Mod Post [META] [Mod Announcement] How to use this sub - and how (not) to use the [META] Tag

Hello r/ifyoulikeblank!

This is your friendly neighborhood moderator, here with some information on how to correctly use this sub and our title tags, and to address some recent frequent misuse of the [META] tag in the sub.

If you are new here, please read this post before posting. If you have been around a while, please take a moment to refresh yourself with some of our rules. :)

There are two - and only two - kinds of posts allowed in this sub.

Our sub is NOT a self-promotion vehicle for new artists or creators, and it is NOT a general discussion or song/movie/actor/music/genre identification sub. We are a media recommendation sub, and we have very specific guidelines for posts to be allowed here.

There are two ways to format your post titles here, depending on if you would like to ask for recommendations or to give others recommendations with your OP.

If you want people to recommend things to you:

The “IIL” acronym stands for "If I like..." - to be used in a way that states "If I like (this song) because of (reasons,) what else will I like?"

This is the most common type of post here, and most OPs should be using THIS format for their posts! Your title must use the [IIL] tag - It will be reported by our frequent long-time members here if it does not, and it will be removed if you use the [IYL] or [META] tags instead of the [IIL] tag.

The title should look like the following example:

[IIL] The song (name a song you like here) because (give a specific trait about it you want suggestions to include), [WEWIL?]

  • The "WEWIL" acronym stands for "What else will I like?”

  • Your example should include something specific about the song that you want to hear more of in the music recommended to you. (Without details, no one can give you appropriate responses and you won't get suggestions that you will actually LIKE.)

If you want to recommend media to others that you think they'll like based on some other piece of media that is similar:

The “IYL” acronym stands for "If YOU like..." - to be used in a way that states "If you enjoy (this song) because of (reasons,) you might also like this song."

This tag is not for self promotion. This SUB is not for self promotion. If you post your own material here, you WILL get banned, without warning. No exceptions, no appeals.

The title should look like the following example:

[IYL] The movie (some movie similar to your suggestion) because (your reason you think it is similar to your recommendation), [YMAL] (this suggested movie).

  • The "YMAL" acronym stands for "You may also like..."

  • This is a VERY uncommon post type in this sub, unless people are attempting to subvert rule 2. We ALWAYS look at these posts, but if we miss one, our long-term members sure won’t - and they WILL report you for a rule 2 violation and you WILL be banned.

  • If you are suspected of passing off your own media as an "I found this new media and you might like it!" post, that will earn you an immediate permanent ban from the sub for trying to subvert rule two.

Please note that moderators look at your posting history across Reddit, and if you are spamming your own stuff elsewhere, you are going get a ban here. Period.

How to use (and how NOT to use) the [META] tag:

The [META] tag is NOT so you may post off-topic posts or general media discussion posts or music identification posts, or anything that is not an IIL or an IYL.

The [META] tag is only to be used if you have questions or comments about this subreddit itself, and how it operates on Reddit.

Examples include suggestions for new rules here, asking for clarification about a rule here, suggesting a new theme, stickied post, etc in the sub, or asking the moderation team any other question about this sub - not asking the members here about media.

Thank you all for reading, and for your help in ensuring these rules are adhered to. We are a million-member (and counting) sub with a VERY small moderation team, so your help in following these rules and reporting rule-breaking posts to us is greatly appreciated!

Have a wonderful day :)

YouTube/Streaming IYL strangely committed youtubers?

Upvotes

I’m just gonna be real with this one. I’m sitting on my couch desperately just wanting to laugh until I can’t breathe and in my experience the place with the highest success rate for me is YouTube. I seem to have run into a bit of a dilemma, however. I have run out of content to watch in my free time. I have never ceased to laugh at a JennaMarbles video, but I have watched pretty much every single one more than I can count. I find the idea of doing or purchasing something incredibly unnecessary absolutely hilarious. Whether they spend $1000 on something just to inevitably say that it’s terrible and go in depth on a review of it or they spend 14 hours on a stupid project that nobody asked them to do. I really like Danny Gonzalez and Drew Gooden for these reasons, but I feel like I have exhausted their channels as well. Ted Nivison, especially his video where he watched every single Barbie movie was great for that same reason but again feels like an exhausted resource. Maybe I just watch too much YouTube. Maybe I should just start watching TV or go outside . But sometimes I feel like I just need something that is fool proof to make me laugh. I almost never use Reddit but desperate times call for desperate measures. Please if you’re anything like me, I need some recommendations. And even if you are not, give me the video or any piece of media that has made you laugh the hardest. I need to go to sleep, but I feel like I can’t until I get a good laugh in.

