Fabio Vieira has joined Bundesliga side Hamburger SV on a permanent transfer.

The 26-year-old joined us from Primeira Liga club FC Porto in June 2022 and made 49 appearances for the club across all competitions.

Fabio spent the last two seasons on loan, returning to boyhood club FC Porto for the 2024/25 campaign before joining Hamburger SV last season. He enjoyed a productive spell in Germany, scoring seven goals and providing five assists as the club competed back in the Bundesliga after seven years.

An impressive debut season saw the Portuguese midfielder make 33 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and assisting six times. Fabio’s form continued into the following campaign when he scored the winning penalty in the season’s curtain-raiser, as we beat Manchester City 4-1 in the shootout to lift the 2023 Community Shield at Wembley Stadium.

Everyone at Arsenal would like to thank Fabio for his contribution to the club and wish him and his family every success for the future.

Genuinely think him and Lokonga were unlucky we started to challenge for the title the year we bought them. They got pushed aside as they were project players that the clubs needs immediately outgrew

Vieira and Smith Rowe in midfield really cemented the point of how important physicality is in midfield. If you can be easily shoved off the ball in a shoulder to shoulder then at least you need the work rate to hassle opponents and quick feet to shimmy out of challenges, like Odegaard

Shame it couldn’t work for him, he had an excellent final ball but just couldn’t impose himself on games really.

I don’t really blame him, he was a victim of the position he was put in - still quite a raw player who didn’t get the minutes he would have needed as we were thrust into a title challenge in 22/23 and Ødegaard was simply undroppable. He’s a talented player though and he’ll do well in Germany.

Damn, can y’all stop roasting a player who pushed his level for us and wanted to be here? He wasn’t up to the prem’s physicality but he had flashes of brilliance and good decision-making, and was ultimately a serviceable backup on the right the one season we gave him a shot. Idk about everyone here but I remember him scoring a banger and delivering some nice assists when we needed creativity. And sure we lost money but we paid rising talent prices and he hit a lower ceiling than we wanted, and now no rich club is going to splash on him.

I really hoped it would work for him, rocket of a shot and an eye for an assist, but ultimately was poor off the ball, a lack of presence/personality on the pitch all too often and was completely passive.

Still don’t understand why he didn’t bulk up. Also I don’t think he was a great influence on Martinelli for some reason, maybe because they were like best friends and Martinelli’s performances started to dip then. Probably just coincidence but confidence breeds confidence.
