I'm planning to buy a gaming laptop mainly to play games (I really want to get back to league so anything that can handle it smoothly because, based on my experience, the requirements listed on their website are not that accurate). I also really want to start taking programming seriously. I know the fundamentals of python and java, and I want to expand my skills, as i want to have programming to fall back on if accountancy ends up draining me. Thank you so much!

Sharing this because I think a lot of Filipino professionals applying for remote jobs need to hear it: ask about the salary early, and get it in writing.

I recently interviewed with Workstreet for a Trust Services Engineer role. It’s a cybersecurity/GRC position focused on security questionnaires, evidence, policies, working with SMEs, and frameworks like SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, CMMC, NIST, and FedRAMP. During my first interview with the recruiter, salary came up. I told her clearly that even though I’m based in the Philippines, I currently work directly with a US client through an EOR and earn around $3,000/month, so my expected range was $3,000–$3,500/month. She told me that was within their range, so of course I continued with the process.

I went through another interview with the Manager I would potentially report to, then a final interview with the Senior Manager. Both went well. The final interview especially felt like we were already talking beyond the basic “can this person do the job?” stage. The Senior Manager told me that if I joined, I would be working under the same Manager whose team I had just interviewed with. She also confirmed whether I was okay working the graveyard shift and shared some of their upcoming plans for the Philippines, including how local holidays may eventually be handled through PTO. We also talked compensation again. I explained that now that I understood the role better, I wanted to know if there was room above my original $3,000–$3,500 range for a strong candidate. She said yes, particularly for the Senior level, and her closing remarks were that the team would discuss whether they would offer me Trust Services Engineer or Senior Trust Services Engineer. At that point, I honestly thought things were heading in a very good direction.

Then after the final interview, the recruiter emailed me asking for my salary expectation in PHP. Since the Senior Manager had literally just told me there could be flexibility above my original range, I gave ₱250,000/month, roughly $4,000, and said I was still open to discussing the package depending on the final role. The recruiter replied that my expectation was above the approved budget. Fair enough, so I asked what the budget actually was. Her answer: ₱39,387.90 base + ₱3,050 allowance, or around ₱42,437.90/month total. Yes. Around forty-two thousand pesos. After I had already disclosed $3,000–$3,500 during the very first interview. After I was told it was within range. After multiple interviews. After reaching the Senior Manager. After being told which Manager’s team I would be under. After discussing graveyard-shift expectations and future PH holiday/PTO arrangements. After being told the Senior role could potentially pay more.

And that’s the part I really don’t get. If your approved budget is around ₱42k and a candidate tells you in the first conversation that they’re already earning around $3,000/month and expecting $3,000–$3,500, just say “Sorry, that’s outside our budget.” That would have saved everyone a lot of time. Instead, I went through the whole interview process only to find out later that the recruiter had apparently given me the wrong salary range during our initial discussion. Companies can pay whatever they want, and yes, location-based salaries are a reality. But candidates also have jobs, time, and expectations. The funniest part is I went into the final interview wondering if a Senior Trust Services Engineer could go above $3,500. Turns out I should’ve been wondering whether we were even talking about the same currency. 💀

To fellow job hunters: be careful out there. Verify the recruiter, salary range, contract, and company details before investing too much time. If the numbers suddenly change or the story stops adding up, treat it as a red flag. Some hiring processes are messy—others can be misleading or outright scams.

Nag try ako mag apply sa company ng friend ko which is collections.. The position I apply is "IT" Walang clear na description yung Job Title.

Nung na interview kanina is ang magiging work ko pala is parang IT admin.

1. Mag coconfigure ng firewall like sa mga restrictions para sa client (eto lang yung binigay na scenario saakin)

2. pinapaaral ako ng python, networking, active directory (kung sakaling tanggapin ako since bukas pa final interview ko)

during the interview sa hr tinanong ako kung ano expected salary sabi ko 20k above dahil nga sa magiging roles ko.

after nun sinabi ng hr na if papayag ako minimum wage. sabi ko hindi..

kung kayo yung nasa position ko papayag ba kayo na minimum wage lang or kaya mababa sa asking price ko..

considering na Diploma Graduates lang ako.

pwede na ba siya as stepping stone or apply nalang sa iba like accenture? since eto palang inaapplyan ko hahahaha

I’m an IT graduate who didn’t have the opportunity to start a career in the IT industry, particularly in software engineering, after graduating.

I’m now looking to pursue software engineering as a career and have been working on improving my skills and knowledge. However, since I don’t have professional experience in software development yet, I’m finding it challenging to get that first opportunity.

