My pet peeve with cyclists.
No licensing, wanting to be both a pedestrian and a vehicle whichever it suits them.

Guys on the internet will always say 'cyclists' like it actually describes a group of people. In European countries almost everyone is a cyclist at one point or another. We don't group all 'car drivers' into one category because obviously that includes a huge variety of people. A little timid grandma driving a car and an Italian macho do not have any driving behaviour in common. Same with cyclists. There's no "cyclists want this" because cyclists are at least a billion people in the world. People complaining about 'cyclists' always just show that they are primarily car drivers and don't have critical thinking skills as they will see people on two wheels and think. "Ah yes, those types of people." It's like talking about "blue shirt wearers" or "backpack carriers". It's the dumbest shit.

Downvoted for speaking the truth. Car brain is rife.
Just highlight the idiocy by grouping all motorists together
2
u/BidSuper7102 3h ago edited 3h ago
You just did what I accused them of doing just in reverse. Calling it car brain and grouping all motorists together is exactly the kind of uncritical thinking that's so dumb. Can we not try to make everything on the internet a bipartisan issue? We're literally all on the same roads and want the same thing: To just be safe and arrive on time. Cyclists and cars are not natural enemies. Yet people have twisted their brains into thinking that they are, it's completely absurd.

They are factually far less likely to result pedestrian deaths and serious injury.
Check which developed Nation has the highest per capita death rate of pedestrians. It ain't the Nations that ride bikes to and from work.
One Nation leads a pack by far and it's not even close. USA.

u/Key_Check5753 12h ago
Ye, they probably wont kill them, but a lot of people get serious neck, back, and head injuries from being hit by cyclists. Just because it isn't instantly lethal doesn't mean it's okay.

What do you think getting hit with a bike and going down on asphalt would have done?
There's a gulf of bad fates between nothing and death.
0
u/Ad-fundum69 16h ago
I always elbow punch cyclists when they don't stop, making them crash but "less likely to result in death or serious injury".
And when they try to scrape their sorry ass off the pavement go full loud rage at them so they're also "less likely to have permanent hearing damage".
More people should do this, maybe then cyclists will finally learn that obeying traffic rules is worth it.

They can break their bones and set them disabled life time tho
1
u/o7_HiBye_o7 9h ago
And could kill them. Sure, nit at the same rate- but a fist fight can kill. A slip and fall can kill.
I'm all for bikes doing their thing, but it is INSANE the amount of laws they break just in one trip from A to B.
Stop signs, street lights, crosswalks are completely ignored by most of the ones I see while working. They will just zip through an intersection like they are immune to death themselves.
BE SAFE PEOPLE.
1
u/Brilliant-Muffin-879 13h ago
Are you sure it’s the same people? Are you saying every cyclist yells at drivers or what?
-1
u/Ok_Water_4601 17h ago
This is clearly an engineering failure if you open your eyes and look.
No pedestrian light? No rumble strip to alert bicyclist of a cross walk? Two directions of travel complicating crossing for pedestrians?
This is an engineering failure not a bike rider failure. But I understand that urban planning isn't most people's forte.
2
u/Ad-fundum69 16h ago
I live in Amsterdam, traffic lights for cyclists might just as well be Christmas decoration, because that's what cyclists think they are.
This behaviour is pure disregard for the rules. They don't care, simple.
The markings on the road should be plenty information. And most of those cyclists have had advanced college degrees too, some even underway to their university lectures.
They're not really stupid, they just act like it.
2
u/Ok_Water_4601 16h ago
Then put license plates on them and ticket them.
Simple. Compliance is forced. If compliance is optional, people won't do it. No matter if they are in a car, bike, or foot traffic. That's human nature for a vast majority of the world.
However, at the end of the day, it is a factual statement that bike riders breaking traffic rules, especially around pedestrians, is significantly LESS deadly for obvious reasons.
This post isn't some sort of "gacha" towards bike riders and communities with lots of them.
3
u/Ad-fundum69 16h ago
Sure, a license plate for bicycles, that would surely help, but that's not a law change people are going to take lightly.
But it would definitely solve the problem.
2
u/Curious_Contest_3767 7h ago
Actually if the cyclists would open their eyes and look, they'd see the clearly painted crosswalk with people very clearly trying to cross. In fact, at one point in the video a couple of them actually do stop to let pedestrians pass because they aren't shitheads.
2
u/weberc2 17h ago
“pedestrian light”? Pedestrian should be the default mode. Cars and bikes can yield to pedestrians.
0
u/Ok_Water_4601 16h ago
Fine. Then make it PEDESTRIAN "default mode" this is still am ENGINEERING FAILURE not a Bike Rider failure.

