Discussion On the "Slop" Discourse

A lot of showcase posts these days are getting the "slop" label in the comments.

Sometimes it's AI. Sometimes it's UE. Sometimes it's mythology.

It's been previously mentioned that this community is not interested in how people make their games, which includes using AI or UE. And if it wasn't understood by default for developers, it probably deserves explicit mention: We are not interested in favoring genres either.

As developers, it is our duty to set the bar not just in quality, but also in feedback to fellow creators. Labelling things as "slop" without contributing anything constructive is not helping anyone.

If it's a low-effort AI post, instead of just saying "AI slop", it is more meaningful to mention that the game appears bland and generic.

If it's a UE asset-flip, mention that the gameplay is more important than the art for serious projects.

If it's a mythology game, please assess the game on its own merits instead of dismissing it outright.

To be clear, this is not an invitation to post low-quality content. But at the same time, writing rude comments is just as much against the community rules. So please, be mindful of what you post, because there is an actual human being on the other side of the screen.

Cheers.

About AI

Hey, quick update to the rules:

This subreddit is neither pro nor anti AI. That means, if your post uses AI, it will not be removed. However, quality controls still apply. If it's an extremely low effort post, AI or not, it will be removed.

And more often than not, bad quality posts will be downvoted anyway, so please keep that part in mind.

As for the vocal anti-AI folks here: it is a technology that is here to stay. If nothing else, programmers will use AI to generate code snippets from time to time. I cannot and will not police tool-use that aids game development. It is up to you if you want to use it in your games or not, but this community is not interested in telling people how to make their games.

EDIT: Criticism is accepted. But name calling and personal insults will be removed.

Just opened a Discord for KO-KHO-GO ! Its very new (as in, you may genuinely be one of the first people there 😅 ), but I’d love for it to become a place where I can share development more casually, talk about the world and characters, get feedback and ideas and talk a lot about game design ,art and India. Lets have some fun together!

(PS: About the short gameplay footage ..yeah those black bars are part of the game (not those stickers though)... i just wanted that unique and cinematic feel and i love it . please let me know what you think ! )

Please find the discord link in a comment below ,my profile as i cannot post it in the post body as per rules.

Which capsule opening mechanism looks better 1 or 2?

We’re working on the capsule design for our co-op sci-fi horror game and can’t decide which opening/closing style feels better.

Which one would you choose: 1 or 2?

We’re mainly considering how readable and satisfying it will feel during the opening/closing animation.

Any feedback is appreciated!

If you’d like to support our small indie team, you can also wishlist The Infected Soul on Steam. It genuinely helps us a lot.

Our game without and with post processing

These aren't final and quite clearly the biggest difference (in this level) is the volumetric lights!

From the beginning we tried to get ~80% of our results from lighting only and added the effects later.

Our cutscenes (I will post later) have similar effects but with more bloom and depth of field to give it a more cinematic look. It also has some color grading to get a "Y2K" feel

Done on Unity 6.1 URP. Performance wise, we're optimizing it to get to work on a 2013 GTX 770 laptop that we have at home. If it runs on that, we're _more_ than happy!

Our game is called SHOCKFACE. We're on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4705980/SHOCKFACE/

PS: We recently missed our 27th Aug planned release. So we took the opportunity to polish the game further and maybe market it a little more. If this looks like your jam check it out!

Made a free music pack — 20 tracks, 9 genres, use it however you want

I write royalty-free music for a living, and I put together a pack of 20 tracks to give away. Nine different genres in there — action cinematic, sci-fi, orchestral, hard rock, techno, retro chiptune, casual and acoustic. Figured a spread was more useful than twenty variations on the same thing.

WAV and OGG, most of them with looping versions so you can drop them straight in. Use them in whatever you're making — game, video, stream, doesn't matter. Commercial is fine. No credit needed, no signup, no email.

https://andrewsitkov.itch.io/free-music-starter-pack-for-games-video-streams

If you end up liking the music, these 20 came out of a bigger collection of mine that's bundled on Humble right now — 48 packs, 591 tracks. But that's entirely optional, the free pack is just yours.

Is Your Unity Project Actually Optimized? I Built a Tool to Find Out | Smart Project Optimizer| Released 50% OFF

Thumbnail

Hey Unity Devs!

I’ve recently released Smart Project Optimizer, a Unity editor tool I originally built to make it easier to find the little things that slowly make a project heavier and harder to maintain.

Based On Unity’s Official Optimization Guide.

It scans your project for things like heavy/unoptimized textures, expensive code patterns, rendering issues, memory usage, unused assets, missing scripts, build settings, physics, animation, and more.

The idea is pretty simple: instead of manually going through hundreds or thousands of assets trying to figure out what could be improved, you get a project health score and a categorized list of issues, along with recommendations and safe one-click fixes where possible.

I also added Quick Wins, so you can quickly apply common safe optimizations without digging through the project yourself.

It can be useful whether you’re working on a small prototype or a large project that has accumulated a lot of assets over time.

It’s currently 50% off for the launch if anyone wants to give it a try.

Would love to hear what you think, especially if there are other optimization checks you’d like to see added!

Tiling lost his third eye. His replacement plan is… questionable !

Sharing Concept Art of one of the many characters that populate the strange and wonderful world of Ko-Kho-Go.
Once known as the Three-Eyed Guardian, 'Tiling' (tee- ling) can now be found keeping watch near Harong Than (aka The Shrine of Harong).
Approach him politely, and he might ask you for a small favour .. find him a ghungroo bell. You see, Tiling has lost his third eye… and he has a rather unusual plan for replacing it !

TwoFold - I built a daily word game where the clues are images!

Each day has 5 illustrated pairs. Each pair shows two words that are

exactly one letter apart (e.g. PEAR → PEA). Find the extra letter from

each pair, and use all 5 letters to spell the day's word.

Solo project, would love any feedback, especially around the mechanic or the difficulty level.

Play: https://www.playtwofold.com/

The pair above is just a sample, so today's puzzle is completely fresh.

Missed the IGDC 2026's Indie 60 deadline today, but maybe it’s time I finally start sharing my game Ko-Kho-Go

Post image
110 Upvotes

Today was the last day to apply for Indie 60 at IGDC. I, a solo indie developer ,wanted to submit Ko-Kho-Go, but a playable build is mandatory and mine just isn't there yet in terms of proper polished ux flow and ui. the project have enough to experience the mechanics and the world, but not something I'd be comfortable putting right now in front of a panel as a standalone build.

Heartbreaking, but it also made me realise I've spent way too long keeping my projects to myself, waiting for everything to be "ready" and polished enough before showing anyone. Working alone on everything is tiresome and after months of working and exploring on multiple projects without any fulltime job support or funding, i have ended up with some good projects i am really proud of , one of which is Ko-Kho-Go which have levels that are playable with good working mechanics and well crafted art and i am planning to create a quick teaser/trailer of it with some good gameplay footage or even short snippets that i would like to share next in few days. I figured today's the right time to not sulk and to start atleast with a small cover art as i dont want to be too late .

Ko-Kho-Go is a 2D platform adventure game set in an imaginary world with a whimsical look inspired by rural life, folklore, strange local legends, everyday absurdities and stories that sit somewhere between the familiar and the mythical , with a little grounded reality mixed in as well. I’ve always loved folklore and storytelling, and this is my attempt to build a world around those influences . i promise it will be a fun platformer!

Would love to hear your first impressions on this promotional cover art. (PS: Strictly no AI as art was my bread and butter once and i want to showcase my art style)
