Teens in the sub, reminder of our guidelines whether you're posting or advising +some helpful links!

Due to a recent influx of teens in the sub (happy new year everyone) im reposting our master post on teens do's and don'ts. Links have been updated and a couple new ones added, feel free to leave move ressources in the comments and i can edit them in.

It's almost back to school time, woo! (or not) and like most years that means an influx of teens looking to improve their health, get fitter, or lose some weight, so given the state of some of the posts I thought I'd take the time to go over our general standards and "dos and don'ts" regarding teen posts.

Posting advice for teens:

  • INCLUDE YOUR AGE IN YOUR POST, this is important! You cannot get good advice if people do not know your age, or even better, your age, height, and weight, if you forget, you can edit your post, there is also a "teen" flair you may like to use!
  • Include your medical/family background! Do you walk to school? Are you homeschooled and not allowed out alone yet? Are you dealing with a medical issue that might impede mobility? Do you have a family doctor? Are your parents supportive? Do you have control over your food choices, or do you rely on your parents for meals? Again, this kind of information is very important, the more background info you provide (safely of course) the more our users can help advise or support!
  • Be safe online! Don't trust the word of a stranger commenting on your post! We are not a medical subreddit, we are not a subreddit that verifies members, if someone is trying to convince you their advice is correct, or win an argument by saying they are X medical person or X medical student, this does NOT make their advice more valid than anyone elses here! Whether a lie or not, they are not YOUR doctor, and any advice given should be taken with the same pinch of salt as everyone else's should! Also remember the general online safety tips, do not give out your location, name, school name, etc you can also lock up your chat/direct message feature on Reddit to stop anyone from dm'ing you, please do not post pictures of yourself, especially asking for body feedback, if you have fully clothed (not shirtless or swimsuit or sports bra) progress pics you'd like to share, that is allowed in r/progresspics, but always be weary of posting pictures of yourself online and do NOT trust anyone who asks you for pics
  • include your goals! Are you trying to lose weight? Gain muscle? Improve stamina? Make sure you mention what your goals are, and if you aren't sure, that's ok, ye can puzzle it out in the comments!

Acceptable and unacceptable advice to give to teens:

Acceptable:

  • See a doctor! This should be the first suggestion to anyone underage, a doctor, a dietician, a trainer with teen exp, a school nurse! This should always be suggested, but unfortunately it isn't always possible for people, offering advice on how to contact a doctor, talk to parents about seeing one, or official online medical resources are allowed and encouraged advice
  • Balanced eating! Advice on prioritizing veg and protein, preparing or cooking them, getting the family on board with a shift in foods, meal planning or prepping, increasing water intake, plate division (half a plate of this, a quarter plate of that, etc), all acceptable advice here!
  • Fitness and movement! Increasing activity levels, finding easy or natural ways to add more activity to the day to day, suggesting or helping to guide through active after school activities or finding something the teen might enjoy (people don't suggest fencing enough imo), giving advice for a sport the teen has already taken up and looking to improve on is also fine

Unacceptable:

  • Calorie counting. Do not (NOT) suggest calorie counting for teens! Teens are at a higher risk or developing disordered habits, it's also near impossible for us to give them an accurate goal and there are too many risks at that age if they under eat or become obsessive. A very general idea of the range a teen can consume is allowed, especially when myth busting teens who have been ill-informed
  • Holding teens to adult standards. Teens have different BMI charts, different TDEE calculators, different daily minimums (1800F, 2000M), don't accuse a teen of having an ed because they're normal weight by adult BMI standards, don't tell a teen to cut calories lower because 1800 is probably their maintenance (it is not).
  • Intermittent fasting/actual fasting. It's not tailored to teens, the only person who can suggest this is their personal doctor, not us. We do not allow suggesting full time fasting in the subreddit to anyone, and do not allow suggesting intermittent fasting to teens.
  • Excessive or dangerous exercise. Upping activity is important, doing it in ways that could easily cause injury if unsupervised is not, so intense exercise, things that have a higher chance of causing injury if done incorrectly (ex: jogging, weight lifting) are best to avoid, also remember that things like walking, biking, jogging may not be a safe activity for a teen, some people live in dodgy areas, and encouraging a teen to break curfew, go walking alone, etc can be dangerous
  • fad or restrictive diets. We do not care if you think some of these are healthy or not, they are not for teens (unless their own personal doctor says so), diets like keto, Atkins, carnivore, vegan, any diets that involve cutting out one or more food groups are NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR TEENS IN THIS SUB, that goes for fearmongering "junk"/moderation foods too.
  • Ignoring parents/caregivers/doctors. This can be taken on a case by case, but as a standard, if a teen is here saying "my parents were supportive of me losing weight, but now they don't want me to lose more" immediately jumping on the "ignore your parents" train is no bueno, you do not know this teen, you are getting one side or the story and convincing the teen that they should ignore their parents potentially valid concern because you can see a couple numbers isn't ok. some doctors are dumb and give bad advice, it's a thing, but harping on about not listening to medical professionals is a dodgy route to go down, instead, try suggesting getting a second opinion, talking to a different type of doctor, making sure there isn't a misunderstanding etc
  • shaming, bullying, pressuring, or being mean. Just don't do it.

