I've seen the claim going around that King's Field was the first true 3D RPG out there. The best way to prove a claim is true is by trying to disprove it and so I tried to find one that preceded it and couldn't find anything. Of course Ultima Underworld was the first RPG in a 3D environment but that still used a lot of 2D spritework for enemies and objects.

Does anyone know of any that came before it or is the claim true?

Today I completed KF: The Ancient City after seeing some of a longplay on Youtube and becoming enchanted with it. It's a beautiful game and I really enjoyed it, but I wanted to aim for 100% completion on my file and found a strange bug that stymied that by preventing me from getting all the spells. When I went to clean up the items and crystals at the end of the game with help of a walkthrough, I found I was somehow missing the spell Tornado. I thought for sure I had acquired it, and sure enough, when I went back to the egg mines secret room the pot was smashed and the crystal wasn't there. Stranger, when I went to the Mansion of Howling Winds to get crystal 5 for Freeze, the crystal that was supposed to grant me Freeze gave me Tornado instead!

Is this a known bug, and is there any way to resolve it? I have wind cutter, life shield and ice clad, so it's not like it's hiding in some other unacquired Wind Crystal.

Finished the ancient city recently and wanted to remember it by drawing two of my favorite characters, Septiego and Aeaine.

I'm struggling to figure out what Curse even does. I found the wiki and that Breath/Blessings cures it, but that begs the question... What does it do if uncured?

I absolutely loved the first two games. They are definitely on my top 10 favorite games list. However, the first time I tried the third game I had a miserable experience.

The love I felt when I saw the much bigger game world and more actual story being in the game was quickly replaced with the disappointment when I realized the game is just one straight line.

Even the very first game had an interesting interconnected level design, but for some reason here they completely ditched it. The main fun point of these games is definitely the exploration, since the combat sure as hell isn't the main selling point.

But what really killed it for me was the dozens of insta kill traps. In multiple areas you need to find a hidden wall in order to progress, but those same areas also happen to be filled with multiple death traps. So rather than exploring the map, it becomes a matter of trial and error to remember where every trap on the level is.

The game was just so poorly designed, which is a real surprise since the first two were fantastic. I just tried playing it through again, only to get stuck at the starting village for an hour, to then discover that a random enemy in a corner of the map drops the key that's the same color as the floor, and I instantly remembered why I dropped it the first time.

It's stuff like this that completely ruined what could have been the best game in the series. Oh well, I guess I'll go off and play Shadow Tower now. Sorry for the rant, but I'm too salty.

Hey, so I am not good at long from posts, so I am gonnanmake this short. I have fallen hard for this game and in extent the series and would like to get a tattoo custom done for it, unfortunately I am at a loss for ideas. Any help would be appreciated and while my first time with these games is now over I cant wait to get back into all of them more.

I am blind playing the US King's Field 1 an accidentally softlocked myself. I have raided some a soldier garrison and went really deep into it, then found a minecart that leads into the Big Mine. I can't go back since I ran out of keys and the doors closed behind me. And no, I can't teleport out of there because I didn't know how fast travel worked.

Every time I ride that goddamn minecart I get killed by something and I can't even control it. Then I googled and realised that I went there too early and should have slain some Termite Queen in the mines and find a big fountain???

I am sorry if it sounds silly, I really wanna like this game, the music and atmosphere are fantastic, but when it's so open ended how am I supposed to know that I shouldn't go where I went? I don't mind starting a new game, but is there a list of locations I need to find and visit in order not to softlock myself again? Because this experience left me really frustrated.

Edit: Everyone thanks for your help! I started a new game and replaying it with my knowledge from the first run. It's actually going much faster now, and I found a couple of small locations I haven't seen before. Hope I will beat the game this time :)

Hello everyone i am interested in playing all the kings field games and would like to know if there is an easy way to play them on pc i found a few web sites but would like to know if there might be an easyer way in playing them thank you for your help

I have a better understanding as to why this game runs so poorly. The floors and ceilings aren't large planes with a tiling texture, but rather small individual tiles. This approach makes the affine texture warping of the ps1 even more noticeable.

The Sword of Moonlight tool for KFIV is based on tiles, so I assume that the version of SoM they used for the earlier entries works in the same manner.

I read on the wiki that it's in the passage of death but there is also a copy hidden on the right in the entrance of the Verdite Castle but I went there and I didn't find anything

Hear me out because the title alone sounds ridiculous.

I've been brainstorming making my own Field-y game for a long time. I'm always hung up on how to make the game feel different while keeping the essence of combat and exploration similar enough. First person seems like the safe approach, and there's plenty to expand upon without going third person. However, I've recently thought of a third person King's Field experience being somewhat interesting, using tank controls.

For an example:

WASD/Left Stick - Walk around relative to the camera's forward direction. A and D do not influence the camera, they strafe your character.

Mouse/Right Stick - Turn camera, one fixed speed.

Attacking can still be performed while turning just like in KF (no locked animation to one direction etc...)

I would like to also retain the visual style, which may clash with the player model as the screen is pretty small already, so zooming the camera out may not be the move.

Thoughts?

I'm currently researching how to implement the pnach patch from this link into the actual game image, into the executable file.

I've already gotten the analog sticks working on the actual console.

My plans include making a menu for adjusting speed, acceleration, and everything else included in the patch in pause mode, with the modded settings saved to the memory card.

And next, I'm planning to patch the HUD/UI shortcuts to use several shortcuts for items during the game, triggered by pressing DPAD.

If you want to try yourself here's v0.0.1 (Google Drive) patcher for SLUS_203.18 executable,
and patcher for writing that executable back into the game ISO.

You have to have latest python installed in your system. Google it.
You have to open your King's Field 4 USA ISO Image,
extract SLUS_203.18 executable and put it in one directory with ISO.
Put .py scripts along with executable and ISO,
launch patch_kf4_usa_analog.py,
then patch_kf4_iso.py,

If nothing breaks, this will add Move\Strafe to Left Stick, and Camera on Right Stick.

Right now it have bug with stick reading (no deadzone implemented), so it constantly strafes right and turns camera right with very low speed.
Im aware of this and already know how to fix this.

This game is for sure a banger. I went in dry, no guides. My favorite character is Cartman. Currently searching for 4th seal (earth) got crescent axe, blood mask, full plate tower shield and just got fireball and the razor things. How am I doing kings?

Is it possible to dump the assets from KF mobile? I’d like to remake in a different engine as a proof of concept.

My 4DS just arrived and the very first game I wanted to play on it was Kings field: The Ancient City. And I did just that. I can’t wait to beat this game again after 2 years. Definitely my favorite game of all time. (PS. Game looks 10x better in person, my camera isn’t the best)
