Announcement A note on scammers, impersonators, and public blacklists

Hey everyone,

I want to address a recent post I removed by u/NotSUPERita about creating a list of trusted artists and scammers, as well as the broader issue of bad actors on r/gamedevclassifieds.

First, I want to apologize to u/NotSUPERita. I understand why you were trying to help, and I do not think the idea came from a bad place. Scammers and impersonators are a real problem here, and it makes sense that people want better ways to protect themselves and others.

That said, I do not think a public or semi-public user-run blacklist is the right solution.

Any single person’s list of “good” and “bad” experiences is subjective. Even with good intentions, lists like that can be abused, misused, or based on misunderstandings. A false accusation could seriously harm an innocent artist, developer, or freelancer’s reputation and business. Once someone is publicly labeled a scammer, that damage is hard to undo.

This applies to moderators too. Even I am subject to bias, incomplete information, and my own interpretation of events. I cannot be judge, jury, and executioner over someone’s professional reputation, and I do not think anyone else should be put in that position either. That is the line I am trying to be careful with.

I know scammers are a problem, and I am aware that this subreddit has been affected by bad actors, impersonators, and people misrepresenting themselves or their work. But I have not yet found a solution that addresses those issues without also creating a serious risk of innocent people getting caught in the mix.

For now, the best advice is still to do your due diligence before working with someone:

  • Verify that their portfolio actually belongs to them
  • Ask for links to established accounts or websites
  • Check whether their email, Discord, ArtStation, GitHub, itch, LinkedIn, or other profiles line up
  • Be cautious with new accounts, vague portfolios, stolen-looking portfolios, or people who avoid verification
  • Use contracts, milestones, and payment methods that offer some protection
  • Do not rely only on someone’s Reddit username or a single message thread

I know that is not a perfect answer. It is a frustrating situation, and I understand why people want something stronger. But asking people to do their homework before hiring or accepting work is better than creating a system where someone’s business can be damaged because they were falsely added to a list.

If there is a better way to handle this that protects people from scammers without turning into public reputation policing or false callouts, I am open to hearing it. Any solution needs to be fair, evidence-based, and careful about the harm it could cause.

Edit: I forgot to add one more important point: any solution also cannot require a heavy amount of moderator time.

Running this job board is not a job. No one on the mod team has the time, or realistically should be expected to have the time, to manually verify users, assign trusted labels, maintain reputation lists, or act as an ongoing approval system for freelancers and clients.

That kind of system would create a lot of work, and it would also create a false sense of safety. Even with moderation, users would still need to verify who they are working with and make their own judgment before hiring, accepting work, or sending payment.

Community-Wide Alert: Do not engage with P1 GAMES (Formerly P1 VIRTUAL CIVILIZATION)

I'm truly getting tired of this nonsense u/RedEagle_MGN

Changing your organizations name doesn't stop people from reaching out to me with horror stories every few months.

DO NOT ENGAGE WITH THESE PEOPLE, no matter what they call themselves. They exploit the inexperienced and naive, convincing you to sign away your rights to everything you create. Don’t fall for their lies. You do not need to join a volunteer group or give up ownership of your work to gain skills in the game industry. Learning on your own is far better than what P1 offers. If you want a real education, seek out accredited programs and courses instead.

Their latest tactic is using LinkedIn ads to lure victims. I’m unsure what it will take to stop this con artist, but I’ll do my part to be a thorn in their side. My goal is to protect people in this community from their schemes.

Spread the word, be safe.

PAID - 2D Art | Animation [Paid] Pixel Art, 48x48, Base Character - Create Remaining Sprites

Thumbnail
gallery
10 Upvotes

Good day!

For my game the base character consists of 5 body parts: lower body, torso, left arm, right arm, head. Theyre all drawn in separate layers. Some body parts have additional swappable poses, such as the sitting pose for the lower body.

The goal ist to create all of the character's animations entirely by moving individual body parts and swapping them out depending on which animation should be played. Many actions, like a waving-emote will be made by hiding the arms and using floating hands which show the desired action by changing their position relative to the character (and less often by rotating).

The only exception where I need an already ready-made animation is the movement animation as it is too specific to be created simply by moving existing parts.

The char is 4 a directional, 48x48 (actually slimmer) male base character. I already have the idle base for all directions. Following sprites are still needed:

- Leaning Forward & Leaning Back pose (torso only)

- Sitting pose (lower body only)

- Fighting Stance (lower body only)

- Movement animation, 4-6 frames (lower body and both arms only)

- One single sprite for each a straight arm & a hand that I can use universally for all directions

As mentioned, all of these are single sprites, not animations, except for the movement animation for the respective body parts.