If you see anyone giving bad advice, a teen with ED behaviour, even if you're unsure, report the comments or post to us, even if you do that and feel we ignored it, we did not, we never do, any rule or guideline breaking comments are removed and met with bans when appropriate, posts are removed if they break rules, are concerning, or if we believe it's in the teens best interest, posts are often locked to avoid bad advice coming through once all the good advice has been given and the post has run its course (though not always), if there are no rule breaking comments on a post by a teen, but you'd still like to be sure we're aware of the post, report it! It's never an inconvenience or problem.

DO NOT ACCEPT DM REQUESTS FROM USERS. We want to keep this community as safe as possible, please remember to refuse to accept dm requests from other users, report comments offering to send you a dm to us. Users trying to DM people in this subreddit (whether teens or not) are usually either scam artists or perverts. if you want more info on how to turn off your DMs, report users to us or to reddit, etc, click this link Progress pics, teen safety on reddit

Feel free to add more helpful resources in the comments here, ask questions to clarify terms, etc,

PSA: no we will not be age restricting the sub, yes teens are welcome and allowed to post, no we will not consider age restricting the sub.

The last point is just some links I like:

Weightloss YouTuber tricked me. ☠️

I’ve been watching this YouTuber who lost 140 lbs videos on tips and how she lost weight. The other day in the middle of her longest video she said I couldn’t ever lose weight so I started glp-1s which I don’t disclose because people say I took the easy way out and I finally lost all the weight and I’m like??? So if you were doing all of this stuff and not losing weight does it even work?? Do I need a glp1 like you? Just to clarify I’m not anti glp1 it just rubs me the wrong way to be misleading.

Edit: I didn’t expect this to blow up so I won’t be responding to y’all but thanks for the comments for me to read later 😳

I actually like it when people comment on my weight loss

First, I want to acknowledge everyone is different. But me personally, in 7 months i lost 55 pounds, from 230 to 175 pounds at 5 feet 8 and actually appreciate it when people make comments about my weight loss.

I've read other people on here take it as insult cause it insinuated that they weren't attractive before, but i dont take it that way. I take it as acknowledgement of the hard work I put in to lose the weight, cause it was ALOT of work.

Also, I know i didnt look good before. I dont have any delusion that at 230 pounds, I was fat and not considered conventionally attractive. Even at 175 pound, I think i look ok but wouldn't say ive hit attractive level yet.

Not Recognized at My PCP’s Office

Hello Everyone! I haven’t been into my primary care physician‘s (Dr C) office for a few months and the few last times his assistant Rachel was off or helping other patients, and hadn’t seen me for 6 months. This morning I’m at the office and Rachel is calling me and looking past me and then she realizes the skinny guy with the black pork pie hat smiling back at her is lighter version she hadn’t seen for awhile. She remarked how great I look and I confirmed I had lab results that confirmed it. This morning’s weigh in has me at 204.6 lbs. Dr C agreed that I’m doing good. The validation is nice but at a point where I am getting used to the lighter version of me. My loose skin has become a badge of honor. I‘m going to try to focus on building muscle and strength. So, I’ll be ignoring the scales for a bit.

