Photo of the Week No wonder it was so hard to get one. Initial thoughts after first two days…

WTF! this thing is insane. When I first held it in my hands and started setting things up, I was like ‘no way this is going to be that much better than my beloved 8AI+ (which I’ve had for over a year and consider it one of my best gadget purchases of all time). I also have a 4090 desktop that I built for about 3k way back in the Stone Age for dirt cheap, by today’s standards… that’s my work computer…. After I get my two small children to bed, the last thing I want to do is game at my desk. The 8AI+ has fulfilled one of my greatest desired pastimes for more than a year now.
I was eager to get the next iteration and show my support for the intel handheld movement… however they sold out instantly. I got on the notification list via MSI US online store - saw the email hit my inbox and immediately went and added to cart and hit buy, but they were gone in the 45 seconds it took me to get to the checkout button. However, the next time the availability email came though, I hit all the buttons and got to the checkout in like 15 seconds and finally scored.
I was skeptical about the actual increase in performance and mostly looking forward to less buzzy haptics and maybe a slight bump in quality.

I grossly underestimated what intel and MSI have done. This thing is a monster. The AI+ is still an amazing device. But the EX is just ridiculous. To me, it’s worth every penny in performance gains ($1799 plus tax to be exact). I’m not sure about the math, but it feels like 40% better overall performance at max TDP (I only run max TDP by the way…).

Also, I have medium big hands, not huge, but kinda extra strong from doing mechanical / robotics / cinema camera work everyday. So I was always perfectly happy with the ergonomics of the AI+, whilst totally understanding why a lot of people complained about it. The EX feels like it’s going to float out of my hands up into the air if I don’t hang to it.

I gotta tip my hat to Intel and MSI for this amazing device. If I could tell my 12yo computer nerd self in the mid 90s to travel to 2026 and bring back one thing, it would be my EX.

I have been using this device for almost 2 to 3 months now it’s a beautiful powerful enough for a handheld amazing battery stunning screen, comfortable ergonomics
After three weeks, I have a long trip abroad. I’m really excited to take it with me.

I think I will pair it with AR glasses, something like the upcoming rayneo gt max (but still I don’t know what to expect with this technology I mean the AR glasses)

Share your experience with this monster, let’s share the love 🤓

News Bestbuy restock

As title suggests, does anybody have info on Best Buy restocks for the new EX 8 variant?

As far as I’m aware, the last major restock was at the end of July. (And yes I have HotStock now in case something sporadically pops up)

Also kudos to the guy that told me about Excalibur pc. It was legit but I’m trying to get through best-buy if I can help it.

Thank you all in advance for the help. I’m excited to get one (eventually) when they come back out.

I made a post couple days ago saying should I get the Xbox Ally x20 or the new MSI claw?

And I decided to get the MSI claw as my first handheld to try it out to see if I would like it.I got very lucky getting this, but I had to drive 4 hours to be able to get it.

I will keep you updated and any questions I would have like what should be the first thing I do

Question Could Use Some Advice

I just got my Claw 8 EX, and I swapped the drive for a 4tb, did not clone, and reinstalled windows and the LAN driver. Everything works but my touchscreen. I'm at an impasse as I can't figure out what to do next. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi everyone, here's a video with my impressions of the MSI Claw 8 IA+ after 3 months of use

I'm really surprised by it. When I compare it to the Xbox Rog Ally X and the Legion Go, it's become my favorite handheld PC and honestly, I loved my Legion Go, but this one is way better!

Question Mortall shell 2 runs terribly 8ai

Granted they messed it up with their patch the claw 8 AI went from 60 to 70 FPS

To maybe 40 and stuttering all the time plus whenever I run the game from Steam hard crash if I run it from an exe file it runs but it runs horribly.

I know it's probably the devs who messed it up but I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing and if they have found a way to fix it

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I just picked up the consol for relatively cheap. But the right stick won't show input on gamepad tester, only when moved around. But it registered an output when clicked. Anyone know is it a software/firmware problem or hardware problem?

Gracias.

