Going up and down North Kaibab during the flood

Some photos or screenshots of videos that I took during my R3 trot during the flood (mostly North Kaibab area). The storm came while I was at the North Rim general store-- definitely lucked out. Didn't really comprehend how bad it was while descending the rim until I saw the helipad in pieces and no bridge to cross at Manzanita.

South Rim has ~2 weeks of water reserve

Grand Canyon leadership did a press conference Monday night. On the question of water supply:

  • South Rim currently has approximately two weeks of water storage
  • The actual timeline depends on daily consumption by residents and visitors
  • Leadership is conducting daily evaluations of usage rates to determine if additional conservation measures needed
  • Environmental regulations prohibit transporting water in from outside sources
  • The 40% of damage to the old water pipeline is equal to about 5 miles

The park is also staging temporary water tanks throughout the village as a dedicated firefighting reserve to ensure emergency response capacity remains intact.

Visiting the Park This Week, Hotel Outside the Park

My partner and I are heading to the South Rim in two days. We're staying outside the park at the Grand Canyon Hotel & Suites in Tusayan. Given the water restrictions at the park, we're planning on driving in with our hydration backpacks and water bottles filled up, along with leaving some additional water gallons in the car. We aren't planning on going deep into the canyon--just doing Ooh Aah Point on South Kaibab and then maybe going to the 1.5 Mile Resthouse on Bright Angel. Otherwise, we're going to walk on the Rim Trail to catch the sights.

Given all that, I think we should be good to visit, but I want to check if we should make any contingency plans or adjust our itinerary in any way.

Transcanyon Pipeline 40% damaged/destroyed

The latest GRCA Facebook post indicates two bodies found and 40% of the Transcanyon Pipeline damaged or destroyed.

"Search and recovery efforts continue following the flooding in Grand Canyon National Park. Two bodies have been recovered. Preliminary assessments indicate approximately 40% of the Transcanyon Waterline was damaged or destroyed. Forecasted weather may affect the timing and pace of operations.

Visitors are asked to remain out of the closure area while search and recovery operations continue. Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, the Phantom Ranch Canteen and cabins, and the entire North Kaibab Trail from the North Kaibab Trailhead to Phantom Ranch remain closed until further notice.

For current conditions and updates, visit: https://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/conditions.htm "

Anyone have info regarding white water rafters safe after flash flood?

Hey all,

One of my friends is currently on a white water rafting trip in the grand canyon and of course I'm worried about her safety after hearing about the flash flood. She hasn't returned my texts but I realize there's no cell service so now I am at a loss. They were slated to raft for about 18 days and I believe they left around 8/23 or 8/24. I don't know what outfit they used other than they were going with some Arizona locals and a former guide. I have reviewed several articles and Reddit posts about those missing and/or deceased, and those appear to be mostly hikers and campers. Can anyone give me any concrete info about rafters being evacuated or something similar? Are some folks allowed back out on the water or are these trips also stopped during recovery efforts? Any and all info is appreciated to calm my anxiety. Thanks in advance from a worried friend. ❤️‍🩹

Grand Canyon Flood

One man was found dead and some 15 people were still believed to be missing Monday morning in Grand Canyon National Park after parts of the canyon were hit by major flash floods over the weekend. The raging waters swept boulders, infrastructure and other debris into the Colorado River after a storm dropped a huge amount of precipitation in a very short period of time, officials said.

The body of a 46-year-old man was recovered Sunday evening near Crystal Rapids on the Colorado River, the National Park Service said, without providing any additional information. The NPS called for anyone who knew of hikers or backpackers who were in Bright Angel Canyon or the Phantom Ranch area on Saturday afternoon, when the flash floods hit, to provide information to park authorities.

Are all the construction workers ok?

I was wondering if all the workers on the pipeline were ok? I made a friend while I was camping down there, but I did not get his number so there’s no way to contact him to check on him. His name was Thaddeus if anyone knows him?

R2R alternative? 🫶🏻

First and foremost, massive amounts of positive thoughts being sent to the rescue responders and staff managing the flood and the long foreseen aftermath. And hope for those still missing. Tragic.

Not nearly as important though needing to address it just the same- alternative to R2R or just cancel? Was wanting that break yourself off, visit the devil, bucket list check off experience…

Time to cancel our trip?

My partner and I will be in Zion NP this weekend, and we were planning on making the drive down to the South Rim to spend one night at Bright Angel Lodge. Neither of us have ever been to the Grand Canyon.

Obviously, our lodge reservation has been cancelled. We are so sad to hear about the flooding, the damage, and the lives lost. It is truly heartbreaking.

We are considering rebooking in Tusayan, or switching gears and spending a night in Jacob Lake to visit the North Rim instead. Of course, we would bring our own water either way.

However, is it a good idea to rebook, or pivot to the North Rim? Or should we skip GCNP altogether?

We do not want to put additional strain on the resources of the park during this tough time, especially while there are still missing persons. Just wondering what's the most appropriate plan of action.

Hello is anyone traveling from Zion to south rim today, tomorrow or Thursday? My husband left his coat for a wedding at a hotel in Springdale and we are looking to see if someone could potentially get it and bring it with them.

Monthly photo thread

Post your Grand Canyon shots - rim, inner canyon, or river, any year, phone shots welcome. Say which rim or trail and what month if you remember - light and season change everything here, and it helps people plan.

How-did-you-get-that questions are on topic too.

Trans Canyon Shuttle cancelled but they are refusing refunds

Has anyone had experience getting a refund from these guys? They cancelled all the shuttles and rightfully so, definitely not their fault, but all they are offering is a credit that expires in 18 months. Will r2r even reopen before then.

Obviously the rescue efforts are the most important thing, but why does that let these guys keep my $200 after not providing the service at all?

Edit: for everyone saying “this was the terms”, “youre ridiculous for expecting a refund”. How about if we let all the airlines just keep your money if they cancel your flight? There is a reason we have federal protections against similar behavior: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2024/04/26/2024-07177/refunds-and-other-consumer-protections

Edit 2: for anyone else facing this, if you so choose, you have an option of reporting this operator to the Arizona Attorney General, Consumer Protection Division. File online at azag.gov/consumer, call 1-800-352-8431 (toll-free in Arizona) or 602-542-5763 (Phoenix), Filing is free. They’ll forward the complaint to Trans-Canyon with a 15-day response deadline.

Edit 3: lots of insults thrown at me so far and also a report for s*****e watch. “Mentally unstable”, “entitled Karen”, “adult child”. Clearly a classy crowd who support this business.

Edit 4: one guy is now pretending to be a mod and claiming to “lock” this post. When so many people are angry at you for asking questions, that’s when you know you’re asking the right things.

FYI the same threads on Facebook are being dominated by group admins who claim to be close with this operator.

Overnight stays at the end of September

Hey everyone,

I'm supposed to be coming to the Grand Canyon and staying at Yavapai Lodge toward the end of September. I know about the flooding, water restrictions, and the tragedy of people still missing but I'm not sure what to do about my accommodation.

I gather it's possible that things might be back to normal. I also see that for the moment the company behind Yavapai Lodge are accommodating people in Tusayan automatically. Is that likely to still be the case - automatically just moving people there? Or should I make my own arrangements and plan to just do day visits to the park do you think?
