Game Discussion Do you always default to the female options when the game has different characters to choose from?
Given the choice, in a character creator, I will almost always go female. It just helps me immerse myself into the game easier. It’s just more natural for me to project myself so to speak on a character that at least vaguely resembles me. After I’m done with my first playthrough, if I'm playing more I usually roll a male to see if the game is any different like that, especially if there are romance options.
There is an exception though. When a game uses gender locked classes, like some MMOs and ARPGs do, I don’t really care about immersion and I choose whatever playstyle seems the most fun. I’ve always been mostly focused on gameplay so choosing a class based on how the character looks is just not something I would do.
Obviously the best case scenario is when the class I want to play is a female character anyway. This is the case in Last Epoch for example, where my favorite is the Rogue and that one is female along with the Acolyte (Necro basically). I am completely fine with this system btw, as long as the female classes are as badass as the male ones. In Diablo 4 they let you pick male or female for any class, which oddly feels kinda bad for me, I always loved the fact that my favorite classes in D2 were gender locked to female (Sorceress and Assassin)
I feel like it's fine for developers to not let you pick all the time. Because sometimes the story of a character only makes sense from one perspective. But in games that give you a lot of choices when it comes to character creation things should be at least somewhat fair, I hate it when all the female characters are some type of support or healer archetype.
I’d like to hear what you think about this. Do you ever pick the male option when you create your character? And what is your feeling on gender locked characters?

Misogyny I dislike the framing of “The Lucia Relationship Controversy” Spoiler
I am posting here because I figure that it’s a safe space to not get flamed by angry men who won’t engage with the conversation in good faith. But I was just thinking about this after being inundated with articles about Lucia from GTA VI causing “relationship issues” in couples where the woman in the relationship has a problem with their male partner playing GTA VI after finding out that Jason, the male MC, can take her out on dates, have sex with her, and in general just have a full on, hyper-realistic relationship with her (I’m aware she is also a playable protagonist as well.) Also just to clarify, I don’t hate GTA or anything. I will probably give GTA VI a go myself because I think it’s cool we will get to play as a woman (even though I don’t like how she’s being marketed or treated already.) I also don’t think actually being “jealous” of a video game character is rational, but read on because I think there’s more to this.
But anyways, of course the automatic, rage bait reaction from most people, including a lot of other women, jumps right to “Haha look at all these stupid and crazy women jealous of pixels. So irrational.” But here’s the thing I haven’t seen a lot of other people say:
I don’t think this is just about actual jealousy of a game character at all.
Hear me out. But I think what we are really seeing is a number of women being forced to confront the fact that their boyfriends are, and have been misogynistic, emotionally unavailable, and arguably porn brain-rotted. Because let’s think about it. Based off of what I’ve seen of videos of women expressing their discomfort, all of seem to be aware of what GTA contains because their partners have been playing GTA V for like the last decade. In GTA V, the male characters cannot really have a girlfriend/relationship like with Lucia. The dating is not nearly as comprehensive as what’s planned for GTA VI. Pretty much all of the women associated with the male MCs in GTA V in-game are sex workers that are treated as disposable objects. These women were clearly not bothered by their male partners playing this game where they can solicit these women, rob them, or kill them. It didn’t concern them that their partner took so much enjoyment in doing these things to these women in a game and would be ogling them. After all, they are “only disposable sex workers,” so who cares how their boyfriend views them? He doesn’t view all women like that, right?
But, now that we have a fully realized female protagonist that the player can engage with, you can see that their feelings suddenly changed. They are noticing that their partner is still viewing and treating her just like he did to the virtual women in GTA V. Except this time, it feels different because Lucia feels closer to home. She’s a girlfriend and not just some stripper. So now they are actually concerned about how their boyfriend talks about and engages with this video game woman. It never occurred to them that he hasn’t respected women this entire time. Not to mention that a lot of them seem to be concerned with their BFs giving “more time” to this virtual woman in a game. That tells me that their partners likely aren’t fulfilling their emotional needs in real life because that’s not something anyone in a healthy relationship would actually be concerned about.
So yeah I just do not like how this is being framed as crazy women jealous over a character. I’ve actually seen that behavior before, funny enough, usually from men with their GFs playing games! But this situation reads to me more as women having to face the reality that the men they’ve been with have been porn brained misogynists who don’t fulfill their needs this whole time. It just didn’t matter to them before.
Thoughts? I’m wondering what everyone else has been seeing and thinking.

