Same vibe as someone who fits their life and house out with all the smart tech, but get then gets a job in cyber security, realises the truth and ends up ripping it all out and going back to pen and paper.

330

u/Ricordis 17h ago

That's me. After working in cyber security for a while I started to write my logins and passwords into a booklet which is in my upper desk drawer. Also mutliple mail adresses.

Cyber security teached me there's no security. It's just about being annoying to be hacked and have a low loss rate due to redundancies or partitioning.

My accounts have never been compromised due to written down passwords. Just gonna leave that statement here.

81

u/DroidSeeker 14h ago

Nothing beats a good booklet or sticky notes.

41

u/rhycelcius 13h ago

Or, even better, remembering what you can and resetting them when you can’t.

14

u/So_many_things_wrong 7h ago

Who is gonna break into your house to see if you have passwords written down in a notebook? It simply won't happen. You're honestly way better off making up a really long and complicated password that you can't remember but have written down on paper than a password that's simple enough that you can remember it.

36

u/Kayttajatili 13h ago

I mean... it makes sense. Anything digital can theoretically fall into the hands of any random cheeto dusted neckbeard. But that same cheeto dusted neckbeard is not going to be breaking into your home.

29

u/Ricordis 12h ago

I like to say: If anyone breaks into my apartment and steals my booklet I actually habe completely different concerns this very moment.

6

u/Linvael 12h ago

You can be arbitrarily annoying to hackers as long as you're willing to annoy yourself too to make it happen. Most do not.

6

u/Gamerthu1hu 9h ago

Am I hackable? Absolutely. What will hacking me get you? Hopefully a sense of pity, like, how does someone get THAT POOR?!?

2

u/DarienKane 8h ago

Taught is the word you were looking for.

2

u/YallKnowWhyIAmHere96 6h ago

Like 20 years ago I shared a floor with cyber security and investigators. I saw them create profiles on people based on their online browsing patterns. even adult content was used to see what the person was attracted to.Ever since then I will just randomly add a massive filler about of content to my searches. Exmachina the movie furthered that fear.

1

u/Wide-Equivalent6863 1h ago

Mine have. Even if you live with someone you don't think would steal your passwords, they might

1

u/TightBed8201 41m ago

Well, password manager with good encryption+mfa+pin/fingerprint is annoying enough for anyone trying to hack.

Anyone with more than two brain cells can keep themself safe with MFA. It is not bulletproof but you can at least have some level of control.

13

u/Alice_Alisceon 8h ago

Sadly then comes the full circle of working in this industry where you realize that all hope is lost no matter what you do so you make whatever concessions you have to to lead a comfortable life still. So long as my lock is better than that of my neighbors and so long as I can outrun my friend, it doesn’t really matter if my lock is actually secure or I if can outrun the bear or not. If I get actively and personally targeted by a sophisticated enough entity there is no saving me, no matter how hard I try and how much time I spend preparing.

Yeah well, the Adeptus Mechanicus are warped by the dude who skinned the Necrontyr

Are you implying cults may have downsides?

The Imperium isn't a cult. The holy god emporer himself said so.

The Imperial Cult is the official religion of the Imperium though. Literally its formal name in High Gothic is Cult Imperialis.

1

u/spacebrovakarian 1h ago

Yeah but that's just a state religions name. Not an evil cult.

36

Cults have tradeoffs, not downsides.

122

u/Competitive-Half-863 20h ago

Void dragon is a chard or even a full C’Tan.
There are rumours that he tried to create his own slave race in order to fight necrons, and those slaves found out to be Machanicum

152

u/Mastercio 19h ago

I don't know why people still put theory about full void dragon...we have god damn minis of a shards...

85

u/Competitive-Bee-3250 19h ago

Its basically all just to glaze big E for beating it in a fight

76

u/Mastercio 18h ago

Yeah beating "just" a shard is not enough for them isn't it xD It's funny considering in the story he himself admitted that he wasn't able to kill it(and that means he tried and failed at it).

52

u/Competitive-Bee-3250 18h ago

Yeah cuz its not enough to be able to beat a fragment of a star-eater using nothing but your own magic and might, it has to be the full embodiment of a being that can eat stars...and yet the fight simply didn't shatter continents or trigger mass extinction events somehow.

33

u/pass_nthru 18h ago

well mars used to be covered in water with a. atmosphere…big science just wants you to think it was a natural process and not the result of a battle of titanic proportions

4

u/Competitive-Bee-3250 13h ago

Well the fight was on earth in front of a bunch of people outside a walled city

2

u/Otto_Pussner 12h ago

Do you have a source on that? I’ve never heard of it being on earth, only on mars.

