I'm sort of getting tired of policing all the internet bravado, "come see me in real life," and bringing arguments in from other subs. You're not that cool. Nobody is.
Post kung fu. Talk about kung fu. Critique kung fu. Ask about kung fu. It's not complicated.
Next time I wake up and see 18 reports about some argument from the USMC or bullshido subs or whatever, I'm banning the lot of you for a month.
If you want to argue or "prove it, here's my address" crap, do it in the DMs. It doesn't belong here.
NOTE: Don't be a dick. If someone posts a video and you respond with "wow you suck and you're fat" you're getting a ban for however long we feel like. Be better.

The request has been made time and time again, your voices have been heard! In this thread, let's get well-written answers to these questions (as well as additional questions if you think of any). These questions have been sourced from these to threads: here and here.
I apologize in advanced for any duplicate questions. I'm doing this during mandatory training so I can't proofread a ton haha.
For the format of your post, please quote the question using the ">" symbol at the beginning of the line, then answer in the line below. I will post an example in the comments.
What's northern vs southern? Internal vs external? Shaolin vs wutang? Buddhist vs Taoist?
Can I learn kung fu from DVDs/youtube?
Is kung fu good/better for self defense?
What makes an art "traditional"?
Should I learn religion/spirituality from my kung fu instructor?
What's the connection between competitive wushu, Sanda and traditional Chinese martial arts?
What is lineage?
What is quality control?
How old are these arts anyways?
Why sparring don't look like forms?
Why don't I see kung fu style X in MMA?
I heard about dim mak or other "deadly" techniques, like pressure points. Are these for real?
What's the deal with chi?
I want to become a Shaolin monk. How do I do this?
I want to get in great shape. Can kung fu help?
I want to learn how to beat people up bare-handed. Can kung fu help?
Was Bruce Lee great at kung fu?
Am I training at a McDojo?
When is someone a "master" of a style?
Does all kung fu come from Shaolin?
Do all martial arts come from Shaolin?
Is modern Shaolin authentic?
What is the difference between Northern/Southern styles?
What is the difference between hard/soft styles?
What is the difference between internal/external styles?
Is Qi real?
Is Qi Gong/Chi Kung kung fu?
Can I use qigong to fight?
Do I have to fight?
Do Dim Mak/No-Touch Knockouts Exit?
Where do I find a teacher?
How do I know if a teacher is good? (Should include forms awards not being the same as martial qualification, and lineage not being end all!)
What is the difference between Sifu/Shifu?
What is the difference between forms, taolu and kata?
Why do you practice forms?
How do weapons help you with empty handed fighting?
Is chisao/tuishou etc the same as sparring?
Why do many schools not spar/compete? (Please let's make sure we explain this!)
Can you spar with weapons? (We should mention HEMA and Dog Brothers)
Can I do weights when training Kung Fu?
Will gaining muscle make my Kung Fu worse?
Can I cross train more than one Kung Fu style?
Can I cross train with other non-Kung Fu styles?

In 1851, members of the Chinese junk Keying performed unarmed routines, pole weapons, paired combat and sabre-and-shield methods before audiences in Victorian London.
A report in The Illustrated London News preserved this remarkable demonstration, albeit interpreted it through the prejudice and limited understanding of its correspondent.

After finishing school (at 18 years old) I would love to learn Kung Fu in an Authentic School in China for 6 months.
Studying mandarin and learning about the chinese cultur, while training every day is mandatory for me.
Training / living alongside chinese students in a smaller school in the mountains would be the ideal scenario.
Does anyohne has experience or recommendations for my plan?
Thank you so much! :)

THE XINGYI SPEAR IS COMING TO HUA JIN!
In-depth lessons on the Xingyi Spear are now being introduced to the Hua Jin Online Learning Program.
The spear is the key weapon of Xingyi Quan and, in many respects, the very essence of the art. Many of Xingyi’s barehand methods, mechanics and expressions of power were derived from its spear methods.
These new lessons will present the weapon in depth, covering foundational training, body mechanics, power generation, techniques, drills and the principles that connect spear practice directly to Xingyi’s empty-hand methods.
If you want to understand Xingyi Quan at a deeper level, the spear is indispensable.

Trying to grab a fast punch usually doesn’t work—by the time you reach for it, the punch is already gone.
In Xingyiquan Monkey, the response is not a sequence of separate actions: grab, push, then pull. Instead, contact with the attack triggers a connected whole-body movement. The hands, arms, torso, and footwork respond together to redirect the punch and enter at the same time.
The key is not chasing the opponent’s hand. It is training the body to react as one connected unit so defense, control, and entry become part of the same movement.

So what are some methods you guys do to develope your Short Power?
Ive been doing the gong li for feeding crane as well as other exercises and im curious as to what you guys do.
One thing I like to do as a fun extra practice method is to one inch punch (or palm) open heavy swinging doors.

I would love advice to help build strong foundations in traditional Shaolin kung fu and Taijiquan.
Adult: 35-year-old German-Canadian woman looking for advice and guidance to build strong foundations, personal practice, and be strategic with progress in mind while doing so.
///////
For the past 18 months , I wake up at 5 a.m. most weekday mornings (Monday through Friday) to take a two-hour class from a 77-year-old Cantonese gentleman and a 50?-year-old lady who grew up in Hunan Province.
My friend has recently joined me. While I was being pushed before, this has accelerated, as I feel my teacher has now made the mental justification, more or less, for the two of us to get semi-private lessons during these group lessons.
This is also because the classes are at my local Jewish community center, and we drastically lower the average age of the students, who are all retired doctors. That is not to say that some of them are not strong and committed and have been working with my teachers for 25+ years. (George, as he is known in my household—fucking George—leads our stance work drills. George is 92. I told him to his face—and he laughed at me—that his name is a swear word in my house because I cannot match the strength of his legs... yet. 😅😉)
I went to the Shaolin Temple in Manhattan and was asked if I had trained with them before, based on some of the ways I move. I reiterated multiple times that I did not. I just wake up early to be yelled at multiple times a week.
And, partly due to language difficulties, my teacher is also not very big on explanations. I feel very scattered and overwhelmed, and I am not quite sure how to structure my own practice outside of class and cross-training to set me up for success in these arts.
Legit. I am on this Reddit and also have gone through many posts and FAQs , as well as have been trying to chip away my confusion, and I feel like I have only increased it as as well as my frustration.

I just started Feeding crane and have done what my teacher says are the Gong Li (or Kung Li, Im unsure what the spelling is), and they are the basics for training power generation, and "Finding the thunder". A lot of it is training your short power, and they are k8nda fun to do.
And so im wondering, does your system have similar methods and principles in your basics? I'm curious and want to know what kind of basic exercises your styles do.

I took this video of my Shifu, Ni Rouhua, demonstrating the Long Feng Shuang Jian when I was learning the set. The video is slow by design as he was using it as a tool to help me learn. I thought it might be fun for folks looking to play with these weapons at home 😁