Photo Claw Desktop Replacement Setup

Thumbnail

I recently found myself needing to condense/simplify my gaming setup. Between changing habits, less free time, significantly less energy, kids, available space, work, etc. etc. etc., I just didn't have the time or inclination to deal with multiple setups. I wanted something multipurpose and modular, and I wanted to do this as simply as I could and with buying as little as I could get away with.

I ended up merging my handheld and desktop situations into a single setup by buying just an eGPU enclosure and using everything else I already had. I ended up doing the following:

  1. Kept my Claw (which I had already upgraded to a 2TB 7.1 gb/s Crucial nvme SSD when I got it) and Jsaux dock

  2. Cannibalized the RTX 4070 Ti GPU from my desktop

  3. Dropped that GPU in a Sonnett Breakaway Box 850 T5, which is the only thing I spent money on

I connected everything else I already had to the Jsaux dock or Sonnett eGPU: 1440p 27" monitor, keyboard, mouse, Xbox controller/charging dock, and sound bar/subwoofer.

I had to take the entire tower apart to get the GPU out, but the rest of the process was easy: open the eGPU, install the card, close it, install the Nvidia drivers on the Claw, hook up thunderbolt and the monitor, plug in the dock and peripherals, and turn it all on. Windows actually did a very good job of managing everything automatically.

There was only one hiccup, and it was with - act surprised - my Bethesda games. They ran perfectly, but didn't recognize my Xbox controller. Fixing it was as simple as opening the M menu, adding a toggle to disable the on-board controller, and turning it off. That was literally the only issue I had.

I realized going into this that I would lose some performance moving to an eGPU. I planned on losing about 20%-30% fps, and that's about what I've seen. For a lot of the games I play, the difference is essentially meaningless.

In addition to the 4070 Ti, my desktop had a i7 12700F, 32 gb DDR 4, and 1TB + 1TB WD Black storage. In Cyberpunk 2077, this translated into 70+ FPS in 1440p with path (not ray) tracing, DLSS quality, no frame generation, and all other settings cranked to the max.

The Claw and eGPU achieved 45 FPS with the same settings. Frame gen brought this up to about 72 FPS with DLSS quality in the benchmark and 82 FPS DLSS auto. Yes, we all know frame gen doesn't "count" as "real" frames. Nonetheless, those frames that don't count come from the GPU, are displayed on my monitor, and are seen by my eyes, so I think real and there's nothing you can do to stop me.

While Cyberpunk had a pretty significant loss, frame generation compensated just fine. I was prepared for this and am perfect happy with using it.

In practical terms, most "normal" games don't have a noticable difference in performance, especially those that were already running at 100+ anyway. Those still hit high 70s to 80s, which I can't tell a difference between. The experience is basically exactly the same as my desktop, I just sometimes have to use frame generation now, which I usually did anyway.

Here's some very quick FPS counts for a few other games I play (highest settings across the board):

Skyrim/FO4/FO76: 60 FPS (a lot of Bethesda games are locked at 60 FPS)

Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth: 110-120 FPS usually, never below 100

Witcher 3: 70-90 FPS with frame gen, with occasional dips down to 62-70 FPS in Novigrad

Doom - The Dark Ages: 60-90 FPS with frame gen

Oblivion Remake: 65-75 FPS with frame gen in the Imperial City

Baldur's Gate 3: 55-65 FPS in the Lower City, 80+ everywhere else

Starfield: 80s FPS in New Atlantis

I don't play any competitive games, so I couldn't tell you how they work. There's other (indie and/or walking simulators) and older (God of War, Horizon, Fallouts, etc.) games I didn't mention here because those were already significantly easier to run than the ones mentioned above, so I didn't bother.

It may not work for you, but I'm very happy with this setup. For my tastes, I don't feel like I've actually sacrificed anything, I have my desktop level performance, can still take my handheld with me if I want to go somewhere, all in a smaller package. Everything else runs smoothly. There's no fan noise whatsoever from the Claw because there's very little CPU load and less coming from the eGPU than I'd gotten from my desktop. I'll give it another week to marinate, but I expect I'll be eBaying my desktop sans GPU. Hell, the RAM and hard drives alone are worth more than what I paid for the Sonnett.