2

u/Competitive-Bee-3250 10h ago

The only source i know of for the fight was in the novel Mechanicum, and in that a techpriest sees the dragons memories, which is when this fight is described.

Considering the fight against just transcend shard can resolve in collateral damage so big that entire planets can get erased(when Orikan fought Transcendent shard of the deciever a single attack erased 6 planets) clash with full one would most likely erase entire systems and sectors.

2

u/goonwolf 15h ago

Yeah, but the big E or something, he can beat whatever the writers throw at him

1

u/Mastercio 14h ago

u/goonwolf 14h ago

Motherfucker is apparently better than tzeentch at planning things.

17

u/gbghgs 18h ago

Tbf, the fight with the shard takes place long before he goes to molech to "steal fire" from the gods. So he wasn't quite the pyschic juggernaut we from the GC and the heresy when he fought it. Which makes beating even a shard pretty damn impressive.

1

u/Worldly-Hospital5940 2h ago

The original lore implied that it was the full Void Dragon but that got changed to a Shard like...6 editions ago?

1

u/Mastercio 2h ago

The original only said he defeated a "dragon" and that is term that it's still used even for shards.

1

u/Worldly-Hospital5940 1h ago

I'll be the first to admit I'm not a loremaster of the Necrons, but wasn't the Ctan being broken into Shards a 5th edition lore expansion? Prior to that the lore was just full-on Ctan running around with their Necron slave race Terminator ripoffs.

19

u/Sepulcher18 Snorts FW resin dust 19h ago

If we look at Necrons, 99%+ of them are not even aware of themselves so I am sure they don't mind their fate too much atm, millions upon millions of years after they were vored by sun satans.

I am sure Skitarii fembois would not care being in similar situation themselves, at least that way they avoided chaos, are one with their god of choice and all that jazz

The fact that this isn't confirmed yet does make it kinda funny IMO that the Admech might be the only faction who's god is entirely false.

Not just "not a true god" like the Emperor (or at least as he was). But actually fully made up, and nonexistent.

What truth would be worse for a Tech Priest to learn? That their god was the Void Dragon, who has terrible (but mechanical) plans for their future, or that they were just entirely wrong?

194

u/King_Lothar_ 17h ago

iirc it's a fragment of the Void Dragon. It's mentioned in one of the Horus Heresy books. Not explicitly stated to be the void dragon, but the implication feels fairly heavy handed.

u/thewarden106 Railgun Goes Brrrrrrrrr 15h ago

Albeit a very large Shard, possibly the largest Shard able to be contained.

29

u/West-Fold-Fell3000 14h ago

I prefer entirely wrong. Abandonment of the flesh in a never ending quest for ancient knowledge turning out to be a quest for falsehoods would be poetic, just as the Ministorums worship of a god who never wanted to be one is poetic.

31

u/BigBrownDog12 16h ago

uh Space Marines have an entire book called False Gods buddy /s

7

u/Dark_Tigger 10h ago

We have at least one Titan Legion Princeps being saved from the Warp after death, by the machine spirit of her god machine. There must be something there, right?

9

u/Andrew_42 10h ago

I don't doubt the power of the god machines, only the Machine God.

But yeah, something is making a bunch of random junk work after you pray over it. Maybe the Admech are unconsciously developing ork-style reality influence. "The red purity seals make it go faster"

Or maybe the Emperor is taking his role as the Omnissiah seriously. Idk, I only know enough lore to make the occasional joke.

9

u/anonanonananonymous 8h ago

That's what I love about Admech. They have a lot of candidates for god (emperor, void dragon/dragon of mars, Vashtorr, the Akashic) but none og them are perfect fits and none are actually admech aligned. So it leads to them having an extremely inconsistent belief system where schisms happen all the time because they have to strictly follow this scripture that has extremely imprecise wording.

34

u/ImNotABotScoutsHonor 17h ago

the only faction who's god is entirely false.

12

u/ImNotABotScoutsHonor 15h ago

What's your point?

2

u/SecretlyanArsonist 9h ago

But wouldn't the Void Dragon qualify as their god? Sure he's a different guy than they think, with other motives and somewhat different powers, but a machine god no less. The Genestealers belief of their gods is quite similar. The hive mind is very different from their Star Children, but it is real and their beliefs differ from the truth only in semantics.

2

u/Andrew_42 8h ago

I don't really know the lore super well, but my impression is that the void dragon('s shard) is pretty strongly implied to be involved, but at this point it's all still implication (however strong), and not yet explicit.

By comparison, Gork and Mork aren't mere implications. Cegorach the Laughing God is actively running around causing trouble. The four Chaos Gods are a massive and obvious very real problem for everyone. The C'tan (while intact) and the Ancient Ones have left massive scars in the cosmos that still cause trouble to this day.