Game Discussion Do you take time off work around the game release dates so you can enjoy them?
So both me and my partner occasionally tend to book time off if a game one of us was waiting for comes out. I think the last time i did it was for mass effect legendary edition and the last time my partner did that was around the time metal gear solid 3 remake release window. A few people i know also tend to book time off when a game they like or big dlc comes out.
However it has happened on a couple of occasions when time off for game releases gets mentioned other gamers feel it is a bit too much to be taking off and I am curious about others opinions.

Game Discussion Games I wish would get a remake
-Rules of rose -> very good story and characters, the graphics for the cinematic are very great for the year it came out and I really like the graphics overall, the music are great and the art is so good I want to see it in 4k, but gameplay is horrible lot of frustration especially during the first boss fight of the games so it would be a very good thing if a remake came out and the gameplay would be better
-Haunting Ground -> again very good story and characters, art is wonderful what I love the most in this game is the ambience, it make me so uncomfortable ( in a good way ) maybe it would this uneasy ambience with a remake but I really want to see it in 4k, the gameplay is fine but it could have so much things added for the stalkers
-Fatal Frame 3 and 1 -> Fatal frame has 2 remakes, fatal frame 4 was remastered and fatal frame 5 had a portage WHERE ARE 3 AND 1 ?!?! Fatal frame1 already have a remake but UNFORTUNATELY it’s locked in a pachinko machine in Japan only and 3 ? 3 is missing :,( and I will not talk about spirit camera it is unfortunately unplayable without the 3DS and I think that it doesn’t need a remake ( but I still dream about it )
-The Last story -> maybe not a big remake but I really wish we could have it on switch it was one of my favourite game on Wii and everything about this game is beautiful, it literally make what my artstyle is today because I was obsessed with the art of this game back then ( still is )
-Parasite Eve 1/2, The 3 rd Birthday -> I didn’t played the parasite Eve but when I was little I had a cousin who had a psp and with the 3 rd Birthay, he would let me play on it sometimes, I never finished it unfortunately, I think that I will play the 3 games on emulator soon but i wish I could see a remake came out one day
-Silent Hill 3/4 -> Silent Hill 2 remake was fantastic, I can’t wait for the remake of the first one and I hope it goes in this way and we can have Silent hill 3 and 4 too
-Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holly war -> it’s the next in lines for a remake in fire emblem series and it’s my favourite one
I think that I have a lot of other games I want but these are the first one that come in my mind when I think of a remake

Game Discussion What is it about Resident Evil characters?
I don’t know where else to ask but this has been always bothering me lol.
We know the character design aims at making them Americans but both the names and the looks are delightfully “this is an American if I was a Japanese designer”.
More to a point, most of the characters have Caucasian features but there’s something about them that instantly makes you know the studio is Japanese.
Can someone point me to what exactly gives off this vibe? I can never place it. Like, obviously, they’re all super handsome or beautiful, which is a staple for Japanese games, but there’s something about their faces that just screams “this is a Caucasian person made by a Japanese person”.

Game Discussion Does anyone else get annoyed when people say "bro thinks"
There is the part about assuming someone's gender as male by default, and we've already had this conversation, so I'm not trying to revive it.
I'm talking about something slightly different: when someone gives a bad take, and people reply referring to that person in third person as "bro," such as "bro thinks we're still in 2015" or "bro is just salty about losing."
I think this phrasing is supposed to make the comment funnier by being more condescending, although I'm not quite sure how it achieves this effect.
Maybe it establishes that you're not talking TO them but ABOUT them, as though you don't think it's worth actually talking to them, and you're just laughing at them with others within earshot.
But this language always feels very gamer bro-y and mean-spirited, especially when referring to someone who has less experience with a game and doesn't know any better.
Anyone else feels this way? Please tell me I'm not the only one!