I wanted to ask if there are companies that offer internships, apprenticeships, or trainee programs for IT graduates/career shifters who don’t have professional experience yet.

I’m willing to start from the bottom, learn from experienced developers, and put in the work. I’m mainly looking for an opportunity to gain real-world experience and finally get my foot in the door.

Any idea po na ginagamit niyo pag nag live kayo ng application ano po ginagamit ninyo na platform been working on a project and the clients need na ma live para maka access sila anywhere sa application nila if mag travel sila pero na hardest part is choosing a platform i want sana yung cheap muna tapos scalable for the future as more client to come. Been using Render but free tier lang medyo mahal din yung pro tier nila kaya nag isip ako anong maganda balak ko sana digitalOcean pero di parin sure talaga, marunong din naman mag AWS pero masyadong magastos rin kasi 24/7 running tapos di ko pa masyadong gamay yung AWS​​​​​​​​​

I am a 3rd-year CS student looking for some advice on a laptop decision.

I currently have two laptops available to me:

HP EliteBook 830 G5 (i5 vPro 8th Gen) — has no SSD, RAM, or battery, but I have a charger and dock. I plan to install a 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB SSD, and an SS03XL battery myself to save on labor costs. Estimated total cost is around ₱10,000–₱11,000.

Lenovo IdeaPad (current daily driver for 6yrs now) — 4GB RAM, AMD A9-9425 processor, 477GB SSD. Works fine for browsing and light CS work but struggles with anything heavier.

I also found an HP EliteBook 840 G7 (i5 10th Gen, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD) on Facebook Marketplace for around ₱16,000, ready to use out of the box.

My primary use cases will be:

- Coding and building CS projects

- Video editing freelance work using CapCut and other lightweight editing software

My budget is tight, so I'm torn between building the G5 for ₱10k–₱11k or spending an extra ₱4k–₱5k on the G7 which is a newer generation and requires no assembly.

My question: Is building the G5 worth it, or is the G7 the smarter investment for my use case?

I’m a 2nd-year IT student, and I feel like our school doesn’t teach us that much. Honestly, I feel like I’m barely learning anything, and it’s starting to make me feel lost.

I’m also worried about whether I’ll be able to get a job in the future if I continue like this. I know I shouldn’t rely solely on school, but I’m not really sure where to start or what skills I should focus on.

For those who are already working in IT or have been in a similar situation, what would you suggest? What can I do outside of school to improve my skills and make myself job-ready?

Kakagraduate ko lang nung 1st week of August.

Three months before graduation, halos every day akong nagpapasa ng applications online. Pero hindi man lang umaabot sa interview stage kasi madalas hindi ako nakakapasa sa assessments HAHAHA. Puro “Unfortunately…” din sa email. Pero madalas ghosted at seen-zoned ang application. 😭

Then, 3rd week of August, may tumawag sa’kin, onsite interview daw.

First ever interview ko ‘to. Binasa ko yung job description, nag-research about the company, nagpa-mock interview pa nga ako kay GPT HAHAHAHA.

I only had my 500 hours of internship experience, diploma and a lot of confidence (and konting kapal ng mukha HAHA). Not from a well-known uni and not an academic achiever. Pero I decided to show up anyway kahit kabado bente.

And yesterday, I signed my job offer. Yey!

May experience naman sa pag compile ng linux kernel, ROMs at open source contributions sa github at ngayon naman ay nagseself study din ng python. Hi! 4th year BSIT student here from QC, and currently looking for companies where I can apply for OJT/internship. Preferably sana yung may allowance, kahit hindi kalakihan, since maliit lang din yung allowance na nabibigay sa akin ng parents ko and I also need to consider my daily transportation and food expenses.

I also want to be honest about my skills. Hindi ako marunong mag-code and hindi rin ako confident sa pag-aayos/troubleshoot ng computers. My stronger skills are more on documentation, creating documents/reports, and UI/UX design. Sa UI design naman, sakto lang din ako—not an expert, but I can use Figma and create basic interfaces.

So I’m wondering, may alam ba kayong companies around QC/Metro Manila na tumatanggap ng OJT students?

And if mag OJT ba ako sa mga BPO companies ano po usually yung mga ginagawa doon?

Hello po, I'm trying to apply for IT Support roles and nagdadalawang isip po ako if it's fine to inlcude in my technical skills the things I had an experience with during my student days? Literal na naging lab activities lang namin sila where we configure this and that, and I'm not that expert with them yet.