Every other God I've heard of in the setting is overwhelmingly obvious in their presence and influence. But the Machine God...? Still lives in the land of "probably".

The biologis still gladly replace their meat with machine when the machine is better. Neural implants and mechadendrites being big ones. They don’t believe Flesh > Metal, they believe the flesh is a machine like any other and thus should be improved when possible, replaced when not, but honoured all the same.

There's a running theory that the horror at the centre of the labyrinth is the void dragon, a c'tan shard/mostly full c'tan once defeated by the emperor and buried under mars, that has been exerting influence over Mars for centuries or millennia and may be the reason the mechanicus is like that

The stories about it are pretty vague so you can kinda read it how you like

79

u/Saxhleel13 Secretly 3 squats in a long coat 18h ago

I would add that it's not only a fan theory, but one that some in-universe residents of Mars do believe in secret. It's a matter of whether those guys are onto something or just crazy and/or heretics.

8

u/HoldJerusalem 17h ago

Where does this come from tho? Is it something happening in a book or something ?

20

u/Grunn84 15h ago

Its something thats been hinted at since the early 2000s.

The meme the OP post is literally what happens to a techpriest in the 3rd edition necron codex, another priest visits him in his cell and notes he has torn our all his implants and rants about what is hidden on mars and how he now knows the truth.

Battlefleet gothic a few years later had a formation of necron ships that penetrated the solar system, they attempted to bypass mars defences and a single ship landed on the surface before being destroyed and quarantined by the ad mech.

I believe mechanicum in the HH series went a lot more in depth on the "dragon of mars" but the idea had been kicking around since the first necron codex.

3

7

u/SamuraiMujuru 12h ago

A shard of the Void Dragon is contained within the Noctis Labyrinth, and has been for dozens of millenia. A battle between the as-yet unrevealed Emperor and Void Dragon is somewhat implied to be the origins of the legend of Saint George and the Dragon.

What this means in practicality is that the realty-warping nature of the C'tan is what inspired/influenced the belief in the Machine God, presumably mingled with some flavor of Christianity give the three-in-one nature of the Machine God. (Father/Machine God, Son/Omnissiah, Holy Spirit/Motive Force) and the foundation of the Mechanicum's technological superiority over the rest of humanity is built on Necron technology.

u/Lopsided-Junket-7590 7h ago

The omnissiah is the largest shard of a Catan a god of the physical universe given a mechanical body it's called the void Dragon the emperor trapped it in The labyrinth to help speed up the development of Mars

1

u/ApprehensiveGear2166 5h ago

Why would someone rip out their implants while they still can?

1

u/Lopsided-Junket-7590 5h ago

The whole destroy the Xeno thing that the imperium has. And since their technology originally came from the void Dragon there's the possibility that the void Dragon can take control of them spreading its influence more readily

1

u/biomeat 5h ago

Ctan are the ones who tricked the Necrons into their metal bodies I.e the void dragon might be doing the same

1

u/lumpboysupreme 2h ago

The void dragons association with controlling technology would leave the mechanicus critically vulnerable to its influence if it ever awoke.

It also may or may not be eating their souls when they replace their biological bits the same way the c’tan did with the Necrons.

1

u/MutoFan 10h ago

Realistically I imagine said tech priest would just hit the "clearly im not mechanical enough to see the god" and implement even more implants and robotic replacements to their body until all thats left are the most necessary of organs (mostly just the brain). The fervor many of the mechanicus have for the omnissiah is unbreakable

u/Vindartn 7h ago

There is a shard of the Void Dragon on Mars, or the Void Dragon itself. I believe Mechanicum (the HH novel) was published before the Necron change from C'Tan ruling them to Necrons have them in pokeballs, so it might have intended to be the latter.

Anyhow, the truth is the Emperor of Mankind imprisoned the Void Dragon on Mars so the machine god they worship is actually the subtle influence of the C'Tan shard.

-3

u/Blueflame_2063 19h ago

i know there's a ctan shard and some other crazy shit at the center of mars but is it that insane?

6

u/Hyko_Teleris 17h ago

Even if the truth itself isnt insanity inducing the labyrinth itself is a cosmic horror non euclidian nightmare of architecture that just fries people that base their entire ideology on logic and knowledge (like the admech) due to how impossible it is (like seeing all corners of an infite room at the same time no matter where you're looking at)

u/Mattm519 7h ago

When I got to this section in Mechanicus I just didn’t understand why it was such a big deal. The emperor is the Omnissiah and he planted all the seeds for Mars, that reinforces his position as Omnissiah doesn’t it?
