This lake renaming shit is so stupid. It's funny, but also really stupid.
50
u/SterBen3022 4d ago
In all honesty, that’s the point because it’s gonna piss people off who hate Trump so he can use their over reactions to say look at how crazy these people are they’re upset we renamed the lake and the crazy thing is no one seems to notice this and it just keeps working so he’s not gonna stop he’s been doing this his entire second term
24
u/JohnnyRelentless 4d ago
There doesn't have to be an over reaction. Any reaction that doesn't support it will do.

Yes! In fact, I've seen this happen before! Remember how the Gulf of Mexico was renamed the "Gulf of America" for similarly trite reasoning? That caused a lot of mockery and backlash for a while, but I've forgotten all about it until it happened all over again a few thousand miles north!

It’s funny until you realize that the president of the United States is simultaneously rage baiting and threatening to invade Canada.
1
u/SAMFCV1kingScientist 3d ago
It’s not really all that funny. It was stupid with the gulf, and continues to be stupid with the lake. We have countries making assassination videos with Legos of the Pedodent, and those started off as clever, but now they’ve become dumb too. The Diapered Diddler has devolved the entire global leadership into a friggin Mean Girls movie, turned tacticool into Gravy Seals, made the US the butt of many a joke…
And we just want to eat.
-22
u/MrZaptile933 4d ago
It’s entirely to piss off Canada. It’s a bargaining chip at this point, because Canada wants to try and bully us economically
15
u/One_Force_555 4d ago
Bully us economically? Putting retaliatory tarrifs on us because we put tariffs on them and started a trade war is them economically bullying us? And how does this act as a bargaining chip? How does this hold anything over Canada at all? They own half the lake and will still just call it lake Ontario on their side, and most people here will still call it lake Ontario or make fun of the name change like the golf of Mexico cause it's dumb. This is literally a nother burger. It doesn't have any actual affect on policy or laws or anything. It's a stupid vapid name change that is the product of a president who wants to have his word treated as gospel and can't see past petty vendettas and acts out childishly when things don't go his way.
-7
u/MrZaptile933 4d ago
They had their tariffs on American made goods for decades. We retaliated recently with tariffs, they cried victim because they couldn’t bully big brother anymore. Canada started this war a few decades ago, it’s just now they are losing and crying victim.
7
u/seaspirit331 4d ago
They did not, outside of a handful of specific gooda. The USMCA provided free trade between all three north american countries.
-4
u/MrZaptile933 4d ago
Let me reword your statement.
“No they didn’t, but well actually maybe they did, but only some things”
10
u/seaspirit331 4d ago
Do you know what "free trade" means? Because that's what we had with Canada until a certain someone decided to shit the entire economy along with his diaper.
Even among the handful of goods that technically had a tariff, there was zero tariffs actually enforced because they only applied under a specific set of circumstances with a specific set of goods. Canada bent over backwards to both accommodate our trade while still protecting their own industries.
But y'all are too low-IQ to understand facts or have good-faith negotiations, so you decided to get in a trade war over it. A trade war that we're now losing because Canada would rather deal with China than negotiate further with a proven liar.
4
u/MrZaptile933 4d ago
I love it. Free trade means free tariff free trade. Yet somehow Canada in your own words “had tariffs” does that sound fair and free?
It doesn’t to me. But I must be some idiot because I think Canada shouldn’t be tarrifing American goods if they want to use our military for their defense
6
u/Prism-96 4d ago
defence from who exactly?

It was tariffs that were agreed upon by both parties that only go into effect under specific conditions, we have them as well. This was not some underhanded shit they pulled after the agreement, we told them they could do this.

Canada wants all the benefits of statehood, while trying to function like a country. Its benefits are running out. Blame Canadian policy over the Americans.
3
u/GeeEyeSamurai 4d ago
This has gotta be ragebait lmao
2
u/MrZaptile933 4d ago
This comment yes, because Canadians are easy to mess with. The fact that American goods have been tariffed to hell by Canada for decades is real.
2
u/GeeEyeSamurai 4d ago
"Tariffed to hell by Canada" lmao. You mean prior to NAFTA or after cause from what I understand our economies are pretty intertwined, and we rely on each other. Canada relies a lot on our machinery, produce, and petroleum and we rely on their oil, lumber, and earth materials.
The only good that's been under contention prior to this trade war nonsense is probably lumber I think.

