Fixing Straps

Hello, I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask but is there any way to fix the straps on this chestplate. I got it from mytholon, it's actually meant to be the replacement one and the straps were just as bad on the last.

Is there a way to make it at least somewhat more wearable without completely removing the rivets and straps or completely replacing them?

What are the issues you’re having? Kinda hard to make a suggestion if you don’t say what you want to change.

I want to be able to wear it lol. The picture speaks for itself, no? The straps are completely bunched up and have front plate at a near 45 degree angle.

The straps are soft leather, though. The front plate has a curved bottom, and probably won’t sit straight up on its own.

So the picture doesn’t really show me much. Can you show us a picture of you wearing it? So you can see what issues it’s giving you?

I’m not sure. I’m on my phone and the ability to post pictures is there for me. Sorry, I’m not really sure what’s up with that.

But it sounds like the issue you were having was “the plates of the cuirass are crooked and asymmetrical, so they don’t sit properly in my body”. Is that a fair way to word it?

Pretty much yes, but it's due to the straps on one side being all bunched. I think they were riveted without being fully extended, so it curls up when I'm wearing it. Or one is simply shorter than the other.

What do you mean by “bunched up”? I’m pretty sure I have the same cuirass, and the straps on mine are soft leather. So it doesn’t seem like the straps should be able to hold a strange shape while the plates are pulling on them from both sides.

If it’s that they’re different lengths, you can confirm that with a measuring tape, just check the length of each strap. If one’s longer than the other, you might be able to shorten it with some leather working. You could cut the strap in the middle, and overlap the two ends so that it’s the same length as the other strap. Punch some stitching holes through both pieces, and stitch them together with some sturdy thread.

Looking at it in the picture, it’s also possible that the plates themselves are bent, leading to the straps being held at a weird angle. To test this, try holding the plates up against your front and back respectively, and see how it feels when they’re in the place they’re supposed to be. If you notice that a plate isn’t sitting properly against your body, you can use some percussive maintenance to reshape it.

You’ll want to use a rubber mallet, or another soft material that won’t ding the surface of the steel. You can beat the part of the metal and try to force it into the right shape. Depending on where the warp is, you might be able to use a length of pipe that’s roughly the same size as that part of your body, like the shoulder or a portion of your chest. I remember needing to do that to mine, and it got to a place that worked pretty well for me.

By bunched I mean one (right in the picture) isn't able to extend to it's full length. It's always in that tight bunch and folded if I try to wear it.

I believe, not 100% the chest plate itself is fine, there's some space when I wear it but I'm quits a skinny guy and I know they're not made to measurement so it's understandable. Although the straps definitely aren't helping.

I think my best bet is probably cutting the straps like you said. Either way in all honesty I'm not too worried if I end up messing that up because I essentially got 2 of these chestplates for free because both them came defective.

I have this exact chestplate and yeah, the straps on it are horrible The entire thing is made cheap as hell. Unsure if there is any easy way to fix other than completely replacing them.

I've had mytholon armour before- You'll have to replace them by removing the rivets and straps/replacing them if they don't happen to fit you.

I had a feeling. They've just come completely bunched up, I'm not sure if they've riveted it without straightening out the leather fully. Is there a way to soften the leather maybe to try and get it straighter?

You might have some luck with leather conditioner if the straps feel dry/hard.
