Awkward space help!

We moved into our house 6 months ago and I’ve been racking my brain on what to do with this awkward space above a closet. What do you guys suggested we do to fill up the space and bring some color? l

In your place I would completely "close" it with some fake wall and have a proper looking column instead of keeping this surface.

Close off the wall with shelving on the hallway side.

There is a closet door there, it might not work

Sorry I didn’t phrase that better.

Shelves where the black is, but it’s blocked off on the back and side so it matches what’s existing.

Do you have kids or cats?

If kids-nothing

If cats- a cat bed or cat tree

As a collector of vintage objects this "awkward space" would be wonderful for display

I love colorful pottery. I would probably put a large statement piece with a few (not too many) smaller pieces around it. Put whatever you love? It’s your house. Do you love an obscene amount of family photos? Frame that bad boy up! Do you LOVE legos? Put a beautiful Lego piece there. You get the idea….

I would frame it in and from the second floor add doors and make it a storage closet> drywall and tape and paint and it will look like the wall goes all the way up from the living room and stair but from the landing a couple doors!

Set up a turntable and make that your pseudo DJ booth. And no I’m not joking.

Place a large piece of sculpture or other art there.

I would leave it alone. I would also try to neutralize the little balcony opening as well by painting it to match the walls.

Potted plants or a cat

What is it?

Can you continue the wood up to that ceiling? Then it can become a wall of art.

Since you can easily access it from upstairs without a ladder, I would be inclined to use it for plants, which would would add color, and something like pothos could trail over the side towards the closet door.

Baskets. Possibly greenery IN a basket. Large ceramic jars?

Get some nice, wool blankets with pattern. Fold them and store them there.

Beautiful ivy plants and maybe a wooden sign that says something lovely. Like “it’s so good to be home” etc

The only solution for me is plants and lots of them. You can access them from the upper floor. Sterren makes a nice pendant grow light that can be plugged in. Not expensive to buy or use. If you are concerned about water damage, make a wood or painted tray that is completely sealed. Or water your plants in the bathtub like me.

Custom build storage unit. Some open shelving for displaying plants and stuff, and some closed for storage.

If you could find a light fixture the same as in front foyer hand it above this space in place of light fixture in ceiling near the area . Makes it more intentional . It could be LED on a dimmer to adjust the light as needed . Even nite light late at nite
