DISCUSSION Debbie's Smart AF
Debbie sent Nolan shopping so that she could search the house for his suit & according to her 20 mins was all that's gonna take while accounting for him actually buying these items as well which was pretty accurate because Nolan did make it back home in roughly 20 minutes , I guess all the time she saw him on television thousands of miles way & then home in a couple mins helped her timing this perfectly.

Bonus points for her remembering the Earth's curvature.

u/SuplaVegito 14h ago
Does that influence the math ?

u/Real-Deal-Steel Omnipotus 14h ago
More that she kept in mind when drawing on the map. She could've just drawn straight lines, but went a step beyond.

u/zlindnilz 14h ago
Except all the lines are in the northern hemisphere so that bottom one shouldn’t curve the other way I don’t know what you mean by a step beyond

u/Impressive-Carob9778 13h ago
Maybe omniman flies with a curve

u/CyberGraham 11h ago
It's natural to have a slight curve

She's Asian , Mark's lucky he's half alien & got bigger responsibilities otherwise Debbie would have destroyed him seeing his grades

Debbie's been running Viltrumite logistics in her head since the pilot fr

Strongest for a reason yk she keeps them in check

While she never really gets sidelined from the story (besides the space arcs but that applies to all Earth characters) I do miss her S1 arc where she has a larger role in the plot investigating Nolan.

Don't worry in future we'll get alot of that

The fact he needs 5 minutes to get to Italy means that Viltrumites cannot travel faster than light at will. Nolan travels 21840 km/h on earth at his fastest. Which is Mach 17.687. That said it is significantly faster than the Mach 3 immortal.

Maybe he intentionally flies slower as to not disrupt the planet too much?
Or something
814
u/Martyrlz 17h ago
He accelerates and decelerates slower to not destroy the groceries
25
u/Connect_Bee_8464 15h ago
true but like realistically wouldn’t the groceries get destroyed anyway in that speed even if he’s flying slower
44
u/Remarkable-Cabinet85 Markus Sebastian Grayson 14h ago
Art made a carry bag for them for such purposes yk even their civilian clothes are made by Art because we see Mark and Nolan in those as well besides their suit travelling vast distances in minutes
4
u/Ofek_Shapira 10h ago
Forces are only due to acceleration and air resistance, so supposedly if they are in a container then just flying at a high speed won’t create any forces

Very likely yes. The smart way to do it would be to fly to space, go to the location as fast as he wishes and then land. We can clearly see Nolan going fast enough to create fireballs by superheating the air around him so he'd def have to hold waaay back if we was flying in-atmosphere. He'd also have to slow down on the descent because if he goes down at hypersonic speed and comes to a stop right above wherever he wants to go that shockwave trailing behind him is still gonna hit the ground really hard (this applies to planes too, so he gotta be careful with that)
29
u/-S-P-Q-R- 16h ago
Yep; compare to how fast he was flying on Flaxa, plasma wave gets generated, wipes everything out
17
u/ImfromKanyeWest 15h ago
We saw what would happen if he would travel at those speeds in low orbit of a planet with the flaxans, total nuclear annihilation
10
u/QuestionablePotato42 15h ago
Yes as we all know well from Superman if you fly around the planet too fast you will go back in time
5
u/KeyserSozeBGM 15h ago
Def this. On the alien planet he flies so fast it destroys buildings just flying by

Maybe he had a lot on his mind. Like when you drive home from work with the stereo off just glad to be out of there.

Bruh I if I hypothetically have a tough spec sportscar and my wife asks me to get groceries then I ain't ripping that shih to the max just to get sum eggs. 😭
Similarly if I can walk to the store why would I sprint like Usain Bolt for no reason.
43
u/Remarkable-Cabinet85 Markus Sebastian Grayson 16h ago
Indeed , Nolan is simply not going as fast he can because there's no need for it
55
u/FTaku8888 17h ago
Space travel is probably much faster, and he is definitely flying at safe speed to not create winds that devastate countries. I do agree that he isn't hitting light speed buttons explanation is like saying my car can only go 65mph since that is what I legally do on highways
17
u/geek_of_nature 16h ago
Yeah it makes sense that he can go much faster in a vacuum. He doesnt have to worry about wind resistance, and like you said the disruption he'd do going that fast.
6
u/GeneralBrownies 13h ago
I thought it was also stated that it takes a bit of time to get up to those speeds as well. Even if he was flying as fast as he could he'd probably get there before reaching his fastest speed also he needs to slow down and not break shit when he gets there.

