Built a Google Maps–native navigation app for the KTM dash — would you pay a subscription for it?

I've been building a companion app for KTM's connected dash (the 1290/1390 SD, 890/790 Adv, etc. — anything running the KTMConnect TFT nav) that uses Google Maps as the actual routing and map engine instead of the stock Mapbox (in India at least) provider. Turn-by-turn, lane guidance, live traffic, and search all come from Google, projected onto the bike's dash exactly the way the official app does it.

Before I go further I want to gauge whether people would actually use this, because it can't be free — more on that at the end.

What it does today:

  • Full turn-by-turn on the dash — turn icons, distance-to-turn, street names, ETA, distance-to-destination — same BLE protocol the official app uses, so it works on the stock cluster
  • Google Maps routing with live traffic, so reroutes actually reflect current conditions
  • Google Places search — find a destination by name, not just coordinates
  • Multi-stop route planning with drag-to-reorder stops
  • Save routes and favorites; favorites (Home, Work, and your saved places) show up in the dash's own favorites menu, and picking one on the dash starts navigation from your current location
  • Mirrors phone notifications (maps apps, messages) to the dash, with your own guidance always taking priority
  • Ride history with GPX export
  • Overspeed alerts using the road's actual speed limit
  • Handlebar volume controls for voice guidance

Why it's better than the official app for a lot of riders:

  • Google Maps data — better POI coverage, better traffic, better search, more current maps in most regions than the stock provider
  • Faster, more predictable rerouting
  • Route planning that doesn't fight you — real multi-stop editing, reorderable stops, saved routes that persist
  • Notification mirroring done sanely — third-party nav apps get suppressed while your Nav SDK is guiding so the dash never shows conflicting turns
  • Active development — I'm adding dash features the official app has had for years (recent-destinations list, POI-by-category browsing from the dash, handlebar menu navigation) and shipping fixes fast

The subscription part — being upfront:

This will be subscription-based. Not because I want recurring revenue for its own sake, but because using Google Maps as a native, embedded map and navigation provider is a paid licensing cost to Google — every route calculated, every map tile, every search, every place lookup is billed. A free app can't absorb that at any real user count. The subscription exists to cover the Google platform cost per active rider and keep the lights on for development.

I don't have a price to announce yet. What I need first is a sense of how many people would genuinely sign up for this.

So: if you ride a KTM with the connected dash — would you pay a monthly/annual subscription for Google Maps navigation on your cluster instead of the stock experience? Drop a comment (a simple "yes / maybe / no" + your model helps), and tell me what feature would make it a definite yes.

KTM 390 Adv 350cc – Test Ride Impressions

I recently took the new KTM 390 Adventure 350cc (Ebony Black) for a test ride. Just a quick mention, I had test-ridden the Suzuki V-Strom about a week earlier. There was a difference in engine smoothness between the two bikes.

**1) KTM 390 Adv Engine**
The engine felt noticeably rough/buzzy to me, particularly compared with the V-Strom I had ridden recently. I am not sure whether this was simply because the test bike was relatively new and still needed to loosen up, or whether this is simply the characteristic feel of this engine.

**2) Engine Heat**
The second thing I noticed was the amount of heat coming from the engine/radiator area. After returning to the showroom and stopping the bike, I could clearly feel the heat on my legs — even though I was wearing jeans. The fans were doing their job, but the heat was very noticeable on the legs.

**3) Helmets**
The showroom sales assistant also told me that KTM does not provide any helmets with a new bike purchase. Is that actually correct?

I am also interested in hearing from existing 390 Adventure owners. I appreciate your feedback.

2025 Model OEM Skid plate Back Bolt SKU

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi,

I installed the Outback Skid Plate on my 2025 390 Adv R. It uses the bolt that came with the bike's original skid plate at the back (see photos). Today, it broke while I was riding. I am trying to replace it, but I'm unable to find the OEM part number for that bolt. It is not the long one that goes through the engine frame; it's the smaller rear bolt that holds the skid plate. Any help would be great. All I get from AI is the front engine-mount bolt, which I do not need. The photo shows the edge of the broken bolt.

New rider here (bike is 2 days old, ~350 km so far) — need some guidance on chain lubrication

Hi everyone,

I recently bought my first bike, and it's been about two days now with roughly 50 km ridden so far. I came across a few YouTube videos suggesting that it's good practice to lubricate the chain after every 500 km or so, but since I'm completely new to this, I'd rather learn from people who actually have hands-on experience than just go by what I saw online.

I'd really appreciate it if some of you experienced riders could help me out with a few basics:

Which lubricant should I use? (wet lube, dry lube, wax-based, etc. — and any specific brands you'd recommend for a beginner)

How much should I apply? Is there a general rule of thumb, or does it depend on the lube type?

How often should I actually do it? Does the "every 500 km" figure hold up, or does it vary based on riding conditions (rain, dust, terrain, etc.)?

Is there a proper technique/process? For example, do I need to clean the chain first, let the lube sit for a while, wipe off excess, etc.?

I want to take good care of my bike from the start and avoid any beginner mistakes, so any tips, personal routines, or even links to good resources would mean a lot.

Thanks so much in advance for your time and help!

Hi all. New to me 2023 390 Adventure. Previous to previous owner had this mount. I was thinking of putting an Android Auto or GPS in this spot and I can't seem to figure out the best way to mount it. Wonder if this bracket could come off and something else be installed. Thanks

KTM 390 Adventure X 2025 leaking fluid?

Thumbnail
gallery
24 Upvotes

My KTM 390 Adventure X 2025 is around 1 year old and has done ~9,000 km. I noticed some fluid/oil dripping from underneath the bike.
The larger amount on the floor is from several days, while the dark spot in the last photo is what accumulated in just the last 2 days of parking.
Has anyone faced something similar? What could be the source, and is it safe to ride to the service centre? Also, any idea about the likely repair cost and whether this would be covered under warranty?
Would appreciate any help identifying what this could be.

Hey guys, planning to buy my first bike.

Is there any way to reduce seat height of KTM Adv 390 from 825mm to around 800 mm with minimal compromise in riding experience.

Need Advice 390ADV 350CC

Currently have CB350.

Took a test ride of 390ADV (350cc).

Low end torque felt low, I stalled the bike multiple times at crawling speed. Benefit of doubt 'I might have misjudged the clutch play'

If genuinely low end of this bike is weak, share tips on how to handle it in slow traffic and city commutes.

AUX Lights Suggestion

I am planning to install aux lights on my Adv 390X+.

I want something that go under the headlights where there is some space, which will also make them subtle.

I have seen some riders drilling through that panel to install the lights.

Would really love some suggestions.
