Hi everyone, my partner and I recently (a week ago) got a lurcher. She is 50% greyhound, 25% Saluki, 12.5% bull, and 12.5% Collie. She is 11 weeks old, and has had her first vaccine. She is a mostly normal puppy, with normal training, normal puppy issues. However, three times with my partner (who is in training to be a dog trainer) she has pressed her nose into his jaw repeatedly with as much force as she can muster, to get at his neck, then repeatedly lunged and bit hard on the side of his neck, then every time he pulls her off she goes back to bite him again, with an alarming speed and force, to the point my partner has described her as a torpedo. This is not normal puppy biting/mouthing, my partner has raised many dogs of various different breeds before. She is fed, toileted, played with, exercised, and sleeps on a complete schedule. The moment she gets mouthy she is put down for a nap. This happens out of nowhere, like a light switch, with no warning, and in various different situations.

My partner was outside with her on her last toilet break of the night, sat down so she could climb on him for warmth need be, and she started rapidly booping her nose on his upper arm, then started growling and launched at it repeatedly, biting and holding on as tight as she could. He managed to gently pry her off, pick her up with hands supporting her shoulders and hips, and within 20 seconds she tried to wiggle closer, for cuddles, and didn't resume the biting, or act like it happened.

This happens in various different scenarios without any clear denominator, my partner is well versed in dog training and has worked to eliminate any known causes of aggression. It's happened in the garden, in the pen, in the living room, and in her own crate. She will suddenly stop and get very still, then launch at either him, or her crate walls. Always within minutes she will return to being a normal happy puppy, responding to petting and training the way she is supposed to.

During one of the incidents when she went for his neck, they were playing in the living room with her favourite toy dragging it along the carpet for her to chase, and she picked it up in her mouth, stared off into the distance, dropped it, and doubled back on the long line lead, and leapt all feet off of the floor, and gripped his neck with her teeth.

My partner has said that this isn't normal for a puppy this age, but this is above his pay grade. He didn't want to ask, so I did. 98% of the time she is the sweetest thing ever. Also, puppy pics attached.

Rodney is a big boy for a 12 week pup. His father was a "lurcher" and his mother was a "Norfolk tumbler". We're thinking he must have some staffy or bull of some sort in him. He's just so much bigger than our other lurcher at this age. He does look a bit like a malinois I think sometimes. He's got a lovely temperament ❤️! Any guesses as to his heritage and potential adult size. For size reference in the first photo, I am a man of 6ft4

Introducing Rodney! He'll be 12 weeks old on Tuesday. We're thinking Rodney is going to be a big boy judging by his size already and the size of his feet and ankles. Trigger is a 14 month old lurcher and about 21 1/2 inch tts and Rodney isn't too far behind already. Trigger is over the moon with him bless him

Hi r/Lurchers! I am looking for any signs of hope for my one year old lurcher pup Korra. We got her from a local rescue center at 8 weeks old and I should preface this by saying that I absolutely love her so much but… she has completely ruined mine and my partners lives and as we near our first gotcha day we are both feeling really sad and desperate. I’ve never cried so much or been so consistently bruised up.

Despite our best efforts at early socialisation she’s a nervous little thing and gets a easily overstimulated outside which results in her attacking our arms and ankles with bites that are bad enough that we now use a muzzle any time she leaves the house, even just to go in our garden, but this isn’t a perfect solution as she still goes absolutely ballistic jumping, barking and nipping between the tiny gaps in the muzzle. We’ve worked with multiple trainers at this point (all positive reinforcement) and spent countless hours trying to find something that helps. Possibly important to note: she is not yet neutered and we believe she probably has some bully in her although we aren’t sure what mix she is. I guess I am mainly looking to see if anyone has ever made it and ended up with a nice dog after months and months of pure hell? I am willing to put all the time and energy she needs but I just want to know that it’s possible :(

i have had my rescue for 7 weeks (as of tomorrow) and, in the uk, it has been a very hot start to our relationship.
he has settled in amazingly, i have had other posts on this sub with my struggles and things are still tough at times but we are doing a lot better!
the rain has hit, he hates it. do people have advice on how to encourage going out for the toilet? thankfully all walks have been dry but this downpour has started and he is very offended by it (unlike my lab, he is a water dog for sure)

a few questions-
should i buy him a coat?
if yes, what brands are good for saluki- lurcher types?
is there anything i can do to get him out there?
any other similar advice is welcome, i have grown up with dogs who dont care about rain so this is a first for me :)

A couple of weeks ago I posted my lurcher Margo. I am so thankful for such a kind and supportive community this is! She has really started to get better on our walks. Crate training has improved she does however love to jump in the air when we first get home so working on that still lol.