I just realized that my entire body (hips included) used to be smaller than my current waistline.

Upvotes

So I'm fat. I'll admit it. My BMI is currently 39.5. I've just really started my weight loss journey in June (down 15 lbs!). Two years ago I was a healthy weight. But medical weight gain from medication made me gain 100 lbs. At my smallest, my BMI was 19. And at that weight my hip and shoulder measurements were smaller than my current waistline is. My old self could literally stand inside my current waist with room to spare.

Today I finally convinced myself to take body measurements because I couldn't bring myself to do it before. I'm sure they're smaller than they were 15 lbs ago, but I have nothing to compare them to. What I can compare them to are my lowest weight measurements, which killed me. My thighs used to be smaller than my biceps currently are. Every body part used to be like half the size they are now.

I'm not sure what the point of this post is. I guess I'm just mourning my former body and feeling bad about myself. I can't imagine myself losing 115 pounds to get back to my smallest weight. It's unfathomable. I'm not giving up though. I plan to drop some weight. I'm just unhappy that it's gotten this bad. I feel like a stranger in my own body.

Has anyone else become MORE insecure after losing weight?

I’ve lost a lot of weight recently, and weirdly, it’s made me much more insecure about my appearance. When I was bigger, I actually had this “idgaf what people think” attitude. I was more sociable, less anxious, and more comfortable talking to people.

I think being fat gave me a weird kind of protective barrier. I could tell myself, “it’s because I’m fat” or “when I lose weight I’ll be hot.” I convinced myself that most of what I disliked about my face was down to fat distribution (my hooded eyes, bigger-looking nose, double chin, etc.)

Now that I’ve lost the weight, I don’t have that explanation anymore. I obviously look different and probably better in some ways, but I haven’t had the transformation I imagined. I thought losing weight would make me feel like a completely different person. Instead, I look like… me, just thinner. I haven’t suddenly become Kendall Jenner. Now I’m stuck with the thought that I’m still ugly, just skinnier.

What worries me is that I’ve realised I’m just moving the goalposts. I missed out on so many experiences because I told myself I’d do them when I was thinner. Now I’m telling myself I’ll do them when I’m prettier, get my teeth done, fix my nose, etc. It feels like there will always be something else I need to change before I can actually live my life.

I also genuinely can’t tell how I look anymore. My perception of myself feels completely unreliable. I look different in every picture, the good ones im convinced are catfish & the bad ones must be the true depiction of me. I’ll occasionally get attention from men now, but instead of enjoying it, I question whether they’re actually interested or whether they’re making fun of me. If I start to like someone, I can feel genuinely panicked and think, “they must think I’m a weird monster?”

I know losing weight was never going to magically fix my self-esteem, but I didn’t expect to feel more insecure afterwards.

Has anyone else experienced this? How did you learn to stop making your weight/appearance the prerequisite for actually living your life?

I want to lose 45 pounds before my birthday safely

My birthday is in the first week of february, so really, this goal is aimed towards february 1st, but I really want to lose about 45 lbs. (eventually, i want to lose more, this isn’t my final goal by any means)

So far, i’ve managed to lose 30 lbs since april, but my autoimmune disease flared really bad, i’ve been swapped around on a lot of medications which helped me gain most of that back. I also started a job at a chick fil a, and where i’m getting about 10k+ steps a day just from work alone, I found myself ordering quick and easy things such as mac and fried chicken sandwiches. So I know I have let go a bit in that department too!!

Currently standing in at 245lbs as a 5’8, 24yo f.

Do we think it’s possible to lose 45 lbs by February safely? And how does everyone keep strong during the holidays? I am nervous about that!

We don’t have a fridge or microwave to bring our own food to work, but I did get some thermos containers so I can maybe bring some fruits or cottage cheese or something. Tempted to get a few more and maybe a small lunch box??

Any tips or advice or encouragement would be amazing! I can lose the weight at first but it ALWAYS comes back. I don’t want to go into 25 this overweight and sick all the time!

Edit: forgot to mention that last feb I started in at 267lbs!