Eventually I'm going to get a non-L desk with vertical storage to save more space, but that's a whole other thing altogether.

Discussion Elden ring underwhelming performance on ex ai+

Getting 30-40 fps and lots of stuttering with native resolution at high settings. Dropping to medium doesn’t seem to change much. Was hoping for atleast a stable 60 fps no stuttering.

I have updated everything that I can think of. Any advice?

Need Technical Assistance 8ai - Removed handheld companion - controller disconnecting

Hi there,

I unfortunately got baited into installing handheld companion which I didn't really like so I removed it. Now it seems that my controller doesn't work except for the 2 msi buttons.

I tried EC reset. I tried reinstalling HC but it only allows me to control HC itself. I tried removing and reinstall gin center M (using removal tool), tried embedded controller on/off.

What I see now under device manager for example is that HID game controller is disappearing every few seconds.. Any tips except for Windows reinstall?

Edit

Solved it by reinstalling windows Updates.

Go to settings, put "reset this pc" in search bar, choose "fix problems using windows update"

Took the device around 4h but whatever, fixed is fixed

Discussion MSI Claw 8 AI+ EX vs OneXPlayer 3: My Early Comparison After Owning Both

Post image
84 Upvotes

I currently have both the MSI Claw 8 AI+ EX and the OneXPlayer 3 sitting here, and after about a day with the OXP3, I’m almost certainly going to sell my EX.

This is obviously an early impression, but here’s what I’ve noticed so far.

The screen difference is glaring
OLED is OLED. The black levels and peak brightness give the OXP3 a huge advantage. This was probably the first thing that made me realize just how different these two devices feel despite having essentially the same Intel chipset.

OneXConsole absolutely smokes MSI Center M
For handheld controls, TDP management and customization, OneXConsole is >>>>> MSI Center M.

You can do much more with the controls, and you can actually tune the gyro to the point where it’s usable. It’s not ROG Xbox level gyro, but it’s worlds better than what the EX has going on.

Ergonomics
This one goes to the EX for me, though not by the large margin you’d expect

The EX feels better in the hands, although its wide body and flared grips make it a little less portable than the OXP3.

The EX is also a smidge heavier once you have the TPU case on it.

VRR
VRR just feels better on the OXP3.

I know there’s an unofficial mod floating around that supposedly addresses some of the VRR issues on the EX, but out of the box, games simply feel smoother on the OXP3 despite both devices using the same Intel chipset.

Cooling
Cooling is another big win for the OXP3.

I find the EX can get uncomfortably hot sometimes, and I think a lot of that comes down to the fan curves not being tuned particularly well for my preferences.

I haven’t had that problem with the OXP3 so far. It stays much more comfortable during gameplay.

Controller haptics and rumble
This is one area where the EX absolutely dogwalks the OXP3.

The OXP3 isn’t MSI A8 level bad with its haptics, but they aren’t good either. The feedback just isn’t particularly precise.

A good example is Madden 27. There are haptics that nicely mimic the sensation of running with the ball carrier. On the EX, you can actually feel that distinction. On the OXP3, it basically turns into one big vibratory mess.
The difference is surprisingly noticeable.

Buttons and D pad
This is going to come down to personal preference.

I actually prefer the micro switch style buttons and D pad on the OXP3 over the stiffer D pad and more traditional Xbox style buttons on the EX.

The OXP3 also absolutely kills the EX when it comes to the placement of the Start and Back buttons. Putting the auxiliary buttons on the bottom of the controllers is also a much better implementation for me.

EX has better feeling triggers, the OXP3 has a trigger throw that’s unnecessarily long, and the switches to mimic hair triggers don’t feel as great as other controllers I like like the Xbox Elite and Gamesir 8K options I have.

Charging
The OXP3 supports 100W charging, so topping off the battery is noticeably faster. The EX is stuck in 65 watt land, it’s a weird miss.

Storage
The EX gets a huge win here for MicroSD Express.

Being able to throw games on a MicroSD Express card and have them run just as smoothly as they do from the SSD is awesome.