Games IIL games where the setting almost feels alive in a supernatural sense... WEWIL?

I have two examples, no particular genre:

1.) Silent Hill 2 --- the town itself almost feels like its own character. Simply navigating it in solitude, with no enemies, you still feel like you're not alone. The town actually feels more alive than the entities you see in it.

The ambient sound design gives you a creeping feeling that the town is breathing... pulsing... and it pulls you in like a force of nature. It feels alive in its "normal" foggy sequences, and the otherworld kicks it up a notch, as the rusty color palette gives the town an illusion of looking fleshy and organic in some areas.

2.) Disco Elysium --- this theme gets extra emphasis when your Shivers stat is high. The stat gives Harry a more spiritual connection to the town of Revachol. The voice of Shivers personifies the city. Shivers makes the town breath and gives it a beating heart, providing interesting little details that makes Revachol feel like a living entity.

-----

More recommendations would be very appreciated. I'm mostly focusing on video games, but even mentions of songs, movies, or books would be nice.

I want to clarify that I'm not looking for media that makes it blatant that the setting is alive (example: Monster House). I'm looking for media that makes the setting feel like an entity, even if it's not confirmed to be truly alive. I want to feel it in the atmosphere of the media.

Music [IIL] Raye's music style

I'm really obsessed with Raye's new album lately, i really like the mix she does with the instruments in an orchestra and in a jazz way (in this case, i'd like to mention Laufey too, because she's also on my repeat because of it)

Other than that, i really like her teatral way of singing and of doing music (like on her new album, where it's basically a storyline) but mostly, i really like her kind of rap way (I don't really know if it's rap, and probably not, but i mean the speed up lyrics, i do love them)

So, are there any other singers around that have this vibe? Or maybe just an album or a few songs

Misc. [IIL] What’s the most unique / sui generis work of fiction you’ve ever come across? Looking for things like Birdman, Blair Witch or Brave New World

I’m looking for works that feel genuinely different from the usual. It doesn’t matter what the genre or format is: horror, comedy, romance, action, drama, anime, manga, novels, short stories, films, whatever.

A couple of examples of what I mean: Birdman or The Blair Witch Project for film, and Brave New World for literature. Not because I’m looking for anything similar to these, but because they each do something that feels distinctly their own.

What I’m after is something that really stands out from the norm, whether because of its structure, premise, writing, worldbuilding, characters, or just the way it approaches storytelling.

It can be weird, experimental, unconventional or difficult to categorize, but I’d like it to feel cohesive and intentional rather than being strange for the sake of being strange.

What are your picks?

I’d prefer if the music is something standalone as opposed to pieces from other soundtracks, but this is optional

Music [IIL] Lighthouse Keeper by Cross Canadian Ragweed and other songs where the guitar solo is the whole point and the vocals are just setup, [WEWIL?]

I could use some help scratching a musical itch I’ve had for awhile. I've been building this playlist for a while and I keep getting suggestions that are close but not right, so let me try to be precise.

What I want: the solo is the destination. The song sings for a couple of minutes, hands off to the guitar, and never takes it back. In practice that usually means live recordings, because the studio versions cut the outro short.

The rest of it, which is where most suggestions fall apart:

- One guitar out front. Not twin harmonized leads, and not a great guitarist serving somebody's song.

- The line has to be pretty. Melodic and composed, something you could hum back. Not pentatonic licks over changes.

- Gritty tone, but every note lands clean. Not a wash of distortion.

- Sad or heavy mood. Cheerful kills it immediately.

