Announcement Small Questions and FAQ Megathread

As the subreddit sees more and more small questions, we thought it would be a good idea to make a thread custom-suited to them. With that, here's a few ground rules!

(1) Have you checked the relevant FAQ for your game yet? If not, it might be a good idea to start there. There's more in these than you might expect, and it's very possible there's already an official answer for your question.

(2) Use the Search function to see if someone might have already asked your question. It might save you some time!

(3) Proper spoiler tags must be used. If you don't know how to use them or what to spoiler tag, please reference the r/Gloomhaven spoiler rules. All the other subreddit rules apply, too, of course.

NOTE - If you have questions related to the Frosthaven puzzle book, including both hints and full solutions, you can check this thread.

If you have questions about unlocking basically anything, this Frosthaven Unlock Guide and this Gloomhaven 2nd Edition Unlock Guide are great resources.

With that said, ask away! The sub is full of very helpful and knowledgeable people. :)

Gloomhaven 2nd Ed Gloomhaven 2e and Frosthaven Crossover Item Lists

Sorry for the delay on this, it's been a busy time! We are now releasing updated item import lists both from Frosthaven to Gloomhaven 2e and from Gloomhaven 2e to Frosthaven.

This will be added to Cephalofair's website in the future, although the website is undergoing some work at present so it's difficult to predict how soon that might be. /u/dwarfSA has both games' respective FAQs with this information incorporated and will publish those updates later today.

Gloomhaven 2e FAQ

Frosthaven FAQ

Otherwise you can find that information here and we will sticky this post. This post is entirely spoiler free as we use item numbers so you can browse without worry. Untagged spoilers in the comments will be removed (if you want to discuss an item in this post, use spoiler tags with the item number as the spoiler hint).

As usual, in order to import an item from one game to another, you must first have obtained that item in its origin game.

Frosthaven FH campaign progress update

3 real years into a 2p campaign. All but 2 classes unlocked, one main quest line to go. Winter year 3, prosperity 8, 62 scenarios complete, up to 53 scenarios to go. 5 buildings still locked, all possible building upgrades complete at this point until more are unlocked.

Just wondering, from those who completed the campaign: Did you typically play every side quest open to you? Do you continue with side quests after beating the main campaign, or just call it quits? Do you generally unlock and upgrade every building?

Not looking for spoilers. Just wondering if it is feasible to complete say 50 more scenarios, and by extension, play about 3 or 4 more classes. I've already retired 5 classes, about to retire my 6th, and my partner is on number 4.

Frosthaven Help Me Fix My Mess

So I worked on a great organization system for our Frosthaven which made setup and takedown soooo much faster. All was going great until one day....I accidentally dropped the cards.... literally almost everything in a mixed up heap. Now our active and non-active cards, event decks, etc. are all mixed together. Does anyone have some smart ideas for how I could go back and re-sort what road and town events we've completed, what craft-able and purchasable items are available vs not? Looking in hindsight, would have been nice to keep a log, but all we really have is the numbers added to the weekly calendar.

Jaws of the Lion Blood Tumor

So I’m wondering if the Blood Tumor heals behind closed doors. In Scenario 5, I played it as having full health right away because I hadn't read the rules carefully. I reached Scenario 7 and realized I had played it wrong.

Gloomhaven 2nd Ed Help me not be an anxious little idiot

Hey guys, hope you are all well.

I’ve been playing 2e with my group after finishing jaws of the lion. Been loving it so far really, amazing game. However it’s one of those that I don’t see myself replaying it for awhile after we finish it so my OCD wants me to play it as efficiently as possible the first time. This raises a few questions that have been weighing on me:

  1. When should you retire a character? As in, when is it ok to do so? Once I reach lvl 9 with one of them? Earlier than that? I’m afraid of doing it too early and lose fun stuff
  2. How many classes am I usually able to play in one playthrough? (My personal quest was really easy, I’m lvl 5 and I assume I can already retire if I finish a scenario that I was given)
  3. I’m playing Mindthief. Cool character. Are there any build guides I should look into?
  4. Whenever I get a new card, I add it to my play deck. However, there’s more cards than levels which means I won’t be able to play with all the cards. Is that true? Or am I able to rearrange my play deck at any time even if I didn’t unlock a new card?
  5. In your opinions, what are the coolest characters in the game?
  6. Any gameplay tips you can share? I.e. advice on fun quests/stuff to do, cool items, mechanics, etc.

I know it’s a shit post but I have severe FOMO with video games that is now being passed onto boardgames haha

Thanks!

Edit: to be clear, I’m aware that I HAVE TO retire a character once my quest is complete. However, using mindthief as an example, I’m purposefully avoiding scenario 58 so I don’t have to retire (assuming my quest ends with that scenario obviously)

Gloomhaven 2nd Ed ~20 scenarios in, still not totally sure how "dumb" monsters should be

Hello, thank you to all for the advice on Icecrag Ascent, we finally beat it.

Something else I've wanted to ask about is I still don't feel like I have my head wrapped around monster movement, and this will be especially important to us now as we both retired our characters and plan on playing with new classes that have summons.

In the picture shown below, the Brute is higher in initiative, and say the wolves have a movement of 4. I understand wolf 3 would go to the Tinkerer because it's closest, and I'm guessing wolf 1 would just move forward 3 and attack me? But what would wolf 2 do? Would it go to the Brute because it's highest in initiative, or would it go to the Tinkerer to avoid the fog?