u/MrZaptile933 4d ago

10
u/TheRealPlumbus 4d ago
Canada is our Ally, and has been for multiple generations. We fought along side them in WW2 and they’re always the first to send help to fight our forests fires. Yet now we’re treating them like North Korea.
Wait that’s not true, we actually treat North Korea better because President “I get along with Kim Jong Un very well” relates more to dictators.
6
u/MrZaptile933 4d ago
Okay, and? Just because you’re allies doesn’t mean you can let them walk all over you.
It’s not fair for an ally under a free trade agreement to put a 400% tariff on any good. cough milk cough
7
u/TheRealPlumbus 4d ago
That’s the thing, they’re not walking over us. We started this fight by putting tariffs on them, and by trying to annex them. WE are the bullies in this situation, not the other way around.
I know you’re just repeating what you’ve been told. But try to think for yourself here.
There’s no reason for us to direct anger at our northern neighbors when we have billionaires and corporations robbing us blind.
7
u/MrZaptile933 4d ago
We didn’t start this fight, if you think we did you have no idea what the hell you’re talking about. Or in Canadian “talkin aboot”
→ More replies (1)2
u/TheRealPlumbus 4d ago
Wrong. We did start this fight.
Trump first slapped tariffs on Canada on February 1st 2025. Ostensibly because of the “trade deficit”
Canada responded in kind with retaliatory tariffs.
The trade deficit itself was a non issue. You’re always going to have a trade deficit with certain countries because it’s cheaper/easier to import their goods than to produce them in your own country. That’s how economics works.
The result of this trade war that WE started? We all pay higher prices. So who’s really losing this war. It’s you and me bud. And everyone else who’s not part of the ultra rich ruling class.
Don’t let them trick you into thinking the trade war is justified. Things shouldn’t be as expensive as they are right now.
5
u/beckerman67 4d ago
That tariff only goes into effect when a threshold is met, which the U.S has never even come close to reaching. You’re spewing your mouth all over this post over shit you clearly know nothing about.
4
u/MrZaptile933 4d ago
Shouldn’t have been in place at all, no conditions
1
u/BlazingSpaceGhost 4d ago
Its to protect their local market because of American farm subsidies. If America removed subsidies to the dairy industry then there wouldn't be a tariff.

Today the Governor of Wisconsin renamed Lake Michigan to Lake Wisconsin as a joke. And just like that, I was back on board for renaming stuff.
8
u/cheesesprite 4d ago
Why would he joke about such a serious matter
5
u/H-In-S-Productions 4d ago
Maybe because almost nothing involving this silly dispute with Canada is a serious matter?
After all, I am old enough to remember the old days of 2023-24, when "American nationalists" (many of whom may or may not be trolls from Russia, Africa, and Pakistan) were insisting that we should stop sending aid to Ukraine because "we need that money to support our own people" and "we're tired of foreign wars".
Now, we're supposed to get into arguments with Canada and Mexico, even though Trump himself signed the USMCA with those two countries in his last presidency!
PS: if your statement was sarcasm, I apologize if I don't get it.

Canada told him to take a hike after he tried to force them to remove the protections for the French language in a trade deal, along with a lot of actually important geopolitical demands that would have undermined their sovereignty.

American here, I don't care what that fat orange says it's still Lake Ontario, and just like it's still the Golf of Mexico.
Inflation is out of control, and we have moron rename things and building tacky-ass vanity projects that no American on either side want. People want to afford energy and food, but instead doughy rolly Polly is trying to seize more money for the pointless White House ballroom, which he had a portion of the historical House illegal torn down for. Then there the stupid arc he wants built and the rumors that he want the iconic Kennedy Center torn down because they won't put his shit name on it...
All of this is pointless, because once he's gone, those regions will just be renamed to their original names. Then the vast majority of the things he's slapped his garbage name all over, will either also go back to their original names or be re-renamed for much better people.

Calling it Lake America ruins the song Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and that disrespects the late great Gordon Lightfoot.
"Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the rooms of her ice-water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams
The islands and bays are for sportsmen
And farther below LAKE ONTARIO
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the gales of November remembered"

So if you import billions of dollars of Canadian oil why are you complaining of bullying? If you take oil out of the equation you actually have a positive trade balance. And if you are so self sufficient why are you importing 50 billion dollars of oil from Canada?
3
u/slickweasel333 4d ago
The US typically imports Canadian oil to be refined and is often exported for a profit.
Many US Gulf Coast and Midwest refineries were built decades ago specifically to process heavy, sour crude, the type Canada produces from its oil sands (bitumen).
US shale production, by contrast, is mostly light, sweet crude. Refineries can't just swap feedstocks without expensive retooling, so there's a genuine industrial need for heavy crude that domestic shale doesn't supply.
Also, Canadian heavy crude is often cheaper than US benchmark crude because Canada is a landlocked producer with limited export options outside the US, so we get it cheap.
It's also a stable, non-OPEC, allied supplier, which matters for energy security.