What I already have is the sitting pose & fighting stance for the side view which only need to be adjusted to match the current art style.

Aside from the sprites and animations it has been common for a few reworks to come up, so please take that into account.

- The only thing that comes to my mind atm is that Im not entirely happy with the head in the front and back view, that Id have to discuss with the artist and get their expert opinion

Disclaimer

Based on past experience im mainly looking for artists who feel confident handling all aspects of the commission. If any aspect of the commission falss outside your current experience please only reach out if youre confident you can work through it independently without weakening the quality of the final result. So far Ive worked with some great artists who did great work in their own style, helped a lot but showed a limited ability/willingness to adapt to the requirements of the commission.

In general Im looking for indie rates but I dont want to comprimise on quality either. I tend to go with my gut on whether an offer feels right to me rather than limit myself to a fixed budget.

Thank you for taking your time! With all the details provieded Id be happy to hear from you with your portfolio and price estimate so we can discuss everything further from there. Also feel free to ask questions if something is not clear or has to be clarified :)

PAID - 2D Art | Animation [PAID] Looking for a Game UI Artist for a dark 1920s FPS roguelite

Hi!

We’re a small indie team looking for a Game UI Artist / UI Designer to help us improve the UI for our upcoming PC game.

It’s a fast-paced FPS roguelite set in an alternate version of the 1920s, with a dark gothic, occult and industrial atmosphere.

We’re currently working on a playable demo. Some of the UI is already working, while other parts are still being developed, so we’re looking for someone who could help us find the right visual style and keep everything consistent across the game.

We really like UI that has a strong atmosphere but is still clean and easy to read. Mortal Shell and Hunt: Showdown are probably the closest examples of the kind of direction we like. We definitely dont want to copy them, but we like how their UI fits naturally into the world and overall atmosphere of the game.

Our game mixes 1920s influences, gothic architecture, occult themes and early industrial design, so aged metal, brass, worn materials, old typography and similar details could work really well.

There would be work on things like the HUD, squad / character selection, menus, character info, buttons, interaction prompts, icons, typography and generally bringing the whole UI together visually.

Experience with PC or console game UI would be a big plus.

We’re based in Europe, but working remotely from anywhere is totally fine.

We dont have a fixed budget set yet, as it will depend on the amount of UI work and how much we end up doing together. We’re happy to discuss rates based on the scope of the work and your experience.

If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, feel free to send me a DM with your portfolio, some game UI examples, your rates and availability.

We can send screenshots, gameplay footage and more details about the game privately.

Thanks!

FOR HIRE - Musician [For Hire] Rock and metal musician at your service!

Let's cut to the chase. You want badass music for your game? I got you.

I'm a musician and have worked on several small projects. I was on Team First Try where we published a few game jam games. And I've made the soundtrack for Oh My Lord, which was fully published on Steam.

I've been a diehard metalhead all of my life, and videogames have absolutely been a pillar of that. If you're looking for your game to have a soundtrack in the style of Sonic The Hedgehog, Doom, or even something like the Persona games or Undertale, that's my bread and butter. I'm mainly influenced by classic metal and progressive rock.

As far as experience goes, I've worked on several teams and have experience as a project leader when it comes to music. Direction, production, writing, performing.

Here's the breakdown of what I can play, what I own and what you are getting when you hire me.

- Electric guitar (10 years experience. Main guitar is a PRS SE Custom 24, I use a Squire Stratocaster as well)
- Keyboard/Piano (6 years experience. Keyboard is an M-AUDIO Keystation 61 MK3)
- Acoustic Guitar (6 years experience. Guitar is a Fender Dreadnaught)
- Bass (6 years experience. Main bass is an Ibanez SR370RE Fretless)

I work with Cubase Pro for my DAW

Now, rock and metal is not all I can do. I have made quite a lot of orchestral music. In fact when it comes to experience in making music for videogames, orchestral is the bulk of what I have done. So if you're looking for something a little more like Final Fantasy or Xenoblade, I can absolutely do that as well.

Here is my portfolio, it has a great variety of styles, so I'll point you to whichever you are most interested in

For rock and metal, see: Drive, Echo, Crushing Tides

For orchestral, see: Warning, Force of Nature, Final Battle, Sunset

For jazz(ish), see: Dancing Cinders

For ballad/ethereal, see: Fairy Lights, Beautiful Heartbreak

Hope you enjoy, and hope to talk soon!

