My theory on Space Oddity: It’s not about space, it’s about depression.

Hey everyone,

I’m not gonna lie, I started listening to Space Oddity today and reading the lyrics, and this theory just hit me. If you strip away the whole astronaut theme, it feels like a deeply sad metaphor for depression, suicide, and institutional control.

To me, Ground Control represents the psychiatrists or family members. When they say "Take your protein pills and put your helmet on," it sounds exactly like society telling someone: "Take your antidepressants, put your armor on, and get on with life." They just want him to function.

Major Tom is a guy that people love and admire, he has a family, but he is completely lost. Even the line "the papers want to know whose shirts you wear" shows how everyone cares about his image and success, while completely ignoring that he is drowning on the inside.

The most heartbreaking part to me is when they celebrate that he "made the grade." It reminds me so much of how someone with depression can seem like they are finally doing better, and everyone celebrates it, but it’s a false recovery. In reality, they are just giving up.

When the circuit goes dead and he stops replying, it’s a quiet relapse. Ground Control panics, but Major Tom just willingly cuts ties and lets himself drift away because "Planet Earth is blue and there's nothing I can do."

It made me feel so sad to realize that while everyone was cheering for him, he was actually losing his battle.

Has anyone else seen the song this way?

The Beatles song says “Can’t Buy Me Love.” Sounds like a negotiating tactic. What is the price point of love?

Wake The Shore - Sail to You lyrics

I’m
I’m holding onto the wind,
call me like I’m just on a whim
never to be seen again

But I know I’m just a sailor on a sailboat
Just like my father, but I’m still broke
But that won’t stop me now

So cast your sail
I’m ready for the Gail
I can’t worry about the things I can’t swim back to
So here I go, I’m off to the sea
Here I go I’m off to the see

Will, will I ever know
Something like some piece of note
Hidden underneath the boats

But I’m tied, just like an anchor, my thoughts died
I saw them sink into a new life
But I’m just a Phoenix and I’m going into the New

And my mind has gotten in the way of some things
And my time has slowly drifted away
But I know I’m on my way to you.
I’m sailing soon. I’ll sail to you.

And my mind has gotten in the way of some things
And my time has slowly drifted away
But I know I’m on my way to you.
I’m sailing soon. I’ll sail to you.

she knew how to drive since a few months ago
tonight she took the bus for old times sake
the man swung his bags around the seats
and fough with the driver for selling on the go

the stop was hidden beneath the long grass
got mosquito bites walking to my house
a lazy hello and a quick hugs
the town was hell but we managed around

with a glimpse of a night out
at our favorite place
you carry me back
while I fake to have slept

can’t blame the swing set
for staying the same
for showing new kids
what i once felt first

the sidewalks that sculped us
into this
cause I could’ve been anyone
but i’m whats here

so let’s run it back,
run it back
run it back
one last time

the swings in your backyards
the flowers in your hands
and what we made of it

walking fast,
rolling down the avenue now
a shop that closed
a night that died young
flashbacks of us

when we were younger
three plates and a promise
to buy a house off the coast
to spend the summer

a lazy hello and a quick hug
the time to laugh under a europe sun
call whichever plane i regret to take
we were taugh big dreams and messy phonecalls

can’t blame the swing set
for staying the same
for showing new kids
what i once felt first

the sidewalks that sculped us
into this
cause I could’ve been anyone
but i’m whats here

so let’s run it back,
run it back
run it back
one last time

the swings in your backyards
the flowers in your hands
and what we made of it

Levon Meaning

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

So do I have this right? A guy named Alvin Tostig has a son that he names Levon and his Christmas Day birth is announced in the NY Times along pronouncements of of all hope being gone and the end of the world imminent. Levon is a proud veteran who is a successful business man. He has a son that he names Jesus. Jesus is a bit of a layabout and ungrateful punk. Jesus wants to leave the world to get away from Levon and hopes Levon dies a slow death.

I went to an appearance where Bernie was asked what the meaning of the song was and he said it is about a guy who sell balloons.

Sun is the same, in a relative way, but you're older Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Can anyone help me with the lyrics to “Catalyst” by The Venus Fly Trap?

I’ve been a fan of The Venus Fly Trap since the mid-1990s. They’re a British band from Northampton, and I’ve always loved their music. One of my favorite songs is “Catalyst.”
I actually discovered them as a teenager in Mexico, when I found one of their compilations in a little shop that specialized in rare music. I’ve kept listening to them ever since.
The funny thing is that I’ve never been able to find the lyrics to “Catalyst” online. I can understand some parts of the song, but there are other lines that I just can’t make out.
Would anyone here happen to know the lyrics, or be able to help me figure out some of the words I’m missing? Even pointing me toward a source where I could find them would be a huge help. Thank you!

