news Sharing a major win
The short of it is, I was laid off, very toxic workplace so situation of layoff was shitty too.
6 weeks later I get an offer to join another team at the same company! Making more money! Because this new team treats their employees better. End of story? Not quite..
Old team sees me back in the building. Cannot stand to see me succeed? Worried it will challenge the narrative they constructed? Guilty conscience for the way they treated me? Likely all of the above. So they go to HR… yeah.. I know… trying to get me fired? Get my severence revoked? They’re worried I’m angry? Nah… I’ve moved on! But clearly they can’t and have to chase me with their drama.
End result: HR says I have to work from home. Double win!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
So yes.. eventually it does work out. I was job hunting for well over a year. It’s not the exact outcome I wanted but in some ways better! Keep going. Hope this small big win brought you hope

Talk to an employment lawyer to see what you need to do to cover your ass and hold the company liable in case you're fired or laid off due to politics pulled by leadership at the old team.

Yeah unfortunately this is a possibility but there’s more security in having an unstable job than no job.. I’m going to resume the job search in the new year

No seriously document what you have. If an attorney thinks you have a case imagine how much more $ you could make… but only if you have the proper documentation

Yeah totally great advice. While you got rehired by the company, you still shouldn’t trust them. These days you can only trust yourself. But work for them for a bit and get those paychecks!

The fact that they went out of their way to HR over you just... existing in the building says everything about who actually has the guilty conscience here. You didn't do anything, you just showed up better-paid and unbothered, and that alone was enough to send them into damage control mode.
Getting WFH out of their pettiness is such a perfect plot twist too, they tried to punish you and accidentally handed you a better setup. Congrats on the win, genuinely, especially after over a year of hunting.

Well it might hurt them professionally if they're not present in the office to interact and have face time with senior management

Presumably to keep the peace, but I don’t believe an HR team would do that either. If the other team had an issue, HR team should provide coaching and training to the old team and/or bring it up to a vp that oversees both teams.

It’s a big company and they had some technical reason for it. But my guess is they just were trying to find a way to resolve the “problem”

Somewhat hilarious but also I feel for you. Glad that you're able to stay remote for now. Is this a big company? Sometimes I think about seeing if I can join a different team altogether in the big company I'm in myself.
