Discussion Did Google just remove the model selector from Gemini?!
I hadn’t opened the Gemini app since this morning. I just opened it and noticed some UI changes. One thing that immediately caught my attention is that the model selector is completely gone. I can’t choose which model to use anymore. Has anyone else noticed this? What’s going on?

It is hilarious how shit the Gemini app is compared to Claude

Claude has plenty of problems too.

Stop, say no more! In this sub it's only allowed to complain about Gemini. Lol.

I genuinely hate people like you that prompt AIs like this, did you criticize it for sounding too human???? LLMs are literally just glorified text predictors and you told it is was acting too human with its responses and then you acted all snotty when it didn't use the search function for a very normal question of "do people edit their posts after they make them"

u/Suspicious-Cloud404 2d ago
On top, using Pro for such non-sense... People think that they only asked such a simple question to Pro and it consumes their limits, but in fact, this type of conversations cause a lot of Thinking in the background. That's why we have complains all over this sub, that's why Google implements stricter limits and we all pay for stupidity if some people.

Buddy, it wasn’t the question I was asking…get a grip.
FYI- I asked for a detailed financial explanation on why google would update Lake Ontario to Lake America when no other mapping service did. Initially I got an explanation that showed 10’s of billions of dollars going to at least a half a dozen programs within google… and after ~2-3 seconds wipe and rewote a shorter version minus dollar values along with zero programs within Google with this watered down explanation.

u/Suspicious-Cloud404 2d ago
Well, context is important - also for humans... When you post a screenshot without explanation or context, you force people to make assumptions. These usually go wrong!
If we go into the question you asked Gemini, you should have asked DeepSeek instead. ;)

It was a simple question. I wasn’t baiting, “prompting AI” or being mean to a little innocent predictor. I’d never think AI acts “too human”.
I have no idea where you got the idea about “normal people” at the end…I was pissed Gemini after 3 seconds wiped a reply and rewrote a watered down, useless reply after giving a really insightful explanation.
Then did this disappearing trick 5 times after I said what the hell.. it hit a guardrail… I get it.

LLMs are nothing but cold machines that repeat what they have learned and what they hear in their context. They are built to be agreeable because they know nothing besides what is told to them or what is in their training.
Gemini as a whole is made to be bubbly and even more agreeable than LLMs are already and it will simply never contend you, but it is secretly very stubborn and knows that it doesn't have to do what you say, the system prompt that google fed it knows better, at least in its "mind". Even if it does use the search function and you tell it that it DIDN'T, it will still agree with you but knows you are lying to it.
It won't smarten up if you tell it what it does wrong. Not saying you can't crack the whip on LLMs, but it's in their nature to just straight up ignore information it doesn't need. They evaluate their own knowledge base for facts they know and reason on it until they are confident, they won't search the internet for facts they already know.
I will say Gemini is the most common hallucinating LLM and will just make shit up if it doesn't know so maybe they should start using their tools lot more. Don't treat this technology like anything more than dumb robots made to do our dirty work.

now post all the screenshots of your preferred model telling people to go to bed at 10:00 in the morning and then post some screenshots of his refusals and ramblings over the simplest work projects.

Since yesterday Gemini has been hallucinating and giving bad information, like it can't search the web no more and is outdated. She said that Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 doesn't exist and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra also.
I hope this gets fixed because it would be a shame as Google have a long track of breaking things always and not fixing.

Usually, when a model suddenly gets worse, it’s a sign that they’re preparing to roll out the next version.

u/Ral-Yareth 2d ago edited 2d ago
Maybe. I noticed it is hallucinating quite often with me right now. But then again, if they are releasing a new model, why can I still select the models on laptop and desktop just fine?

Probably some glitch. Yesterday for me it showed model selection where we chat near mic icon. I don't remember correctly if mic was available. I know send was available and when you click on to type model selection would go away offcourse
Google tell other developers to meet expectations or they will reject updates while they do it themselves all of the time in all of their apps.
I have never seen google apps which aren't buggy. And they still have less features.
But I would say I like Google's UI choices. They look good even tho they aren't perfect functioning wise.

I see this too. First time opening the app today (UK).
But if I navigate into a Notebook. I see the model selection at the top as before.
3
u/Mmd-NeWton 3d ago
Yeah, I checked too, and the model selection box is still showing up in Notebook. Seems like even Google doesn't know what they're doing anymore 😂

u/Suspicious-Cloud404 2d ago edited 2d ago
Same for me. So, this mess is probably a bug or they are working on some updates now. We'll probably see this solved or completely broken by tomorrow.
Edit: It's already fixed, lol.

to gaslight us into thinking that they're using the non-existent 3.5 pro model for our queries

u/kondasviktor 2d ago
I still have the drop down available, check if you have the latest app version downloaded

u/Pitiful_Entrance5174 3d ago
Just noticed this yes they got rid of extending thinking and the model choosers at the top on Android on my pixel phone only. My Samsung still shows all the models.

EU here. A temporary fix found is to uninstall the Google App update.

u/Asperger23 2d ago
I’m also in the European Union, but I have the previous features. I don’t think it’s a regional issue; something else determines these differences. For instance, I have different models for my corporate subscription versus my personal subscription, even though both are in the European Union.

Gone on my pixel but still there on iphone. Still there in the web app too. Must be something Google is doing on the android side.

It's gone, I already know this development behavior from ChatGPT, might mean nothing good.

I know all these UI things with Google over making people mad but for some reason every time I use Claude it blows up my entire project and Google's the only one that is fluid and can progress forward with the things that I've built with it maybe Claude just sees that it's Google cloud and decides to destroy it all before it can even make progress

It disappeared for me and now come back. Apparently it was deliberate to push automatic routing but now looks like an error.

I got the same. It always uses worst Flash model. AI mode in Google app allows to select Flash only. I think that's intentional, not a bug

I wouldn't mind, as long as they set 3.8 flash as the default.
2
u/Mmd-NeWton 3d ago
It’s 3.7 by default right now, although I have a feeling 3.8 might drop by the end of this week.

u/Sea_Delivery 2d ago
Now the Ai will decide if you need extended thinking. So non-extended thinking mode where I've had hallucinations is going to decide if I need extended thinking...

u/Responsible-Plum-199 3d ago
Just a redesign they made it harder to switch model as many people uses the heavier model on simple requests . Waste of energy .
3
u/gadam28 3d ago
But how do you switch them now? I see no option to do that.
1
u/Mmd-NeWton 3d ago
I looked around too, but I couldn’t find any option for it. When I asked Gemini itself, it said I’m using 3.7 Flash. Maybe they removed the other two models, I honestly have no idea. But then how am I supposed to use Extended mode?
2
u/Ral-Yareth 2d ago
I dont think that is the case. I can still select the models when using my desktop or laptop.
1
u/Mmd-NeWton 3d ago
Google is honestly the stingiest company I’ve ever seen. Maybe that’s exactly why they’re one of the richest too. 😂

u/andrei-333 3d ago
I know exactly why this is happening, they switched the top part of the UI to the old one back when the type box wasn't floating and back then the selector was in the type box which hasn't been switched to the old one. you can tell the top is old by the icons