Did Jack London’s "The Star Rover" inspire the song "Highwayman" by Jimmy Webb?

Has anyone else noticed how Jimmy Webb's "Highwayman" feels remarkably similar to Jack London's The Star Rover? Both depict a consciousness that survives bodily death and experiences multiple lives across different historical periods. I haven't found any discussion connecting the two, and I'm wondering whether this is just a shared archetype or whether others have noticed the same parallel.

Do you think this is just a coincidence, or are there earlier literary traditions that influenced both works?

What’s the difference between a clever lyric and an emotionally effective lyric?

I’ve been thinking about this lately: sometimes a lyric can be incredibly clever, full of metaphors, wordplay, double meanings, etc., but still not really make you feel anything.

Then there are lyrics that are almost ridiculously simple, but somehow hit harder than a paragraph of elaborate writing.

So where do you draw the line?

Is a clever lyric automatically good songwriting, or does it only really work when the cleverness serves the emotion? And can a lyric be emotionally powerful even if there’s nothing particularly “clever” about the writing?

Curious what everyone thinks. I’m especially interested in examples where you think the lyrics are emotionally effective despite being very simple.

What’s a lyric that made you stop and think, “How did they even come up with that?”

There are some lyrics that are so specific, clever, or emotionally devastating that you genuinely wonder how someone’s brain even got there.

Not necessarily your favorite lyric or the most poetic one, but something that made you pause and think, “How the hell did they come up with this?”

It could be a ridiculously clever metaphor, an unexpected comparison, a tiny detail that says way more than it should, or just a line that captures a feeling you didn’t know how to put into words.

Drop the lyric and the song, and tell me what makes it so good.

[Theory] Mr. Brightside isn't about physical cheating. The "other guy" is just the narrator's darker alter-ego taking over.

[Train to Oz - Harm and Ease] I’m really struggling with a few lines, I can’t make out what is being sung.

This is what I could transcribe so far. There may be multiple errors:

North wind blows
She don’t belong aginst us anymore
She’s found her road
Gone where she never ever been before

You’ve heard the news
You won’t get a glance at her open shoes(?)
She’s clacking heels
Tearing down the walls with a (hottest?) honest stand

[RIT]
Got a ticket on a train to Oz!
All aboard where the souls are lost(?)
(Like a thief who’s ruining art)?
Doesn’t matter who you are!
Like a mother with a heart of gold!
(Now I’m wondering ???)
A place to miss and now she’s the boss(?)
Got a one way ticket on a train to Oz!

She’s gone too far
To go back home, she’s a shooting star
She’ll find her way
Down the (?) shore and the city gates

[RIT]

If you are leaving girl, you better make it soon
Cause if you stay too long, you’ll end up on the moon
I’ve been around it all, this city never rests
Although the worst has come we’ve yet to see the best

[RIT]

Got a one way ticket on a train to Oz!

Roger Alan wade, "her 12th d-y-pick-n-pay stink"

In his song Psycho B***h from hell. What the heck is he talking about? I googled the lyrics and this is what I got. Doesn't seem right.

Could it be "her 12 D (double) - wide chicken feet stink" ? I can't understand him in the song. Any clarifications are appreciated, thank you

Some day, one day

Any Queen fans and Wuthering Heights readers here? So I m one and listening to this song while reading and after reading the book I felt it realy related to the plot of the book. I have no confirmation Brian May(composer) weote this based off the novel, but he is British and an intellectual soooo... maybe? Idk I searched and not even found no information but also found no one discussing the relation of the lyrics to the book, which surprised me given how famous both Queen and Wuthering Heights are. Here are the lyrics, please read and tell me I m not the only one that sees the relation. I interpret it as the speaker being Healthcliff and the listener of the message being Cathy.

"You never heard my song before The music was too loud But now I think you hear me well For now we both know how No star can light our way In this cloud of dark and fear But some day, one day

Funny how the pages turn And hold us in between A misty castle waits for you And you shall be a queen Today the cloud it hangs Over us and all is grey But some day, one day

When I was you and you were me And we were very young Together took us nearly there The rest may not be sung So still the cloud it hangs Over us and we're alone But some day, one day

We'll come home"