Gloomhaven 1st Ed Spoiler X Envelope Spoiler

In what universe is the solo x scenario “Sands of Time” original anywhere near balanced?? I just played it 4 times failing every single time. I tried multiple strategies and all seem to fail. In my last attempt I barely made it to the final room and got to see that the stone golem has 15 HP and 3 shield. I’m at level 5 and it seems so far from achievable. Any advice?

Frosthaven Why is initiative the tiebreaker for enemy focus?

Hi folks, so half our group wants to change the way we do monster focus, and its caused some tension, so i'd like some help.

Our Banner Spear doesn't like that enemies gang up on whoever has fastest initiative, when 2 players are the same distance from the enemy. They don't feel its fair, and they want to roll dice to resolve those ties instead.

I've tried to explain: 1. That's the rule. 2. Faster initiatives are typically more powerful, so its kind of a balance thing. 3. The reason they're ganging up on you is because you're running out into the open by yourself.

Its caused a problem in our group, and i'd like to hear other opinions on this. We're playing Frosthaven with a party of 4 and we're level 3/4.

Gloomhaven 2nd Ed Frosthaven characters in Gloomhaven second edition

My 4 player party is about halfway through Gloomhaven second edition. In the interim, my second copy of the game showed up and my wife and I are running a 4 player party (2 characters each). My 4 player group is down to run a campaign again once we finish. I was thinking of opening up the option of using Frosthaven characters since we’ll have seen a lot of the Gloomhaven 2.0 characters used already and I think it can open the door for a unique party. My wife and I played through most of Frosthaven and have unlocked all the characters. We thought about playing Frosthaven next but we’ve all enjoyed the scenario design in Gloom 2.0 so much more.

Any characters from Frosthaven that you would not permit to be used?

Gloomhaven 2nd Ed Second edition Mindthief: Card Enhancement suggestions?

I just got to level 4 and have a bunch of money saved up, and want to invest in a card enhancement or two. Does anyone have any good suggestions for 2nd edition? I've found soooooo many 1st edition guides but none for 2nd edition. Adding a +1 to the attack on Hidden in the Shadows seems good, make it more likely to hit that kill. Anyone have other suggestions?

It was really challenging to get the colors in line with the card given all the little bugs on this guy and different colored panels. I also feel like I've had better luck with the "lighted object" painting in a mini but couldn't seem to get it how I wanted it with his blades. Still happy with how it turned out overall though!

Gloomhaven 2nd Ed Icecrag Ascent has me completely demoralized

We cannot beat this scenario, or come even close really, and I’m feeling extremely defeated, not to mention stupid.

We‘re a Tinekerer and Bruiser, both level 8. We‘ve beaten a lot of scenarios prior to this obviously being level 8 and it doesn’t even matter whether we play scenario level 4 or 3, we get beat. I don’t even know what else to say about it as I’m just feeling really demoralized/frustrated. Are there any tips that could help.

EDIT: .......it is done. We lowered the scenario level 1 to do it which I don't care for, but at some point I just had to move on. Plus I accomplished my retirement quest in the same scenario. A life well lived. Mostly.

My biggest problem continues to be my hesitation in playing lost cards. Starting with 10 and the game feeling as "long" as it does.....I'm just always really hesitant to play those cards unless I feel the end of the scenario is near and often times by that point I'm probably wasting opportunities to make the game shorter by playing better cards.

Thank you all for the encouragement/tips. I have to be honest this game can frustrate me pretty hard at times, but it's mainly due to thinking of all the maintenance/setup that has to be done and really not wanting to repeat all of it lol. Failing hurts for multiple reasons.

Gloomhaven 2nd Ed Scenario 63 question

Fading Lighthouse. The monsters are in two groups that activate in alternating rounds. When inactive the rules say you can move through them and they can’t be affected by abilities.

So my question is would monsters in the active and inactive group be considered to be adjacent to each other if they were on adjacent hexes? Mostly for the purposes of an ability like Silent Knife’s “add +1 if target is adjacent to none of its allies? “

Digital Gloomhaven How to unlock Jaws side scenarios on PC

Hi,

I’ve been Googling this for a while now and came across some very disappointing news that I’d like to verify.

My understanding is that I need a Jaws of the Lion character in my party to access their personal quests during a City Encounter. However, the bad news I found in discussions on Steam is that if I don’t have a Jaws of the Lion character in my party and I draw one of those encounters, it gets discarded and can never be drawn again... Is this true?

Gloomhaven 2nd Ed Second Edition Mindthief Solo Scenario Guide

Kia Ora all! It's been a while. Winter illnesses and whatnot here in NZ.

I decided I wanted to do some solo scenario guides for 2e characters, and thought my first one would be for Cragheart, but my Mindthief, Sqatter, retired first.

I'll be the first one to say it, I'm not that great at playing Mindthief. I don't know why. The play style just doesn't gel with how I like to play.

So, please have a read and let me know where I've made mistakes!

Frosthaven Frosthaven question

Hi all,

I’m trying to decide whether to make the jump into Frosthaven. Someone local is selling an unopened game for $100 (at a discount, with a slight ding to the corner of the box).

I see that MSRP is around $250, so it seems like a great deal.

I would be playing entirely solo. I have experience playing games two-handed (LoTR LCG, marvel champions, jaws of the lion), so I’m not too worried about playing multiple characters. Though I understand this game has more complicated characters.

I really enjoyed Jaws of the Lion, but that was a few years ago. I’ve always been interested in gloomhaven or Frosthaven but shied away from the price.

Long story short, I’m wondering if $100 is too good a deal to pass up?

Thank you!