Hi guys! I’m rescuing a sweet little girl next weekend and since I’ve older dogs I want to plan some activities I can do with her when they need a break. The centre reckons mom is a retriever x greyhound and dad was a collie. She’s going to have quite the play drive so I already have a flirt pole in the Amazon cart! I also want to try one of those puzzle feeders, it should work well considering she’s got a long nose. Also the good ol knotted towel and kong.

Meet Milo, not sure on the exacts about his cross but we're thinking he's bull lurcher like our Meg. Crazy to think he's only 13 weeks old, he will definitely be a big boy.

My 1,5 year old lurcher suddenly stopped listening while in the dog park. This is common behaviour for an adolescent dog, but it’s gotten to the point where it’s problematic.

We live in the middle of Amsterdam and the park is surrounded by busy streets with cars. One time she escaped from the park and I had to scream at 3 cars to prevent an accident.

When I so much as look at her, she runs away from me. She won’t come when I call out to her.

I tried:
- bringing her favourite treats
- brining her favourite toy (she comes close, but not close enough for me to grab her or play with the toy)
- walking away from her (she comes toward me but stays 3 meters away)
- sitting on the ground with treat/toy
- backing away while excitedly calling for her of clapping

The only thing that works now is letting a stranger grab her.

I’m not going to let her off leash for a while because it’s just too dangerous, but she has a lot of energy and wants to play with other dogs so I feel bad about this.

Does anyone have any tips?

their long limbs allow them to get into such funny positions - i would love to see them!

This is my lovely 5 month old female Bedlington whippet. I feel so lucky to have her and just love her more everyday.

I am trying to find as much information about adolescence as possible. I keep seeing/ hearing horror stories about how awful it is for everyone. We do basic training throughout the day, lots of recall work, loose leash walking, dog training classes etc. I just want to make sure I’m doing right by her. I can’t find much existing lurcher-specific information online.

What age did your lurcher or Bedlington whippet specifically reach adolescence? What changes did you notice first? Was there anything that helped you get through it? My main question: is there anything you wished you worked on in puppyhood before they reached adolescence?

I work at a lovely big place looking after the garden. New owners aren't into gardening so it gets lonely. Luckily Jack stepped up! He gets his steps in and spurs me on!

UK based! Rescued as a puppy 5 months ago, was told she was 5-6 months old but no way to confirm. She is a lazy little lady who loves lying like a bearskin rug, perhaps the shiniest dog I have ever seen, pretty bony and buff at the same time. I have always said she looks like a dog from ancient Egypt/anubis. Obsessed with food and can be a bit of a menace. Sunglasses for scale!

Bless my little girl, we recently lost both our greyhound and lurcher within 6 months of each other, so we have a grieving 1 year old baby, who hasn’t been eating properly since we lost our 15 year old lurcher 2 weeks ago, However I’m so happy to announce, she flippin ate tonight 🙌🙌 anyone have any other suggestions on how to help her through? We agree that she needs a friend and soon, but we have to wait 2 weeks because stuff is planned and the time needs to be right, it’s horrible to see her this way because she is such a bonkers kid!

I'm aware his nails need a little trim, but I thought I'd share how good Ollie's paws look now compared to when we brought him home 2 months ago! We think he was licking them raw through anxiety in the kennels so it's lovely to see them all clean, white, and healthy.

What's your guys' favourite signs of success that tell you that your dog is finally living the happy safe life they deserve?

Hey guys, not to get too depressing but my sweet boy passed away two nights ago and our whole family is heartbroken. We drove past a rescue centre today, popped in and we fell in love with Lurcher mix pups.

Dad is in the rescue centre as well and he seems to be a full collie, Mom hasn’t been caught yet but we were told she seems to have retriever and greyhound. I absolutely fell in love with the shy runt of the little, they’re only three months and they’re all sweethearts but I knew the two more friendly girls would be snapped up straight away. She was so timid and I feel like she’ll flourish beautifully with our older dogs, they are seniors technically but they’re mad for play and they don’t know their age. Having a pup will be a breath of fresh air but we’ve never had anything other than terriers.

These pups have zero training and I’ve full intentions on putting her into a training programme with other dogs to socialise her more but what would you guys recommend for at home? I know lurchers can be lazy but since she’s a collie mix and possibly retriever I think she will need a lot of enrichment activities. Anything to keep her little brain busy goes!

I think I will purchase a play pen for her just for overnight so she doesn’t get herself in any trouble while we’re sleeping. My parents haven’t had a pup in 20 years, and I wasn’t born. I think everything happens for a reason and my poor Tommy made room for another soul who needs a new start in life.
