What’s your story with this autumnal record? When did you first hear/purchase? Favourite track?

I'm in a local bar, has a cocktail, soulful kind of vibe. Playlists consist of funky jazzy type generico. Phil Collins comes on, I ask them if they like Phil, they say they love him. I ask if they like his work with Genesis, they tell me they haven't heard any.

I ask them to put on a track called 'Old Medley' (no point in messing around) They listen captivated, as Phil sings the Lamb. By the time it approaches Daryl's long guitar solo, their minds are blown. During a keyboard section for Firth of Fifth, one of them exclaims "Oh wow it sounds like Mario Cart music!".

I don’t know if this is because I downloaded the album for offline play, or if they coincidentally uploaded the song to the album but it’s there now. Just noticed today.

I’m a huge fan of Genesis but also of Rush. Reading this interview helps me understand why.

“Well I was a big fan of Genesis and Peter Gabriel. That was when I first discovered the notion of a ‘concept’ and that it could be an adventurous and lively place and not dull at all. It is a very playful and compelling record. I fell in love with the sound of it. I was totally entranced by it and wanted to know how they had done it. This is part of the roots of Rush. The creation of a flexible concept. The parallels are obvious”

During a conversation with Classic Rock magazine back in 2012, Geddy Lee recalled that when he was young he went to see Genesis play as Lou Reed's opening act. However, he only saw the Progressive Rock band and decided to go home earlier: “Yes. I went to see a strange double bill. Genesis was opening for Lou Reed. It was Genesis first time in Toronto. They started with ‘Watcher of Skies’ and they were great.”

In an interview with Guitar World back in 2009, Geddy Lee listed Genesis’ “Watcher Of The Skies” from the 1972 album “Foxtrot” was one of the songs that shaped’s the sound of Rush. “The time signature was completely odd. It was a little like Yes, but darker and much more theatrical.”

“They had beautiful moments, complex moments, Peter Gabriel‘s voice in the sense of showmanship. I remember when they came to Toronto to play the first time. They were opening for Lou Reed if you can believe that.”

My cousin bought a copy like this many many years ago. Now, I recently found and bought another one with this same typographical error. I tried to find some info about it but nothing, anyone has the same copy too?

I found this poster tucked inside a Japanese import of Duke I ordered on eBay. It has no logo, no serial number or other identifying info. Against my better judgement, I hung it up. I can’t find anything online about these mysterious purple pyramids.

Anyone else notice this?? This is blasphemy! They pulled my favorite song from the whole album.

Just getting into their earlier records and I can’t believe it’s the same band who made a hit just off the silly drum samples no one used. I love their pop stuff but how did they do it?? Did they secretly work with cowriters? Writing something like I Can’t Dance is just a completely different mentality than Supper’s Ready

One thing I have trouble understanding about Genesis in the 1970s is getting a gauge of how popular they were. At least in the U.S where I am (I am not really familiar with record charts in other countries), they didn't start to have significant chart success until the 1980s, and they only had two songs that charted on the Billboard Hot 100 in that decade (Your Own Special Way at #62 and Follow You Follow Me at #23). This doesn't look like the mark of a band that was all too popular with the public. Yet my understanding, at least from what I can gather, is that Peter Gabriel leaving Genesis was huge news within the music industry.

So how well known was Genesis in the 1970s among the general public? Were they a popular band that just didn't have that much chart success, or were they something like Metric which is relatively obscure to the general public, but within their particular scene/subculture they were huge? So for those of you who were there, how popular was Genesis in the 1970s? I would be particularly interested to hear from an American perspective, since that is where I am, and I get the feeling it might differ from elsewhere.

This popped up on my Spotify list and I wasn’t aware that Phil narrated his own biography. Been listening to it and it’s actually quite good. A bit light on the Genesis years, but it’s still worth a listen.