I finally broke the cycle

About a year and a half ago, I was 90kg at 5'10" and stuck in a really bad cycle. I was ordering pizza and junk food 3–4 times a day and, honestly, I didn't know how to stop.

One of the moments that really broke me was walking to work after a Coke bender. The button on my trousers popped, and I started crying. I remember thinking, how the fuck did I let myself get to this point?

Not long after, my mate was chasing me as a joke and I got completely winded. I looked in the mirror and saw my stomach and love handles moving around, and I knew I couldn't keep living like that.

So I finally decided to change.

A year and a half later, I'm 75kg and recently turned 20. I feel better than I ever have. Sometimes strangers even honk their horns or wave at me from across the street, which still feels surreal.

These days I don't do anything extreme. I follow the 80/20 rule and walk pretty much everywhere with my headphones on. It's honestly become something I really enjoy.

It's crazy looking back at where I was. If you're stuck in that cycle right now, I promise you can break it too. I never thought I could.

Ideal weight seems impossible

So I'm currently on a weight loss quest after gaining a lot of weight over the last couple of years. I have already lost about 20 pounds and I still have a long way to go. So I checked out the ideal weight for somebody my height and it just seems like I will never be able to maintain that weight. It just seems like way too low. For context I am female, 172cm (5'7) tall and weigh 107kg (235pounds). The Ideal weight for me according to the Internet is between 54-74kg (119-163pounds). The lowest weight I have ever been was about 163 pounds but at that time I was working out 5 times a week and ate way too little. I was only able to maintain that weight for a while because I was restricting my food intake a lot. I don't want to do that, I want to repair my relationship to food and prioritize my health. I don't see myself ever reaching my ideal weight while also eating enough. It's really discouraging.

Is it worth going to gym while being in calorie deficit

I am a 20-year-old woman living in a hostel in India. I want to lose a significant amount of weight, and my BMI is 32. I am currently planning to eat around 30–35 g of protein daily. I know this isn’t a lot, but as an Indian college student living as a bachelor, it’s difficult for me to find affordable, convenient, and sufficiently high-protein foods every day.
I don’t want to lose muscle while losing weight, but I’m worried that being in a calorie deficit will affect my muscle recovery. Would going to the gym and doing resistance training still be beneficial, or would it be better to stick to brisk walking?
Please don't tell me to add protein

One month in!

I’ve lost 10 whole pounds!!! Honestly the weight loss was unbelievable! I legit had to reweigh myself just to be sure it was real lol. Tbh it is exhilarating. I thought I would never do after failing the first time. But after a breakup I think it was time, and man I feel better, like I I’m stepping into undiscovered territory!

Sorry about the yap 😅 I’m just happy! Well to explain, my goal is to lose around 60 to 80 pounds. Something like setting up goals to reach bigger one kind of thing I’m doing. And I just can’t fathom the love I have for myself now that I know I can push through this turbulent time.

I am probably gonna do monthly post if that’s ok with the mods?

But thanks everyone, for sharing your stories through your tough journeys. It really helps.

Has anyone kept weight off for 5+ years?

What the title says. I read that statistically regain happens within 5 years, and that most people who lose weight will regain.

If this happened to you, how much did you regain and why do you think that was? Are you happy with where you are now?

If you've successfully kept weight off.....how did you do it? Is regaining still a fear, or when did you start trusting yourself?

I lost 50lbs once before and slowly gained 70. Now I'm losing weight again, determined for this time to be different. There are things I need to do in my life that I can't do if I regain the weight (surgery results, certain outdoor activities, etc.)

Self perception 20kgs down after a break

I’ve lost 20kgs in the last year, I’ve got another 10kgs or so to go but due to travel and other commitments I’ve been on a bit of a break for around five weeks.

I’ve been maintaining - but what’s interesting is how my own self image has changed. When I got to 20kgs down I was really impressed with my achievement - I’d never lost this much before! I loved how much smaller I looked etc.

But a few weeks of maintaining and it’s like my brain has made this my new normal. I’m not particularly excited by how I look, and now all I can see is that I still have a fair bit to lose. I don’t hate how I look, but I’m not like ‘wow I don’t recognise myself’.

Also I was checking out some old photos of me over a year ago and something else shifted - I can’t believe how big I looked! That was just me for most of my life so up until recently, in my head, that was just me.

