**RANT** 𤏠This needs to stop
Is it me, or do cars speed up as you walk in the crosswalks? Sometimes people donât stop at all. Super scary! Despite additional stop signs, it still happens just as much.

They did this last year all of May and June at 2nd and Madison. It does happen.

Just park a cop at willow and 14th and park and 14th. No stop signs, but plenty of traffic violations.

They already make a lot of money as is. They just don't bother. Hoboken police chief earns a salary of $315k doing not much.
They can't enforce traffic rules with ~150ish staff in 1 mile square town. What a joke!

I worked at a business with a location in Hobo and one in JC when the alarm got set off in Hobo the cops showed up in minutes. When the same thing happened in JC it took 2 hours

So? That's like the minimum requirement, no? Otherwise they don't do their job at all. I didn't claim that. I claimed they don't do much. Showing up to an alarm is not a lot of work. It probably happens at most once a day in Hoboken and among 150 police, that's achievable, no?
But are they not also tasked with enforcing the traffic laws or am I mistaken there?
Do we see that happening, hell no!

I donât disagree w/ you itâs a problem all over Hudson county. I live in west Hoboken and donât get me started on all the cars parked in the bus stops, crosswalks etc (my own personal hill to die on) just saying theyâre not the worst of hud coâs pds. People deserve better

I understand we don't have it the worst, but the worst shouldn't be our reference point. We can still demand better, and it is up to other towns to do the same. Things will not improve out of the goodness of their hearts unless we push for it.
You also have to factor in that our town is very small in both population and area. We likely have a high ratio of police officers relative to our population and geographic size, so by that virtue alone, things should be better. When you also consider the higher end of salaries, it is only natural to expect better enforcement, or at least some enforcement. Right now, it feels like the Wild West with zero enforcement. Isn't that wild?

Worked in the school district in town, I had to pass by the high school everyday. So many issues. People wouldnât stop for moms with strollers.

Itâs really bad. I find the NJ transit buses in the morning along the Clinton route are the worst offenders.

It makes sense to stop for NJT buses as a courtesy to all riders that need to keep on schedule. Also, give courtesy to ambulances and funeral processions.

Not at all. The point you miss, is that pedistrians and vehicles can operate cooperatively to ensure both safety and smooth flow - and yes, even respect and harmony.

I drive daily in Hoboken and I 100% slow down for everyone at crosswalks. So not everyone does it.

I usually walk in Hoboken. The drivers are pretty aggressive. The pedestrians are awful as well, especially runners. Delivery dudes on bikes take the cake as the worst.

Drove back into Hoboken last night and from observer highway to Bloomfield I counted 27 ebike delivery driversâŚ. Insane.

If people are ordering delivery is there a better option? The ebikes are purely based on demand of people in Hoboken getting delivery for just about everything.
Having delivery people using ebikes is better than when they all used cars and didn't stop for pedestrians and blew through stop signs. The delivery robots are coming to Hoboken so maybe that will help.

My standard notification about NJâs White Cane law, which in case you donât know there is more than one person in town who is blind/visually impaired.
White Cane Law
39:4-37.1 Right-of-way crossing intersection for blind person, guide dog instructor.
Any blind person using as a guide a walking cane, predominantly white or metallic in color or any blind person using as a guide a seeing-eye dog or other dog trained as a guide for the blind, equipped with a rigid âUâ-shaped harness such as customarily used on dog guides or any guide dog instructor engaged in instructing a guide dog shall have the right-of-way in crossing any highway or any intersection thereof, and all drivers of vehicles shall yield the right-of-way to such blind person or guide dog instructor engaged in instructing a guide dog although traffic on said highway or intersection thereof is controlled by traffic signals, anything in the motor vehicle and traffic laws of this State to the contrary notwithstanding. The failure of a blind person or guide dog instructor to comply with the provisions of this act shall not give rise to a conclusive presumption of contributory negligence by such person. The provisions of this section shall not apply where traffic is specially directed by a traffic or police officer. L.1939,c.274,s.1; amended 1946, c.208; 1971, c.81; 1999, c.264, s.2.
This also means if you have green light and the blind person has a donât walk sign the blind person has the right of way. Because not all traffic lights are ADA compliant and include an audible signal for the blind.

Love these threads. Drivers are generally bad here. Tons of run stop signs (more doesnât mean people respect them at all), pedestrian issues, and generally just an overall lack of patience. Reminds me of the time someone decided to honk at the car in front of them that was waiting for pedestrians to cross - myself, significant other and 2 dogs included. I told the guy to calm down, he started talking shit, and somehow the bag of dog poop I was taking to the trash can miraculously made its way through his open drivers side window and landed in his car. Guy was clearly in such a hurry but then had time to get out and try to physically engage but thought different when my dogs started growling. First smart thing he did during that entire exchange.

I take the Bus and there are too many stop signs in Hoboken. Every block. They need to put in traffic lights. The Bus is trying to keep to a schedule and with traffic they are always behind.

Iâve seen so many people ran stop signs and not even notice when a pedestrian is trying to cross. So many bad drivers, specially the uber and lyft drivers. Now the delivery bikes are out of this word dangerous, one almost hit me on fourth and jefferson about 3 weeks ago.

Yeah, I donât know what all these people are talking about. All I see is cars stopping for pedestrians anywhere near crosswalk in Hoboken.
As a pedestrian I actually get annoyed that they stop and wait so long, I wish they would just go through when Iâm not even in the crosswalk yet1

There are some notorious intersections that seem worse in bad weather.
I actively avoid crossing Clinton at 4th for this reason after I had 11 cars ignore me in the rain.

Added issue is that pedestrian has the right away, but I have seen some people just donât even look (moms included), and just walk on out. 90% of drivers donât know this rule, so on top of a blatant disregard, they donât know the rule, which is compounded by people not looking themselves.

The daylighting at intersection for pedestrian safety has had the opposite effect. With the increase field of visibility at the intersection drivers don't bother to slow down unless another car with the right of way is approaching the intersection.
and some SOBs just like to play chicken with pedestrians. I love the stop/roll/stop waiting to see if I'll give them the right of way which is legally mine [edit] when I am already crossing and in the intersection

Itâs legally yours if youâre in the crosswalk. If youâre not in the intersection and the driver doesnât have a stop sign you donât have the right of way. You approaching the crosswalk is not your right of way. Thereâs also a no darting rule which means you joggers cannot be halfway down the block and run into the intersection expecting a car to stop. Most of the pedestrians donât even look up to see if a driver is gonna stop for them. Never in my life have i seen the stupidity of Hoboken pedestrians and I grew up in Brooklyn and work in Manhattan everyday. You guys are a different level of stupid

i think most are just rolling stop signs. cause itâs sometimes hard to see since pedestrians are crossing at all angles. however as someone that walks all the time there are guys that drive the sports cars and blast the music that just give no fucks they are the minority though.

Lately I've noticed the cars pulling all the way up to me (like blocking the intersection) as I am in the crosswalk so they don't have to wait a second longer- specifcally on the 9th and Madison corner by shoprite, love it, feels super safe in the moment.
