It's not a new idiom or phrase, it's just not used very often and the meaning has shifted a bit over time. It was originally used by Shakespeare. Calling a period of time your "salad days" meant you were young, inexperienced or "green" and fresh, like a salad. When it's used in modern times, it's used as almost like "the good times."

I've only heard it from older Gen Xers , I think it's an old phrase. But basically means like the evergreen times the times you look back on and think " that was a beautiful moment in time "

It’s “salad days”. It means prosperous times. The joke is that Cal is dumb and says “salad years”. Means the same thing of course but that’s not the actual idiom.

More youthful and carefree than prosperous, and "salad years" is a not really a malapropism.

I understood it based on context but yeah I've never heard that term before. At least I don't remember it, and I think we basically went through Shakespear's entire catalogue in school

"Salad years" is a colloquialism for like, "the good times" or "the times you'll remember," and it's a line delivered in the extended look trailer by one of the characters. It's common enough as a phrase, but probably not ubiquitous throighout generations.
