Crime and Justice Flock camera megathread

We’re consolidating this topic into a single thread, as the ongoing accusations directed at the mod team have run their course.

To be clear about where we stand: no one on this mod team supports Flock cameras. We are not law enforcement, we are not politically motivated, not maga, and we share the community’s concerns about surveillance overreach even if these systems occasionally assist in solving crimes.

The removals were not about viewpoint. They were about a specific category of comment: those encouraging users to destroy the cameras. Reddit has banned entire communities for less, and we are obligated to remove that content regardless of our personal opinions. This is a condition of the subreddit continuing to exist, not an endorsement of Flock. Additionally there were some very wild conspiracy theories and were asking for discussion not a rabbit hole.

One rule for this thread: do not recommend, insinuate, or hint at destruction as a solution. Everything else is open, criticism, policy discussion, legal challenges, city council contacts, organizing, data on effectiveness. Go as hard as you want within that boundary.

Thanks for being a genuinely great community and good neighbors.

Suffolk approved expanding county Flock cameras from 25 to 60 last August, funded by a $542,500 state LETECH grant, with 16 more planned along state rights-of-way including Route 114 in Sag Harbor and East Hampton Village and Route 25 in Riverhead and Southold.

Your town / village board.

Southold, Riverhead, and East Hampton have all had this on an agenda in the past year. Riverhead signed an agreement with the Suffolk Sheriff in January 2026 giving the county access to town rights-of-way for new Flock installs. Town board public comment periods are open to anyone who lives there, take about two minutes, and go on the record.

Help me identify where I was at

I was around 16, my moms side of the family had invited us to New York, somewhere in Long Island, there was a cvs, a gas station, a supermarket, and a walk away was this pizza place in a strip mall that was supposedly famous it had been featured on tv or something and we even went to this park and it had a gazebo, it was beautiful, we took a train station with some sort of elevated platform/s it didn’t seem like much and faded into just trees at one point. it was such a core memory for me and I’d like to return but, I don’t know where I was, my mother and I don’t speak nor does my family to me.
EDIT: It was amityville

Farewell Tony P. from Spit / Uncle Sams night club

Post image
23 Upvotes

Tony P, co-owner of Spit / Uncle Sam’s in Levittown passed this week. For the thousands of people that went through the doors of Spit over its 16 year tenure, Tony was the face that welcomed you to what would become a legend in Long Island history. Eddie Murphy, Derek Jeter, Madonna, Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls, and a long list of other celebrities partied at Spit. Duran Duran's first U.S. appearance was at the club.

Madonna walked in and handed management a cassette tape. When they asked, "Where's your band", she replied, "We'll have a band in a few weeks". She sang their new song, "Lucky Star" with her brother dancing backup. $3,500 for that show -- A few months later they tried to get her for New Years and she had blown up so much that she no longer performed in clubs. Chris Angel asked if he could perform his close-up magic there so he could hone his craft. Spit was the launching pad for so many careers.

Tony contributed generously to local charities, and left a smile on the people that met him. Farewell Tony, we will miss you.

What’s the trashiest river/creek on Long Island? (serious question lol)

Weird question — I’m looking for a river, creek, pond, or other waterway on Long Island that has a noticeable amount of actual litter/trash in or around the water.

A friend and I want to take kayaks out and spend a day cleaning up as much as we can.

Not looking to shame a town or make anyone look bad — genuinely just looking for somewhere that could use the help and where two idiots with kayaks and garbage bags could actually make a visible difference.

Suffolk preferred, but anywhere on LI works.

Any spots come to mind?

The smallest public library in Suffolk County.

Come on down! But they’re only open Thursdays and Saturdays.

Flies in Nassau Area

I know it's summer and post rain with the humidity the bugs come out but did anyone experience an inordinate amount of flies outside today? My car was covered, not mosquitoes, not house flies but the little fruit fly looking things. Then I was outside for a bit on my patio and they were swarming me. They were all over my screen door too.

I don't live on the water and this is coming from someone who is outdoors and camps so I'm usually used to any bugs but this was crazy. And no, they weren't lantern flies!

It's ANTAGEDON out there!

Me and my neighbors are out killing swarms of flying ants and the little ones. They're flying in the air, but they're on the ground in huge swarms in various spots. White vinegar and Dawn! My wife's out for a walk with the dog and said that they're all over them! Anybody else having a problem?