Up front caveat that the space scale stuff in Invincible just straight up doesn’t make any actual sense.
He wouldn’t fly anywhere near light speed in the atmosphere of a planet he’s not trying to actively destroy because bad things would happen.

29
u/devdude25 16h ago
He has to not go the speed of light on Earth to you know not kill everyone...
Remember the Flaxon planet...C'mon man
8
u/whatnwherenow 17h ago
That assumes that he reaches his top speed though. And not just on a casual flight to pick up dinner.

6
u/Pun1shbear 13h ago
Here is a good example why he should not fly at lightspeed, even if he could: https://what-if.xkcd.com/1/
Or: what he did to Flaxa.

u/Sweaty-Campaign-320 You, Dad. I'd still have you. 16h ago
Gravity and air friction plays a major role in them flying on a planet too.
I still don't think viltrumites are anywhere near lightspeed, but they can definitely travel faster in void space.

u/xX_Flamez_Xx 7h ago
Idk maybe traveling at the speed of light on a planet is not the smartest choice compared to doing that in space.
5
u/GrammerG0D 16h ago
It's not all viltrumites. Thragg so far canonically is the only one we've seen actually go FASTER than light speed. He's basically teleporting if you're watching in real time.
Thragg tracks a light speed ship through space and smashes through it WHILE it's going light speed. Need I say more?
3
u/Awkward_Goal4729 Battle Beast 15h ago
They all can do that, Thragg just has faster acceleration. They can infinitely accelerate in space
1
u/GrammerG0D 14h ago
You're creating a paradox by saying they are all the same speed. If Thragg can accelerate faster, then he hits light speed faster, which means he's getting to his destination faster than everyone else. Means he's faster my boy.
2
u/Awkward_Goal4729 Battle Beast 14h ago
I’m saying they all can go faster than light (even though it shouldn’t be possible), not that they’re faster than Thragg
2
u/Engetsugray 11h ago
Powerscaler logic moment. Focuses hard on the numbers without thinking about their context.
2
u/Dontpercievemeplzty 10h ago
Except he didn't need 5 minutes. He chose to take 5 minutes so as to not destroy his clothes, the groceries, the atmosphere, humans, infrastructure.
He flew to Thraxa 65 million light years away in about a week. Viltrumites are absolutely far past FTL.
1
u/Loose-Run-7008 6h ago
But that’s in space. They definitely can’t go FTL in combat or in atmosphere. They simply can’t react that fast (Nolan and Mark couldn’t even react to Thragg ripping off Thaedus’s head, I don’t think Thragg went FTL right there but I could be wrong I guess)
Powerscalers will use the FTL feat to say they can fight that fast which doesn’t make sense, from everything we’re shown they can only go that fast in space where they can accelerate indefinitely, they definitely cannot fight that fast, react to things that fast, and obviously if they go fast enough that could essentially ignite the atmosphere and cause huge destruction (see Omni Man’s little genocide detour/adventure with the flaxans)

Dude is probably trying not to reach relativistic speed in Earth’s orbit
1
u/Bologna_Slamwich Conquest 9h ago
Do you know what would happen to the atmosphere if he flew too fast?
1
u/QuantumMemester 9h ago
I think they can keep accelerating to reach above light speed in a vacuum, and we saw what a higher speed Nolan did to the Flaxan homeworld so they can definitely go faster than he did. That is likely a “safe” speed for flying around
1
u/collonnelo 8h ago
If he traveled light speed in atmosphere he may kill everyone from the raw Shockwave of that speed, considering he is a still massed individual. Iirc planes arent allowed to hit top speed until they hit a certain altitude as to prevent noise pollution. Id wager Nolan doesnt do the same until he hits a vacuum like space
1
u/codegavran 3h ago
We literally see Nolan destroy a civilization simply by flying sufficiently fast through their atmosphere. Get your LARP power scaling tf outta here.

1
u/Ofiotaurus 15h ago
He probably just avoids flying too fast on earth for strategic reasons (show he has limits) and to not disturb earth’s atmosphere and residents too much.
1
u/Fc-chungus The Technicians 13h ago
I kinda think this means that in a vacuum they CAN accelerate infinitely to the point they can go FTL, but in atmosphere they can't accelerate that fast due to drag.
That or going FTL for a 5 minute flying trip would be unnecessary
1
u/Gualty3 17h ago
Woah that's some cool math
8
u/-S-P-Q-R- 16h ago
The math is cool but it doesn't prove they can't travel FTL. They can't travel FTL on Earth without vaporizing their air in front of him creating a plasma wave. He was however flying FTL when he was destroying Flaxa, and did have a plasma wave in front of him.