Yanks in the chat talking about "bad design" and the need for more signage. This is the UK and the rules regarding zebra crossings here are drilled into all road users and (fittingly) black and white. If someone is crossing, waiting at, or even APPROACHING one of these bad boys, you stop. The mob mentality cyclists are absolutely at fault here.
3
u/RollerDude347 4h ago
Ah, see, this explains it. I was looking at this like, "why would they stop though?" You're the first comment to explain that this is a standard road rule to me. I for instance, would be a very confused tourist is someone stopped to let me cross here.
I do still think it's a bad design. If these are tourists they'd have no reason to think they should stop.
2
u/flipadoodlely 8h ago
100%. I'm a Brit living in the USA and the drivers here honk at people for crossing at marked locations. Drivers and cyclists are at fault.
1
u/Crazy_Plum1105 6h ago
As a British person yes BUT, as a Londoner people don't get these it's super annoying. I think it's like the new highway code about pedestrians going straight having priority over cars turning into the road (badly phrased, I don't drive) - there seems to be a lot of confusion.
I often stop at these and then have to say 'no no, you have priority you should cross now it's fine no just cross I can wait please cross' until they walk over it
1
u/Rumpus-Time-Is-Over 6h ago
If the rules are drilled in yet it’s still not working, it sounds like bad design.
Blaming all the cyclists may make you feel superior but it doesn’t solve the problem.
2
u/ThomasJamesRidgewell 6h ago
Perhaps you're right. Short of requiring a cycling license (which would be extremely British of us), I can't think of a better way to ensure everyone's safety than some hand-holdy signage. As a cyclist myself, I come at this with embarrassment, not superiority. I collided with a pedestrian doing exactly this as a teen so it just infuriates me to see grown adults who should really know better doing the same.
1
u/Crazy_Plum1105 6h ago
Honestly idk how you fix it. Bikes going 20mph inches away from people who can jut out almost instantly, OR, you do 80kg bikes being queazed by 2 tonne buses.
0
u/GCSS-MC 1h ago
Yeah, wtf are they talking about signage and lights? You can see those stripes AND the pedestrians from a ways away.
1
u/MysticalSushi 39m ago
There’s stripes for every crossing in the US. It’s not like cars stop during a green light just because there’s “zebra stripes.”
5
u/TheHylianProphet 21h ago
I don't know where this is, but everywhere I've been, a crosswalk is accompanied by stop lights, stop signs, something to give pedestrians the opportunity to cross, rather than just trust that traffic will even notice them waiting. This just seems like poor design to me.
1
u/Conscious-Map6957 13h ago
How is a stop sign going to help?
1
u/MysticalSushi 37m ago
Because you’re supposed to stop at a stop sign .. “Zebra stripes” don’t have any stopping power in the US. They’re all accompanied by a stop sign
1
u/Conscious-Map6957 7m ago
Ah I see. This isn't true everywhere in Europe tho, and this vid doesn't look like it's from the states?
0
u/BidSuper7102 10h ago
Where I live crosswalks are almost never accompanied by stop signs etc because that is entirely redundant, the crosswalk already clearly communicates to stop, moreso than any sign could. But over here people also almost always stop for pedestrians.
0
u/jmcdon00 3h ago
Might be true in big cities with lots of traffic like this, but it would be a big undertaking to add light to every crosswalk. About 90% of crosswalks in the US are uncontrolled.
1
14
u/DuhRJames 22h ago
Lots of cyclists failed to adhere to the rules, however, in this case I'd say it's more on the city for poorly designing this crosswalk. There's obviously lots of bicycle traffic, yet this crosswalk has no signs or lights.
5
u/Maximum_Boros 20h ago
The bad design doesn't do anything to mitigate that every single one of these cyclists is a piece of shit who should be ticketed and not allowed to ride.
2
6
u/BruinBound22 22h ago edited 21h ago
Yeah exactly there isn't good design so let's all ignore the crosswalk!
It's extra funny because you hate cars for bullying cyclists when it's the exact same scenario as this.
1
u/Tuco_Angel_Eyes 19h ago
I hate cars, because they weigh 15 to 30 times my weight, and can easily kill me.
1
u/Gawehay 18h ago
Cycles can be dangerous, but they are nowhere near as dangerous as cars. Plus they're a lot easier to quickly maneuver.
You should be vigilant with either but significantly more when driving a car to anything on the road
2
u/random_wonderings 18h ago
They also take a fuck-ton less effort to stop at a pedestrian crosswalk.
1
u/BruinBound22 17h ago
True true. For these reasons they shouldn't bother stopping for pedestrians at sidewalks....?
1
u/Admirable-Trade-8454 12h ago
they should stop. it should also be better designed. I mean it's got a big cyclist forward symbol painted on the pavement right before the crossing. mixed messages there.
imagine if there was a crosswalk right in the middle of the road with no signage. couldn't blame cars for not seeing it
0
u/Gawehay 17h ago
That's not true. The opposite. Ya gotta press on both front and back wheel breaks, put your foot down to balance, and then find your footing on the pedals& regain the momentum when you're going again. Vs. just pressing on the brake pedal in a car without changing your position or anything.
But that's not the point. The point is that cars are significantly more dangerous than cycles. Incomparably so. So when I drive, I feel much more responsible for the safety of anything on the road. A lot of ppl forget just how dangerous cars can be because they're so normalized. And I'm a great driver 'cause I'm also a cyclist (so I'm empathetic to how rude cars usually are) so very aware & not reckless. As all drivers should be. I'm a careful cyclist too, but again, the danger just doesn't compare.