It’s so interesting what weight loss does to the brain!

How do I let my grandparents know I'm eating healthy/dieting without them worrying?

Hi everyone! So I 19F have finally started taking care of my health. Im only 5 feet tall which is really quite short and it makes my calorie intake a little lower than someone "average height". I started tracking my calories and I've absolutely fallen in love with it. It helps me stay on track, see my macros, etc. I've actually started enjoying eating again when I know how much I've eaten

Now to the issue: my grandmother fusses over my eating. Her diet consists of foods I try and avoid on the regular that I do eat but in moderation. Such as having coffee in the afternoon and offering cake, cookies, stuff like that everytime. Eating really high-calorie foods for every meal. If I try and say I'm watching what I eat she'll get overly worried and just guilt me into eating more than what I need/want.

Now, my mother (who knows about my diet and approves knowing I do eat enough and am doing well physically) and my grandmother are going on a 2-week road trip and asked me to come with them. I know it is childish, but I dont know whether or not I want to go, because it means I have to eat without counting my calories for 2 weeks. Is there a way i could tell my grandmother I'll go with them if I can buy my own foods, instead of what she's planned? I know I do want to go, but I also know I dont want to spend 2 weeks being "off-track".

body dysmorphia + muscle and weight

does anyone else have body dysmorphia like i do? I am 26f, very athletic and a runner (albeit being injured rn) and as a result have quite a bit of muscle. i feel like my weight doesn’t “make sense” with how i look. i’m 5’5 and probably around 135, so my bmi is around 22.5 and closer to being overweight than underweight. at this weight i have visible abs, collarbones, sternum sticking out (although to be fair i don’t have much going on in the boob department anyway). i feel like i’ve never seen anyone my height and weight who actually looks like me, and it makes me question if i am actually way bigger than i think. i know everyone’s body composition is different but i can’t help but want to lose 10-15 pounds just for the sake of the number (which is stupid, i know).

48 and ready to change

Really looking for some advice, encouragement, anything at this point. Im 48 and for the past 8 years my weight has slowly taken over. Im 5'9 went from 190, then 200, and now im at my heaviest at 236 and I cant even look at myself anymore. I saw a picture my daughter took of me yesterday and cries, I dont even look like the person I use to be. I dont eat alot, I drink my calories, 2 to 3 Starbucks ice coffees a day sometimes. When I do eat its always at night when I cant shut my mind off then its a fruit snack here, ice cream sandwhich there, a banana, then 4 cookies, etc.

I know my husband doesnt find me attractive anymore, its been years since we've well you know. Ive tried to lose weight in the past, tracking apps, fitness watches, even gone to the gym but I only feel comfortable on the treadmill, weights scare me as I have no idea what to do. Ill lose 15lb start feeling alittle confident then something will hit me, someone making a comment on my weight, being rejected again by my husband and I say whats the point.

This time im done! Im doing this for myself because I want to feel good, I want to feel desirable, for once im my life id like to turn some heads. I redownloaded the app, no drive thru coffee today, and I guess I just have to take it day by day. But ill be damned if im going to allow my weight to keep this chock hold on me!

Life happens, so does regaining.

F24 CW160 GW140. My starting weight in 2023 was 258 pounds. In febuary of this year I hit 143. It has been an absolute shit show of a 12 months, and in the midst of it 3 pounds from my goal, I totally starting getting loose at the seams after months of upheaval after upheaval after upheaval.

This time last year I was engaged, frankly, ripped as fuck, and was joining the marines. I ran a few 5ks. Felt amazing.

My ex fiance cheated on me (had been the whole time) my waivers were not approved for the marines, my car broke down twice, I left a good job to work for a friend (we are not on speaking terms, I no longer work there, and 3 of the employees from that company are planning to sue that ex friend,) got into an emotionallt abusive rebound relationship, and got kicked out 40 days before moving into my apartment and have been staying with my grandmother. I then had to deal with domestic violence from my aunt I have an OP against.

:D

So yeah, I gained 20 pounds.

I was barely holding it together in the 150 range up until August. I ate 4 Nutella sandwhiches back to back and had to catch my breath a second ago and a grip (and probably new jeans).

