high-school, and through some dedication I worked myself to a place where I could joke in French with a couple close coworkers, but I have a tough time understanding Quebecois as we were only taught Parisian French.

Is it advisable to continue with Parisian French and “Quebecify” it later, or should I dive straight into Quebecois?

edit: I have a rudimentary base in standard French, and am interested in learning Quebecois specifically because most of my French-speaking coworkers are from Quebec. For example, I have no issue reading 80-90% of the replies to this post. When Quebecers start abbreviating though, with all of the apostrophes, I get lost fast. Especially when spoken.

I’d similarly be interested in learning Acadian if it had a larger footprint. Mais c’est comme ça 😊

Et dire que la CAQ de marde a seulement pris des mesures timides pendant ses huit ans au pouvoir, tabarnak, alors qu'elle avait largement le temps d'en faire beaucoup plus.

Regardez-moi les commentaires. Soudainement, les commentaires sont du genre : « Mais non, le reste du Canada, c’est juste notre grand frère qui nous aime et nous taquine, ahahaha. » Les Québécois sont tellement des NPCs. au cours des derniers mois, j'ai voyage dans les regions francophones du Canada, dans Quebec et dehors de la province. quand je suis au Quebec, je suis toujours surprise par la difference d'approche linguistique, principalemant parce que je suis tellement habituee au bilinguisme officiel (imparfait) des autres provinces. Je suis curieux du point de vue oppose. qu'est-ce qui vous frappe le plus quand vous etes dans une region majoritairement anglophone?

Je viens du sud de l'Ontario et j'ai frequente une ecole francaise pendant plusieurs annees durant mon enfance (je m'excuse encore pour mon francais imparfait, croyez-moi, j'ai honte.). J'ai constate que le français était assez bien représenté dans les publications gouvernementales officielles et sur les produits, mais moins dans les entreprises. Dans mon ecole secondaire anglaise, les seuls eleves qui suivaient des cours de francais pendant les quatre annees etaient soit francais, soit aspiraient a devenir professeurs de francais.
