Help yourself first by buying a decent hunter controller. Orbit is bad, and you're riding an ancient model.

It may not be the controller. While I don't disagree that OP should ditch that thing, that may not solve the problem.

You need a multimeter and to test the resistance between each valve wire and the common wire. If you get no resistance, the wire is cut. Also, you should check the power of each valve terminal. Turn on zone number 1, touch your leads to the common and the #1 terminal. If you're not getting 24v it's the controller. If you're getting resistance AND proper voltage, you might need to call a pro.