This Sunday I officially have lost only 99 pounds.

All this to say ? Life happens. Especially when you lose weight young. Regain is not inevitable, but it shouldnt come as a source of shame if it does happen under very unfortunate circumstances. It often doesnt come as a single fuck it moment, but a slow build up of old habits under stress. Shitting on yourself wont change yesterday and wont make getting back on track easier.

I could sit here and look in the mirror and be ashamed at all the times I have dropped the ball the last year, but especially this last month. Or I could sit back and appreciate the sheer force of will it took to only gain the bulk of that this last month and a half after fighting off 10 pounds back and forth for months.

Ive gained 20, but in this year, looking at my tracking apps, I lost 30. I lost the same 10 pounds 3 seperate times despite the absolute shit show going on. Im sure a lot of you facing regain are in the same boat.

I move into my apartment next week, I figure I will probably overeat in the insane quantities of sweets my grandmother has in her house again, and will not find it in myself to not join her for lunch again. I will probably have taco bell and a beer when I sit on the unfurnished apartment carpet that first night, and I wont workout until the week after once Im done unpacking and certainly wont hit the apartment gym until I feel a bit more strong.

And I imagine, come next febuary, once Im settled, back into my routine, and knowingly too frugal to buy junk or my binge foods into any of the places ive lived, I'll be at my goal weight, probably less ripped, but much calmer and happier and capable of maintaining what I had previously lost for a year again with far more ease.

Be easy on yourself. Dont use life as an excuse to overeat, but dont see circumstantial relapses as an excuse to hate your progress, even if it seems like its going backwards. I learned I can handle 6 major life upheavals in a year without eating to cope, and I dont look as unsightly as I thought I did the last time I weighed this.

And I know that one thing I can always do, no matter the regain, no matter how long it takes to get back on that wagon, is lose it again.

Advice needed

Upvotes

Hi all. Bit of background, I’m 6’1 and roughly 225 lbs. I’ve hated my body for a while and I’m finals biting the bullet and making some massive lifestyle changes. I’m moving to a new city soon and using that as my kick in the ass. Ive always been somewhat athletic and playing sports so I never had to worry about my weight and calorie intake and diet and all that but now that I’m no longer actively
Playing a sport, I’ve gained a lot of weight.

Here’s my plan : calorie deficit of about 1,800 calories in a day. Trying to get as much protein as possible and burn as many calories as possible. I don’t hate cardio (treadmill walking on incline , bike, etc). I do want to gain muscle and re shape my body to be more toned but I am not focused on being ripped. I want to loose the weight and then worry about that after.

Do you have any advice? Is there anything specific I should focus on workout wise? What should my weekly split be? 2 days cardio 2 days weights? Only cardio?

I am aiming at 2 lbs a week. And I want to get down to 170-180lbs. Is this too ambitious? What would a realistic timeframe look like here?

Also, I don’t eat eggs or seafood but any recommendations on filling meals and low calorie hacks would be greatly appreciated. I plan on tracking my calories using one of the apps available.

I’ve been thinking about this for way too long, too depressed, lack of motivation, hating my body and just overall body imagine and mental wellbeing have not been good. I’m making the decision now to change and any input or advice on ways to stay on routine, calorie hacks, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all.

losing weight in college?

5’6 21F here. Used to weigh 200lbs. Lost a bunch in high school and got down to 120, then maintained around 140 for a while. Well, I’m in my junior year of college now and I’m at 170. Whoops. No one has said anything to me, but I’m sure they’ve noticed. Hoping to get back down to the 130-140 range again because I think that’s where I looked best.

I wish I could keep it off but ugh I just love food. My summer job was at a dessert place and that probably didn’t help, I think I gained like 15lbs this summer alone lol. I’m done working there now though since summer is over.

When I lost weight originally, I used a food scale and counted calories. But in college, I don’t have a kitchen. I eat from the buffet in the dining hall. So I can’t weigh the food or ingredients.

My college doesn’t have a traditional campus and unfortunately the gym is nowhere near my dorm, but I’m going to try and go on more walks. Otherwise, not really sure what to do.