The EX also wins when it comes to upgrading the SSD. It’s much easier to get into.

I’m not even going to attempt cracking open the OXP3 because I want to maintain the warranty sticker for potential future resale.

Joysticks
I prefer the OXP3 sticks.

They have more resistance and just feel better to me. I’m also using joystick covers that give my thumbs a little more support, and with those installed, the sticks don’t feel tiny anymore.

The EX sticks feel smaller by comparison, I have large hands so that’s my context here.

Speakers
The EX wins here.

The speakers sound better to me, and there’s actually enough bass that it almost creates a rumble-like sensation that swells and contracts with what’s happening on screen.

It’s a really cool effect that I wasn’t expecting. OXP3 are just okay, way better than the abomination that’s the Legion Go 2.

Xbox Full Screen Experience
One thing I haven’t really seen mentioned is that the OXP3 is incompatible with starting directly into Xbox Full Screen Experience.

Some people won’t care about this at all, but it’s something you notice if you want your handheld to behave more like a console.

If you want that console style startup experience, you’re basically going to be using Steam Big Picture mode.

My assumption is that this is because OneXConsole is so heavily integrated into the system. I suspect launching directly into Xbox Full Screen Experience would interfere with some of that proprietary OneX software.

Build quality
The EX feels like the more solidly built device.

The plastic feels higher quality and doesn’t pick up smudges on the finish as easily.

The OXP3 definitely doesn’t feel cheap, but its overall construction feels a little more fragile compared to the EX.

The EX feels like a tank by comparison.

Value
For me, this isn’t particularly close.

The EX is more expensive and doesn’t come with the same amount of accessories. My OXP3 came with a ton of accessories through the crowdfunding campaign.

Both devices have features the other doesn’t, so there are definitely reasons to choose either one.

But that OLED screen is a big joker for me.

And when you combine that with the better VRR, cooling, controls, software and ergonomics that work better for me, the OXP3 is quickly becoming the device I’d rather keep.

Bottom line
It’s still early. I’ve only had the OXP3 for about a day, so I’m not pretending this is some definitive long term review.

But I can already see where this is going, and unless something drastic changes with my experience over the next few days, the MSI Claw 8 AI+ EX is probably getting sold.

I’ll keep putting time into both and see if anything changes.
If you’re considering either one, feel free to ask questions. I’ll try to answer based on actually having both sitting here at the same time.

Question I dont wanna have to upgrade again in a year ...

So I have the 8ai right now. Planning to move to next gen but I don't wanna upgrade to the Ex and then have to compromise on games. I wanna be able to dock that shit on the wall crank it up and get performance and when I'm on the couch I can compromise 40-60 fps.

Now I hear onexplayer Apex and mini pro can do that shit. Is there any feedback on them from people that have both those and the ex?

Need Technical Assistance Best settings & XeSS configuration for Black Myth: Wukong on MSI Claw EX?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to get Black Myth: Wukong running as smoothly and cleanly as possible on the MSI Claw EX.

Since there aren't dedicated community optimization databases for the Claw like there are for the ROG Ally (e.g., ROGAllyLife), I’d love to hear from anyone who has thoroughly tested and tuned the game on this device.

Given that it's running on Intel hardware, I assume Intel XeSS (or TSR/FSR) is the way to go for upscaling and image quality balance.

For those playing on the Claw EX:

  • Resolution & Display: Are you running 1080p native with XeSS or downscaling to 900p/720p?
  • In-game Graphics Settings: Which individual settings (Shadows, Post-Processing, Global Illumination, Effects) provide the biggest performance gains without ruining visual clarity?
  • Upscaling & Frame Generation: Which XeSS preset (Quality / Balanced / Performance) strikes the sweet spot? Are you enabling Frame Gen or relying on raw framerate + VRR?
  • MSI Center M / TDP: What TDP wattage (PL1/PL2) and Power Plan profile (Performance vs. Balanced) are you using to prevent thermal throttling while maximizing the GPU allocation?

Any tested presets or config file tweaks that help achieve a solid, stable frame rate would be greatly appreciated!
