Hi everyone, I’m a journalism student set to graduate this Fall. I feel like I’ve built a solid portfolio over the past 2-3 years I’ve been in this field, but I feel so unprepared to actually start applying for jobs in journalism.

I also feel that my portfolio might be a little behind compared to others, especially since I’ve only worked in print media when my goal is to move into broadcast.

Are there certain platforms many journalists use to apply for jobs? Are there any tips you guys have to offer for before I submit my job application?

Hi all, I hope this is not an all too common question, but I'm curious if trying to become a journalist at 31 is a complete nonstarter given my age and state of the field. I've worked as a freelance writer and have gotten some bylines in small to mid sized left wing media, like Novara Media, the Drift, etc, but that has been polemical writing + cultural criticism, not reporting.

I've done what's felt like a thousand different careers: nonprofit worker to book editorial to union organizer. None have been particularly fulfilling and since I was in school I've had a fascination with journalism (did some school paper writing) but was convinced by mentors to not seriously pursue it given the difficulty finding work in the field. Now though I actually really regret not pursuing this passion, and yet I don't want to make another shift on a whim.

If you have any thoughts/advice for an online stranger, it'd be very appreciated

She produced the Academy Award winning documentary "The Panama Deception" (1992) which was hugely impactful, and one reason H.W. Bush lost the election. It's got to be one of the most consequential documentaries out there. I know she started a center to educate and train docujournalists, but the website seems to be inactive for about 20 years.

Does anyone have any info on why she went inactive?

I’m not sure how anyone feels about this and perhaps I’m in the minority here. But …

I hate the word “content” when it comes to journalism. It strips away what we do as journalists, and it reduces our work to some soulless corporate product.

Really poor form, and another misstep in a long line of bad decisions and worse management at the BBC.

I started this job six months ago. I knew it would be a lot of work, right. I’m editing three titles with some crossover. What I didn’t know was how inexperienced exactly half of the reporters are which means in one title, I have to be the lead reporter. As in, they didn’t know what a deadline was when I started. Some of them still don’t understand it.

In another title, the best up-and-coming reporter just handed in her notice.

I’m sitting in McDonalds eating chips in lieu of having a panic attack, which is what I actually want to do.

I’m overworked to the fking bones, I’ve dropped my standards to about as low as I can stand, I’ve cut the literal number of pages in the paper down, but I’m going to be dead in a year. I’ve delegated, which had alternately left me with a spelling mistake in the masthead, and pages not sent to the printer, because that’s what happens if I don’t do almost literally everything myself.

Management are all What About the Website?!?!?!

I can’t quit or change jobs as I’m in the middle of moving house so my finances need to stay steady and stable. I don’t care about their fucking clicks.

What can I claim back against tax? Internet and mobile fair enough, but travel to and from interviews, Otter.ai subscription, podcasting equipment etc?
