M1 > M1A, specially when "compliant".

Not when mounting of optics/accessories is considered, imo. The garand really hamstrings you on the former and the M1A has more options for the latter. A bit easier to get short M1As too.

I have a busted-up right thumb and struggle with loading clips, so maybe I’m a special case; but I’ll go with the mag changes on an M1A.

Hmm, I think you probably could keep up a higher overall rate of fire with an M1 rather then an M14. You could get the first 20 off faster with the M14, but after that you're playing catch up to the Garand. Mag changes on the M14 are a bitch, it doesn't matter how good you are with it, it'll still be slow.

With 10 rounders, an M1 is unquestionably faster then, which further reinforces my point that an M1 might be faster then a M14 with 20 rounder

"Compliant" also isn't legal nationwide since some places ban the M1A no matter what

Basically, and anywhere a m1a is compliant a mini-14 should be as well, or some variant of a bufferless ar with a shotgun stock if not a grip fin conventional ar.

The reloads aren’t that bad, just takes some practice with the 20s. Plus you’re doing less of them.

I don’t know if I agree with mag changes being all that difficult in normal circumstances. 10 round mags are gonna be quite goofy and slower than an m1, but the 20 round mags aren’t that tricky on the m14.