u/Ok_Water_4601 22h ago
This is the correct answer.
This is poor engineering and urban planning.
Give the bikes some rubble strips and that will force them to slow down.
3
u/Copious-Spirit 21h ago
Needs a flashing light pedestrians can activate.
Just like motorists: the cyclists are focused on their vector with tunnel vision; seemingly oblivious to anything else, or they're just following the leader and not making their own decisions.
4
u/MajesticDisaster3977 18h ago
Why is spending additional tax-payer money for blinking lights the only answer here?
There are marked and unmarked cross walks all over the place that don't have high-vis flashers or other assistance devices that need to be treated with respect. Some bog-standard cross-walk signs are all you need here. They don't need to blink. They just need to exist, because there doesn't seem to be any other landmark except for the paint on the ground (which can be hard to miss at speed with other cyclists in front).
If this were at a street-corner, I wouldn't even suggest the sign, as those typically indicate a cross-walk anyway. It's expected. If you make drivers/cyclists expect blinky lights at a cross-walk, they turn their brains off if the lights aren't blinking, or when they come across other cross-walks.
1
u/Copious-Spirit 17h ago
"Turn their brains off," kinda like what the video depicts?
2
u/MajesticDisaster3977 14h ago
Exactly like the video, however, I don't see a cross-walk sign. Some of the cyclists stopped pretty hard because they registered the fact it's a cross-walk too late.. others just blow past... I see cars do it too.
2
1
u/OldTimeConGoer 8h ago
We have cycle lane lights just outside where I live, red and green synced with the adjacent main road crossing lights. Cars, buses etc. stop for the road lights. Cyclists just pedal through the cycleway lights when they are red because, well, they're cyclists.
1
u/Excellent_Coconut_81 15h ago
And what an earth traffic lights would change if nobody would obey them?
2