- Not weepy either. Pretty with weight behind it.

- Vintage vocal styling throws me off. Doesn't have to be new, but it can't sound like 1972.

Tempo and genre don't matter at all.

What's working (in order from completely satisfying to satisfying, but could be closer):

- Cross Canadian Ragweed, Lighthouse Keeper

- John Mayer, I Guess I Just Feel Like

- David Gilmour, Comfortably Numb (Live at Pompeii)

- Joe Bonamassa, Mountain Time (live)

- Dire Straits, Sultans of Swing (San Antonio, 1985)

- Dave Matthews Band, Cortez the Killer (Central Park, 2003)

Already tried and it didn't land: Free Bird, Texas Flood, Blue Sky, Runnin' Down a Dream, Slaves & Bulldozers, Rival Sons "Torture," Derek Trucks "Sailing On," Jeff Beck "Cause We've Ended as Lovers," and anything post-rock.

I’ll confess that some of these song resonatin recommendations were AI generated. I could really use the help of some humans.

Music IYL "IF YOU LIKE"

This is a message to all IYL/IIL users, but particuarly those interested in music discourse and discovery. I found a platform called platnm where people can put out requests for music recs and put each other on ... basically works like this page except you can click on the songs and listen in your streaming platform or add them to ur queue and listen at a later time. just keeps track of all the recs in a nice way and wanted to share in case anyone has been looking for something like this

Music [IIL] E1 mockingbird, without E1

I’m from the US and don’t know much about drill. I do know these songs are kind of a meme but I think they are unironically catchy. And I dig the singing part. I want to know about more songs with samples of similar pop songs and with similar singing into rapping parts. Have a good one

Music [IIL] As Embers Dress the Sky by Agalloch

Specifically, I am wondering if there is any music similar to the acoustic section from 3:48 to 5:59. I really love the vibe in that section. Especially when it is just the electric guitar and acoustic guitar playing together. Is there anything else that is similar?

Music IIL "ADHD" by Kendrick Lamar

I just love the beat of the song, it's super soothing, especially when I'm down

I also love the song, despite the fact it's literally about how the youth generation is all fucked up and has "adhd" as in a short attention span, just going from one vice to another to distract themselves from how fucked up the world is, somehow it gives me hope? like, bittersweet type feeling, and i like that. not doom and gloom, not blind optimism, just, "the world is what it is, we're fucked as a generation, but for now, let's just smoke some good weed"

Music IIL Are You Lonesome Tonight?- Elvis Presley, what other songs will I like?

I LOVEEEE “are you lonesome tonight” by Elvis, (unsure if this is originally his song but it’s the version I’m familiar with)- not necessarily a huge Elvis Presley fan but the heartbreak conveyed in this song rocks me to my core every time I hear it! The line where he says “you lied when you said you loved me, and I had no cause to doubt you, but I’d rather go on hearing your lies, than to go on living without you” is so damn human. I love it. I just like music that is sad/hopeless in that way from time to time, so please, if you know any other music with lyrics that convey this feeling of loving someone with desperation, lmk!!
Thank you!

Music [IIL] Glitchy, dark, weird, experimental pop-adjacent music like Baths, Son Lux, Trevor Powers, and Yeule (and some hyperpop) [WEWIL]

Golden examples for what I'm looking for is specifically stuff like this:

Baths - Yumyucker
Trevor Powers - Plaster Saint
Yeule - Electric

Hyperpop is fun but often doesn't get weird enough, ironically enough.

Not required:

horror games

pixel art

graphics that are too outdated

Preferred:

- a deep storyline with a profound impact on the world

- it would be preferable for all the main character’s actions to take place alongside their companions

- comic-style graphics (not essential)

- a modern setting

tx all for your replies

Music [IIL] i lovee lullaby of the new moon from hoyo-mix and nod-krai but i love the lullaby more, does anyone know other songs that are like it?

i don't mind the language, though i do think latin is super pretty and i would love a female vocalist, with similar instrumentals, i don't really know how to explain it.

i've looked online for some time but didn't come across any that i really liked, so yeah 💔
