First of all, looking for movies that are visually breathtaking and creative to the max. EEAAO never slows down, it’s unapologetically weird and chaotic in every frame, blending these ridiculous scenes together with heartfelt and deeply human moments. Every frame is a marvel,
With deeper themes whether it be: feeling lost as a young(ish) person or within a complex relationship with your mother/husband/daughter/yourself, having regrets about one’s life, struggling to find purpose, being lost and depressed, but also of acceptance.
I deeply enjoy movies that blend humour with deeper themes, satires (one of my other favourites is Dr Strangelove). Over the top but unmistakably human.
Characters that are not your typical leads. I loved Waymond and Evelyn, theyre complex and wonderful, and just so human, strong in their own ways. I’ve similarly really enjoyed Marge in Fargo. Older characters as leads are welcome.
Visually ive really enjoyed The Fall visually and partially for Lee Pace’s character who’s also dealing with depression and the feeling of loss of purpose. Riders of Justice similarly features Mads Mikkelsen as a character struggling with denial and grief. Another Round, etc etc, you may see a pattern. I also loved Melancholia for its raw portrayal of depression and amazing acting. Movies that deal with characters who struggle to either find a meaning within their lives, being lost, or just in emotional turmoil over their relationships with family.
I want to be touched by a movie that’s so beautiful, and which will reopen these wounds that people tend to carry within themselves all their lives. It would help that it be ridiculous or funny, however it may serve the movie, but I’ll take a drama. Please let me know!
