Oh, so sad.
Is there any option to do a in-place upgrade. Basically, I just want to save myself some effort to install the OS and many packages...

the official position is to do a reinstall between major versions. there are some manual options but success depends heavily on individual systems. https://mxlinux.org/migration/

Many sources told me similar things... I am just lazy. But, a re-install would not be a major hurdle. I do have a reasonable backup scheme. Even the re-installation goes very wrong, I can go back to what I have in a matter of tens of minutes.