Where to dance and drink amongst other 22 year olds

Just moved back to Hicksville after being at college for 4 years. Does anyone recommend any bars with good dancing and music where I can be among other people around my age? No cover fee is preferable. Also if there’s any Instagram accounts that post good parties. I miss college. Anything helps.
Thanks 😊

Question Has anyone moved from LI to TX (Dallas/Houston)

Moving from Long Island to Texas (Dallas/Houston) for a job soon. Has anyone made a similar move?

How was the transition from NY to Texas? Curious about the pros/cons, making friends/social life, dating, food, driving/traffic, things to do, and just the overall culture/lifestyle difference.

Also, if you still have friends/family in NY, how often do you realistically visit?

Dog adoption/rescue

Hello!

I’m a current corgi dad who is trying to find a sibling for my boy. I’ve visited a few shelters already, but most if not all of the dogs are either husky, pitbulls or “lab mix”(it’s a pitbull), and while I love all of those breeds, I don’t think my fiance would appreciate how difficult they would make the apartment search if we ever had to move again, and has some past trauma from a pitbull.

I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a shelter, rescue, or even a family looking to rehome a dog that is not a pitbull cosplaying as another breed. Ideally, we’d actually like to assist someone with rehoming their dog, as we’d love to help any pup skip the shelter life entirely, but we are also very open to adopting from a shelter.

For context, I work from home most of the time, when I don’t I ALWAYS come home for my hour lunch to walk my pup. my fiance is a teacher who is always home by 3, so the pup would spend minimal time alone.

If anyone could point me in the right direction, or if you maybe know someone who needs to rehome their dog, please let me know!

Looking For Recommendations for Suffolk dental cleaning without insurance?

I'll be paying out of pocket for a cleaning/x-rays/exam. Looking for recommendations in Commack/Stony Brook area but will travel.

I do have insurance but it's Healthfirst and the dentists I've been to are awful. I'm not sure if I qualify for places that have a "no insurance" plan since technically I do have insurance.

Creeks with water safe to wade in

I love wading through creeks and rivers with my kids when we travel to Upstate NY and New England.

I'm afraid the answer could be depressing on this one, but it's worth a shot: are there any creeks that are safe to wade in on the island? I'm particularly concerned about bacteria levels from fertilizer/pesticide runoff as well as waterfowl poop.

Question Do kids not play football any longer?

Amityville just cancelled its varsity football season because you may kids got injured so they can't field a team. Port Jefferson canceled their varsity season last week because they didn't have enough players. Holy Trintiy canceled their season after a new coach quit and is now taking 2 years to rebuild its varsity program, but JV will play next year.
Last year Southampton schools had to cancel its varsity season, as did the Greenport/Southold/Mattituck district.
Suffolk County allows a school to field a team as long as they have 16 players.

We have amazing biodiversity that we take for granted

I spent a few days in the mountains in Colorado, which made me notice how we're somewhat spoiled here on LI. I have Robins, Cardinals, Blue Jays, a bunch of doves, pigeons, seagulls, and even an occasional hawk visit my back yard in Nassau. There's a local fat racoon that makes himself known. There's a thread about bald eagles, and I regularly see deer when I drive out to Suffolk. When I sit outside at night, the noise of insects is deafening. I know a lot of this is because we live near the ocean that helps support all of this. But being in the mountains in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by forest and not hearing any insect noise or seeing nearly the same amount of birds really made me notice.

Looking For Bargain Movies?

Does anyone know of any movie theaters that are still doing discounted prices on a specific day of the week?

The Glen Cove theater used to run $5 Tuesday when I was growing up and I’d love to see if anything like that still exists anywhere on the island.

Reminder to those with fourth graders

Starting tomorrow, September 1, go to https://everykidoutdoors.gov/index.htm to get your voucher so you and your family can access US national parks and historical sites for free over the next year. New York also accepts the federal pass for state parks and historical sites as well (student and three family members). The fourth grader must be present on all trips.

Recommendation We have LI Retro once a year - is there anything year-round in Nassau for game artists to meet up?

I do music & sound FX and I've been learning to code on Godot lately, made a few small hobby projects. Trying to tap into the local creative scene more and meet artists who do game-style art, pixel art, retro lookin stuff lol

Any spots around Nassau County? Like art nights, coworking spaces, comic shops, retro video game stores, etc. where game artists go?

Went to LI Retro this year and saw a bunch of artists there, curious if there's anything more year-round. If not we should establish it!