Weird thing happening today

First of all, I have not lost a significant amount, just around 7 kg, I want to lose another 15 at least. I started with home workouts and I eat around 1900 calories a day. I am a 24 years old guy, 6'2 tall, low muscle mass so belly fat is very noticeable.

It's been like 2 months since I started and today I had the first instance of me undereating and not feeling hunger, like I ate 1200 calories and almost forgot I should have eaten something else as well. Do you have an idea about what it could be?

I also wanted to lose weight for a special occasion in 2 months and half, do you think it would be doable to lose 10 kg while building muscles? I picked a 3 days a week full body routine and I will try to keep following it as long as possible, it is from bodyweightfitness and has progressive training, probably goes all the way into intermediate/advanced, even if I am pretty sure that for a while I will struggle a lot with it.

Another question about protein, if I wanted my weight target to be 75kg (165 LBS) should I eat protein based on that weight or my current weight? I am struggling a bit with intake and I am considering to start taking powder protein because it's being a real struggle to reach it.

Diet and Exercise everything is good but still not losing weight

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some honest feedback because I'm getting pretty frustrated with my progress.

I've been training for around 5 months, starting around May 2026. My main goal isn't to become huge . I want a lean, muscular, aesthetic physique with visible abs, defined arms/shoulders and a good V-taper, while maintaining as much muscle as possible.

The problem is that my body weight has barely changed.

My weight

I've been around:

May: ~92–93 kg

June: ~93 kg

July: ~93–94 kg at times

August: mostly ~92–93 kg

September: ~92 kg

What confuses me

If I'm genuinely eating below maintenance and training consistently, shouldn't my weight have dropped significantly after 5 months?

At the same time, my strength has increased, so I'm wondering if I've been recomping — gaining some muscle while losing fat.

But if that's happening, I expected my waist/love handles to have changed more.

My biggest frustration is that my love handles are still very noticeable, and I don't feel like I've become significantly leaner despite training.

Diet

My original target was around 2,000–2,200 kcal/day, with roughly 120–150 g protein. I have been trying to maintain myself around these calories and protein intake has been 100-120gm.

I'd genuinely like people to look at this objectively and tell me:

  1. Does this look like a recomp?

  2. Is 92–93 kg after 5 months a sign that my calorie deficit isn't actually consistent?

  3. How much fat loss/muscle gain would be realistic after 5 months naturally?

  4. Should I continue around 2,000 kcal or change it?

  5. What measurements should I track besides weight and waist?

  6. How much should my physique realistically have changed by now?

Any honest criticism is appreciated. I would rather find out that I'm doing something wrong and fix it than continue doing the same thing for another 5 months.

Weight loss and scarcity mindset

One of the patterns I’m trying to change is eating too much because I’m worried the food will disappear. Growing up, all the good stuff (treats, soda, even leftovers) got eaten right away as soon as we had done the shopping — and I didn’t get much, if any.

I had access to food but it was very basic, like peanut butter sandwiches. My family was pretty lower middle class.

So now, I fixate on the treats in the house and whether I’ll get “enough.” Thing is, my spouse is not an over eater and won’t steal all the treats. We can afford whatever food we want and if I ask my spouse not to eat something, he won’t.

Anyone else dealing with the same trigger? What’s your advice for growing out of a sense of scarcity?

Healthy Carb Alternatives/ Meal Ideas

Hi all!

I started really getting serious about finally losing this weight on 7/17. I’ve been pretty consistent (we did have a 5 day vacation and that set me back a little, but I’ve rebounded and continued to lose). As of this morning, I’m down 20 full pounds since 7/17. I’m very proud of this. (Of course, I’ve got another 80 pounds to go, but that first 20 feels great and I am starting to increase in energy and stamina all around.

That said, I am officially sick of brown rice. I could only eat half of my dinner last night because I just couldn’t stomach another bite of the rice and, unfortunately, everything was mixed together.

I’m using MFP to track calories and macros, and my goal is to have 50% carbs according to the app. I am consistently under on that number as it is, and I know that I need carbs to support all the working out I am doing.

So hit me - when you’re sick to death of rice, what else do you use to balance out your meals in a healthy way?

Any go-to meals you have to hit your macros?