PAID - Musician [PAID] Solo developer. Looking for a couple of music tracks for a visual novel

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,

I've been working on this visual novel for a little while now, and it's getting close to completion.

Truthfully, this started as a hobby project to help me through a tough time, but I've become attached to the piece of art I've created, and, well, I just want some BGMs that would be suitable for the work.

To give you an idea, the screenshots I have provided are, 98% of the time, the artwork and style you're going to see.

A quick synopsis of the game would be: you've woken up in a place unknown to you with eight other individuals, and you must clear all five sectors to escape. However, it's quite clear this won't be a simple measure.

I'm not musically versed, so my description is going to be a little limited and janky. But essentially, I want some simple BGMs that convey the thought of despair, horror, a little bit of hope, but then that's rug-pulled from you. I definitely prefer the types of songs that loop when you're reading through the story.

I believe 45-90 seconds is more than enough for each song. Regarding the price, I would like to agree on it privately. Please PM me if you're interested in this. A portfolio of your previous work, especially anything you believe that would fit into this game, is appreciated.

PAID - Writer | Voice Actor [PAID] Female Singer Role for dark fantasy visual novel "The Duke Wilhausen"

“The Duke Wilhausen” team is looking for our final voice role: a female singer for the Chorus sections, as the nymphs! We are grateful for the unexpected turnout for VA auditions: over 800! We’re so thankful that this project resonated with so many of you. Thank you for sharing your voices.

We are now looking for a female singer for sections in the Chorus of the poem that are set to music. During the narrative, the four nymph sisters will sing short interludes about the events going on in the text. Rather than having four different singers harmonizing for these songs, we will have one female lead sing all the parts, representing the nymphs.

All role details on Casting Call Club page: https://www.castingcall.club/projects/the-duke-wilhausen-visual-novel-project

Vocal Range

  • Soprano, with a range of A#5 - A#6
  • Soprano, with a range of C#5 - D#6
  • Mezzo, with a range of A#4 - A#5
  • Contralto, with a range of A#3 - C#5
  • The total length of all of the finished songs will be around 15 minutes, though some voices (such as the Contralto) will have much less.

Voice Style:

  • The vocalist should have a clear, feminine voice, with the ability to harmonize with themselves or another vocalist. The vocalist should also be able to clearly enunciate the lyrics, and pronounce unusual words and names as directed (no "cursive singing", for example).
  • The ideal singers would not have an overly raspy or twangy voice, but if this is something you want to audition for, I implore you to audition even if you don't exactly fit all the parameters laid out; these are guidelines instead of hard and fast rules, and all vocalists will be earnestly considered.

Audition Material

Since this is a role that compliments voice acting, vocalists will be chosen based on suitability for the songs and parity with the chosen VAs. Manipulation of the final recordings (for example, equalization, noise removal, pitch correction, addition of effects like reverb, etc.) should be expected.

Follow The Duke on social media for casting updates.

PAID - 3D Modeler | Animation [PAID] Freelance 3D artist — characters/creatures/environments for a body-horror roguelike (remote, per-asset, work in Unreal/Unity/Blender)

Two-person team (programmer + game designer), shipping a side-scrolling body-horror roguelike on Steam in early 2027. Godot 4 + C#. The gameplay build is real and the project is four weeks old — 90-second demo: https://youtu.be/pumPCGatK2U — and everything visible in it is placeholder kit art, which is the problem you'd be solving.

The work, in priority order:

  1. Player mutation forms — a base humanoid plus part-by-part transformed variants (blade arms, restructured legs) on a fixed rig
  2. Creatures/enemies
  3. Lab/facility environment kits and overall visual direction

Compensation: starts with a $200 trial piece (one creature or one mutation set, scoped together, real deadline). Continues per-asset at rates we agree per piece — small indie budget, stated honestly up front, not a bait-and-switch. For an artist who wants a stake in the project long-term there's a revenue-share component on top, but the working arrangement is paid freelance per asset.

Practical details: remote, async-friendly, and you never have to touch Godot. The game runs on it, but the pipeline is built so you author in Unreal, Unity, or Blender — whichever you already work in — and conversion into the game is scripted and handled by us. You deliver art in your own tools, we make it run. Style target is schlocky B-movie body horror: gory, readable, deliberately pulpy.

About us: https://protoforgesystems.com · https://www.linkedin.com/in/cmcginnis/ · https://github.com/ProtoForgeSystems

DM with a portfolio of game-ready work (in-engine beats renders) and your per-asset rate range.