1
u/krostybat 3h ago
Agreed. That crosswalk needs some spike that deploys whenever a pedestrian approach, also a thin but strong metal line at neck level, with some red flags on it to be fair.
0
u/No-Mix7970 20h ago
Not only that. There is a bus stop where passengers have to cross the bike lanes to get to.
0
u/Huitlacochilacayota 19h ago
In my college campus, bicycles had the right of way because they outnumbered people walking. Sometimes, using common sense works

u/ComplaintTop2008 23h ago
This never happens and most cyclists follow the rules of the road.
Or so I'm told. Constantly.
3
1
u/Own-Eagle-2135 17h ago
in SF, they use "the rules of the road" as weapons.
you want them to stop at stop signs or red lights? they all do and they spread out to block the entire street so that no one can pass them. then they are extra careful to look both ways and get ready and then pull away extra slowly.
the choices are to let them do whatever they want or to suffer because they follow every single rule as slowly as possible.
2
u/ComplaintTop2008 7h ago
In SF they also do that repulsive night riding thing where they create their own Chinese LED parade and block traffic for 10 minutes.
2
1
u/Hefty_Loss5180 21h ago
What happened to fucking waiting until the way is clear, giving you enough time to cross? They aren’t obligated to stop if there isn’t a sign or a light telling them to stop.
2
u/clutzyninja 14h ago
Most places I've been, you're always obligated to stop at a pedestrian crossing if there isn't a light
2
u/koknesis 13h ago
What country are you from? In most of the world marked pedestrian crossings unequivocally give pedestrians the right of way by law. Traffic is supposed to stop and give way as soon as the pedestrian is couple steps from the crossing.
1
u/bookends_fourteen 15h ago
Where I live, they would be legally required to stop and are breaking the law by not stopping. Unsure what country this is, but don't assume all road rules are the same.

On the one hand, this is amazing to see so many people utilizing bikes as transportation. On the flip side, there are also a lot of e-vehicles speeding past the pedestrians. If this was in the USA (obviously not from the excessive reliance on environmental friendly transportation as well as lack of obesity) many of these cyclists would be riding horizontally after a few determined pedestrians decide to cross.

u/dompipeinmi 18h ago
Should be a bar on each side of the crosswalk that comes up. That would put an end to their shit.

Here in the Netherlands you just start walking and the bikes will reduce speed or swerve around you.
The problem is that coming to a full stop on a bike sucks, so the etiquette is to avoid that at all cost.
The law of having to come to a full stop at a crossing is a leftover from car laws. That said, e-bikes have ruined everything and it's now much more dangerous because the e-bikes are faster than the riders' brains.

My city has cyclists die every single week by being hit by cars. It’s of course sad, but as someone who’s never gotten in an accident, not even a ticket, I’ve almost hit many cyclists because they think stop signs at a 4 way stop don’t apply to them, even if another car is already driving through. Especially on the rentable bikes, people are essentially asking to get hit by cars.

Yes. They're vehicles. Vehicles must yield to on-foot pedestrians.
2
u/IndoorSurvivalist 22h ago edited 22h ago
Yeah, I think the issue is that the bike path is too heavily used. Even on a road, if a huge wave of cars were coming I wouldn't expect them all the stop. I would wait for a gap.
There is such a constant stream of bikes that I assume many of them cant even see, and how are they supposed to see the people waiting behind the bus stop?
If there was a button and a flashing crosswalk, then I would press it whenever I get up to it and at that point I would expect most people to treat it sortof like a yellow and stop if they are able to.
2

u/ChuurDCA 21h ago
What? Even in heavy traffic cars must stop at pedestrian crossings.
0
u/Didmarton 20h ago
In Texas, you yield to someone already in the crosswalk, otherwise pedestrians cross when it’s clear or they have a signal to move as protected.
1
u/fuckcozmobox_au 17h ago
No, let's just let bikes continue on their merry way and fuck over any pedestrians stupid enough to use the crosswalk. Seems fun.
1
u/GodsBackHair 21h ago
Bad design, but much like a street that says ‘must yield for pedestrians,’ you still can’t just walk out into traffic and have the reasonable expectation that all the cars will stop. People still need to watch for their own safety when crossing traffic

u/cesspool4us 20h ago

Going out of our way to get upset I see. The pedestrians are not losing anything by waiting a handful of seconds.
If there is a road with no crossing light to stop traffic, do you expect cars to slam on their brakes when someone approaches or is standing adjacent to the crosswalk?
1
u/Goblinweb 14h ago
In western countries drivers are usually required to yield to pedestrians at crossings without lights.
1
u/Curious_Contest_3767 6h ago
In most developed nations, vehicles are required to yield to pedestrians. Such as when there's a clearly painted crosswalk with people standing it clearly trying to cross the street.
