Crosspost [Crosspost] I'm a former British diplomat, Traitors contestant and now geopolitics columnist for The i Paper. Ask me anything!

Hi Reddit, I'm Alexander Dragonetti. I used to be a British diplomat but you probably recognise me from the 2025 series of The Traitors UK. I'm also now a regular contributor to The i Paper's opinion section, writing mostly on geopolitics and the Ukraine war: https://inews.co.uk/author/alexander-dragonetti

I've also started a TikTok account where I make "diptok" videos: https://www.tiktok.com/@alexanderdragonetti I'll be responding to some of your questions in video-form as well.

My diplomatic work took me across Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Ireland, where I led crisis response teams following the Nepal earthquakes, worked in high-risk environments including Gaza, and engaged with remote communities in the Pakistani Hindu Kush.

So, with geopolitical tensions simmering across Europe, the Middle East - and indeed the world - Redditors, ask me anything.

I'll be jumping onto answer your questions tomorrow afternoon.

AMA: I’m Garrett Graff, 9/11 and national security journalist, Historian & Host of "Long Shadow." I’m here to talk about the 25th anniversary of 9/11 — ask me anything!

Hi! I’m Garrett Graff, Pulitzer Prize finalist, historian, author, national security journalist … and host of the Peabody Award-nominated podcast Long Shadow. I’ve spent much of the last 25  years covering the 9/11 terrorist attacks and their legacy. My oral history of 9/11 ‘Only Plane in the Sky’ was re-released in August with new essays including an oral history of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

For the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Long Shadow is releasing a new, special episode (out today!) about the legacy of 9/11. It traces how the government’s response to September 11 led to the buildup of a massive federal police force, an apparatus that was overtaken by a wave of corruption and criminality amounting to one of the most destructive scandals U.S. law enforcement has ever faced.

It explains precisely how we got to this moment, where masked federal agents are shooting American citizens in the streets.

Join me live at 3pm ET / 2pm CT / 12pm PT TODAY (September 1) for this AMA. Here is a timezone converter to help you find the time of the AMA wherever you are.

During the AMA, I can answer questions about …

  • The events of 9/11
  • The legacy of 9/11
  • The creation of the Department of Homeland Security, Border Patrol, and ICE
  • How to reform ICE and get accountability for its actions
  • And more…

By the way, if you see responses from u/Longlead-journalism, don’t worry – that’s the award-winning journalism studio behind Long Shadow. They are going to make sure I get to as many questions as possible.

Be sure to check-out Long Shadow on your favorite podcast app.

Looking forward to chatting soon!

Crosspost AskHistorians crosspost AMA: I’m Ronald “Ron” M. James, historian and folklorist with a recent book integrating the two fields

AMA: I’m Ronald “Ron” M. James, historian and folklorist with a recent book integrating the two fields

I’m Ron James (AKA Folklore), the author of the newly released The History of Cornish Tradition: A Folkloric Journey. This book presents an opportunity to consider how oral narratives and cultural practices change over the centuries – see its introduction here. Four hundred years of primary sources from Britain’s far southwestern peninsula document cultural survival, change, and innovation. In the minds of many, folklore conjures images of hoary traditions that transform slowly if at all. Reality is more dynamic, inviting a blend of historical and folkloristic perspectives. This is the second time I have combined history and folklore to this extent: a previous book, Monumental Lies: Early Nevada Folklore of the Wild West (2023) tackles questions about how folklore emerged and evolved amid the mining frontier. The History of Cornish Tradition is extremely expensive, but fortunately the University of Exeter Press is offering a 30% discount – use AMA30 (good through the end of the year) when checking out. In addition, Monumental Lies is also available with a 30% discount – use UNP2026 (good through 30 September 2026) when checking out.