Request Looking for a specific atmosphere of a dying world
Hi everyone, I’m looking for games with a specific kind of atmosphere. I’m after games where the world and society exude collective grief, a longing for the past, nostalgia, and a sense of irretrievable loss—whether due to dystopia, an apocalyptic event or other fantastical elements.
A world that is no more, where we—as the player—traverse the remnants. Style and genre don't matter!
Examples include:
-The Long Dark
-We Happy Few
-Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture
-Expedition 33
-Tainted Grail
-Paradise Killer
I’d prefer to avoid the big AAA titles and lean towards story-driven indie games, but I’m open to anything!
TL;DR: Atmosphere of lost worlds, longing for what was, nostalgia and grief.
(Picture for engagement, game is harold halibut)

Game Discussion South of Midnight
Just seeing if anyone has played & finished this game. Is it worth pushing to the end for the story?
I got to chapter 8. I am very interested in the story, art, and music. Really beautiful. BUT the gameplay, especially the fighting, is so repetitive & getting a bit boring.

Game Discussion Recommend me games
I'm looking to broaden my library.
Few details on what i like
Main platform is PC
I highly prefer games where a female character is the main, optional, or even moddable
I've been recently playing and enjoying Avowed, Mortal Shell 2, Lords of the Fallen (2023), Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, Stellar Blade.
Historically, I've enjoyed dragon quest, pokemon, and various other titles (a couple niche ones like dark cloud and rogue galaxy, so if you have anything like those, I'd be greatly appreciative, as those are childhood favorites)

Request Please help me find my next playthrough!
I need a game that will hook me from the start and keep me interested please! Preferably playable on steam deck but I also have a switch and xbox.
My ideal games are story driven, open world RPGs with romance but I am open to all suggestions!
I love open world exploration with a lot find and do. I love to get lost exploring but I’m happy to play non open world games if they have a great story like The Last of Us.

Game Discussion On The Topic Of Remakes
So I have some opinions about remakes. I'm gonna preface this with yes, I am fine with remakes existing.
my issue stems from people, even devs, treating remakes like replacements. remakes are inherently different experiences. while they can be good experiences, I think the idea that a piece of art can be replaced with a newer version is an ignorant one. yes, many older games are flawed and have some dated aspects, those flaws and dated aspects are part of a game's identity. art is human. art can be weird, messy, unconventional. just like us. to me, trying to remake a game to remove its flaws strips it of its identity and instead creates a wholly new one.
that new identity can be good, too. but it's NOT the original, and if a remake of a game comes out, I'd say make sure the original is available too.
sorry if this post comes off too whiny, it's just a topic that's been on my mind alot recently, and I wanted to get my feelings out.

Game Discussion What is a 'cozy game' to you?
I don't know how widely held this opinion is, but for me, games that are conventionally seen as 'cozy' like Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, Unpacking etc. have never really felt 'cozy'. There is absolutely a cozy vibe in their art style. But despite these games generally being nice and not very stressful to play, I don't perceive them as 'cozy games'.
Games like Breath of the Wild, Sable, Death Stranding (despite the not-so-cozy name), or even driving games like Forza Horizon or free-roaming in GTA Vice City, feel more comforting and cozy to me. Something about taking a walk/drive with the sights and sounds of nature or a city (lizzie bennet voice: i'm very fond of walking). Minimal music, and a small but adequate amount of direction given by the game on where to go.
I'd love to know what folks here see as a cozy game!

Game Discussion Games that encourage external resources?
looking for game recs! having trouble of thinking of the right way to word this.
what I mean is, im looking for games that you could make a spreadsheet for, or a to do list, or read a wiki on, or track certain things, etc. anything extracurricular.
here are some examples
- stardew valley - wikis, lists, spreadsheets, im sure you’ve seen people scribbling furiously in their notebooks for this one
- pokemon games - i always make myself a little to do list to remember what I was doing. also researching pokemon to curate a balanced team.
- sims - I have spreadsheets to track challenges and family trees and builds
examples of games I don’t think fit this would be, generally speaking, platformers - goal is to stay alive and beat the level. not much to write down there. simple puzzle games like unpacking - again, not much to say, just unpack each level.
I hope this makes sense?? I just like nerd maxxing my games lol
edit: you guys really came through! Tysm! So many titles and a good portion I haven’t even heard of before :)

Game Discussion If you're looking for a new single-player narrative action game...
I strongly recommend Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy. Asobo's latest game might be their best yet. Especially for fans of Uncharted: Lost Legacy and Greek mythology—badass pirate lady chases down a treasure buried in a terrible curse.
And if you really love it, check out the other Plague Tale games too. Amicia is also a phenomenal female lead.
