"It was part of our art direction to make sure majority of our players won't see it."
Even if we discard all the AI slop accusations, one simple fact remains - this is a proprietary technology that only works on latest GPUs from one corporation. Which means their precious art direction will not be seen by all the console players and all the non-green team players.
And then we can talk about it dragging games down to averaged out norm of "it looks like generic UE realismslop" and yassified faces, and faked photo studio lighting on every character and every other aspect that comes with applying AI filter over the game.

"we can set the overall tone and style to match our existing art direction."
Just lol. Really funny video.

Why's that funny?

Because it’s based on real life mimicking real human people - there is not an art style none of these assets are created by them, they are reproductions of existing things

Wouldn't that just mean their art direction is photo-realism? That's still an art style.

It is, but Redditors are going to move the goal post in their "DLSS5 ignores artist intent" debate because of its heavy use of AI. A developer can make a video or post saying how they're going to use it to further enhance their game and a vocal section of the internet will tell them they're wrong.
That's okay, though, doesn't change anything. Let's see how much I get downvoted for saying this

Is the mona lisa not painted in an art style? That's mimicking a real human.

Mona Lisa was painted by hand. If you guys didn’t have bad faith arguments you’d have no arguments at all.

I mean at least I can stick to ONE argument. You started by saying that mimicking real life isn't an art direction and now the argument is that it doesn't count because it's not made my a real human. So does that mean you agree that it CAN BE an art direction?

This is my first comment here, you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about.

I just cannot get on board with this. Enhancing the lighting via AI or whatever is one thing. But to have it physically change the art the devs make just feels a step too far. I don't like it.

the art in this case is just photoscans of real people though

That thing literally changes the textures and lighting from scene to scene. From skintone to everything none of em are consistent lol.

it's consistent enough that people have gotten it to work in VR already which requires rendering two slightly different versions of the same image in exactly the same way.

I'm sure it is fine tuned though. I cannot imagine it's a simple copy paste. There is surely still artistic envision involved.

u/OptimusGrimes 19h ago
yea, but what I mean is that everything the artist does is to try to realise an as photorealistic output as possible, they aren't necessarily going to be taking artistic freedom in the case of an NBA game.
I'm not trying to argue that DLSS 5 is great, I won't be using it but I feel like a photorealistic sports game is about as good a use case as you're going to get.
The Assetto Corsa demo looks pretty impressive.

Art within the gaming industry died as soon as it become profit driven by greedy companies, its corporate slop now and has been for some time.

The exact same settings give different results on the exact same scene if you just turn them off and back on again
There is just objectively no way this tech can have any artistic vision, cause it's simply far too inconsistent for that.

Why is this post being downvoted even if you hate the technology don't you at least want to understand it so your hate can be more informed?
