YouTube [David Ornstein] No more signings, Arsenal are done for the window. Arsenal went for Marquee players like Vinicius and Alvarez. Arsenal have decided to keep the powder dry.

It’s not cope, it’s just inarguably fact. We were willing to go higher than Chelsea paid for Rogers for both, they just didn’t want to join. We were offered to match the bid for Rogers and declined - if we were fine with the finances of the Vini deal there’s essentially no player in football we wouldn’t sign providing the fee is something we find reasonable for the player in question

We know everyone is complaining and wants the shiny new toy but we got McDonalds at home. It makes sense to keep funds for top guys. Like a Yildiz, a Kroupi, a Osimhen, etc. Now other teams add young prospects and flip them (which is smart in a way), but Arteta ain’t really about that. Whether we like it or not Arteta is not selling anyone on a lie like so many of these young signings are being told.
At the start I said MLS, Merino, Dowman and Nwaneri would have important parts to play this season. I’m down one, but MLS is going to be huge, Merino is going to fill in a lot cracks and Dowman…..don’t be surprised when he gets folded in. With Nwaneri I’m going to replace him with Eze. Now it’s Eze time to step up.

We can’t rely on Havertz, Odegaard and Merino to stay fit. Madueke isn’t good enough, Arteta doesn’t trust Gykores and we’re down two attackers in Martinelli or Trossard. We were meant to strengthen the attack and instead we’ve weakened it.

He had some highs and lows. Helped make the first goal, could have had an assist if Bruno scored (or earned a penalty). Should have been played through by Saka as well.
But he had a few bad turnovers in the transition. I like him a lot more in LW than at the 10.

CONTINUED:
Vinicius was really close to joining and he was the player the club worked most on. Alvarez was the next choice. Tzolis was signed as a sort of rotation option for the marquee attacker but no marquee attacker was signed by Arsenal. Mallick Fofana was just an interest as a player to develop for the future. We have seen deals done from Arsenal at the very end of deadline day as a surprise like Ozil and Sterling and Welbeck so all hope is not lost for Arsenal fans but as far as my sources are concerned, Arsenal have decided to keep the powder dry to pursue their targets in the winter or next summer window.

Leo's game seems like it will age very well too, he's very crafty and was never the fastest or quickest anyways.
On the other hand we signed Bruno G because he's elite at playing through balls and Martinelli was a legitimate threat to run in behind.

He was finished as soon as Arteta picked Eze over him and Trossard for City away.
The three options this summer were sell for £60 mil, sign a new contract or try to sell again in the final year of his contract. If Arteta doesn't even rate him as a winger over Eze then there was only one real option there.

From an attacking perspective, coming off winning a league title, that's a very, very poor performance from Berta et al. Should have seized the opportunity to solidify our position at the top of the table, but now we risk a lot of games looking like last season's, where we struggle to put up more than a goal.
I hope Havertz, Saka, & Ode stay fit and prove me wrong. But it's a real risk now.

8
u/will-9000 2h ago
Barcola could have been the one potentially. But I think Arteta didn't rate him at that price. Seems clear that Arteta and the board are agreed that they have the funds for one break-the-bank attacker, and Arteta would rather wait for his target than go for Barcola. Less sure about what happened with Rogers but I always had questions about how he'd fit in our team.

Martinell, Trossard and Jesus accounted for roughly 6,300 minutes last season, equivalent to 70 full 90s. With all three gone, who exactly is supposed to cover those minutes?
Even if the new starters stay fit, you still need rotation across the PL, Champions League and domestic cups. One injury on the left wing and suddenly the squad looks incredibly thin.
Going into the season without signing a proper LW backup feels like a massive and completely unnecessary gamble.
You don't replace 70 games' worth of minutes with "we'll figure it out"
23
u/Jellyfish_McSaveloy 4h ago
Eze/Tzolis will be taking Martinelli and Trossard minutes. Eze's original minutes will be taken by Merino/Odegaard. Rice and Zubimendi's minutes will be managed by MLS/Bruno. Jesus/ST minutes will be taken by Havertz/Gyokeres.
There's 2 senior players for every position. If you think up it's light then it's the same situation for the backline.
11
u/010u3 4h ago
The difference is the backline is already top tier.

The quality not being there is a valid argument, but the point about lack of personnel isn't. Signing Malick Fofana for instance doesn't solve the quality issue if Arteta doesn't believe they're a needle mover. Look at how many minutes Norgaard played last year and it shows that a body means sod all if the manager doesn't believe in the quality. Or even MLS until the latter stages of the season.
A better question is whether Gakpo or Ndiaye is a 65-85m improvement to the LW over Eze, especially if it means compromising the long term outlook on that position. I don't think it is.
With the benefit of hindsight overpaying for Rogers or going for Gordon before Barca would have been a good move, but everyone here has two balls and none made of crystal.

Gabi Jesus contributed basically zero productive or minutes worth talking about last season, relax.
Trossard has been replaced by Tzolis
Martinelli hasn’t been directly replaced, and that’s the main issue. Eze will likely pick up minutes there this season. Nice contribution on the goal yesterday.

This just sucks. Sucks we missed out on Vini. Sucks we can’t just create a player and pay $150M to improve the attack because what we need doesn’t exist on the market.
Sucks we sold a loyal, essentially home grown winger who despite a bad contract at least offered pace and workrate that at the very least showed up in the champions league.
Sucks we went into this window hoping to take the next step as a club and all we did in attack was balance the books.
Maybe we start using Calafiori at winger and Hincapie at LB as the alternative to Tzolis/Eze

I wish I didn’t open this thread. We can be so fucking reactionary is so pathetic man, some of yall are really greedy af. We have rice, bruno, the captain, zubi, merino and MLS for midfield options. We have saka, dowman, tzolis, noni and now eze for the wings. Gyok/havertz and again merino for ST, when saliba and timber comes back that’s 9 mix of world class defense and promising talents in mosquera and salmon. How can you be miserable and not satisfied with that? You the same lot that will be coming for arteta and berta’s head if say they signed someone just for the sake of signing and things end up not working out.
It’s been two fucking games with 2/2 wins and clean sheets without our starting best cb in the world, yet yall just yapping away. There’s literally no available LW out there that’ll come in and be a level riser for us.
4
u/FCOranje 1h ago
Absolutely agree. Plenty of squad depth. The only sale I disagree with is Trossard. The rest has been perfectly fine, considering the amount of players back from injury (ie saka; odegaard; and havertz).
3
u/ObviousGeologist3000 Kaiju no.29 1h ago
Trossard was on his last year and Arsenal were never gonna extend him again. Who says he’ll be fit and still firing next summer and that a turkish team will still be interested in offering him big wages even though he’s a free agent then? Arteta was clearly done with martinelli since last season despite all his contributions in the ucl, and he literally told him straight up that he’s not in his plans this season. How do you keep someone like that on huge wages all the while having a club willing to pay 70m for him? I legit scroll past any post about martinelli now because that’s how bad I hate the transfer, but when you put feelings aside and start thinking logically both him and trossard deals makes sense.
MLS 100% in midfield unless all 3 of cala, hincapie and big gabi are out is like a new signing, bruno is looking like he’s gonna end up being the best signing of the PL this season. With that in mind is a no brainer to assume eze days in midfield are almost done unless again injury hits us as usual. Trossard/martinelli out, tzolis/eze in. It’s that simple. We legit went for freaking vini, and now a lot of comments are trashing berta for not paying psg fucking 140m for barcola, you’d think he has already bagged 10 goals and 10 assists for Liverpool already🤦🏾♂️.

If they don't have anyone they like right now it's the best decision. But the decision to let Martinelli leave is terrible, we don't have a pace LW anymore. I hope Eze can play better in the wing bit he doesn't have the work rate of Tzolis and Martinelli either.

u/DenzelOntario Maple Syrup Connoisseur 4h ago
Selling Martinelli was the right move, because this was literally the only time we could’ve cashed on him for that kind of money.
But we should’ve just held on to Trossard until the end of the window. And kept him if we signed nobody.
His selling value was small. Should’ve just kept him for 1 more season and then let him leave on a free.
